League of Legends Improves Brain Function: Study Results with 68 Participants and EEG Analysis - Image 1
3 weeks ago vpesports

The myth that MOBA games melt brains is time to be consigned to the dustbin of history. Researchers from the Chinese University of Electronic Sciences and Technology have proven that League of Legends really improves brain function, improves memory and spatial attention. Moreover, the effect turned out to be much more powerful than from thoughtful tactical games.

How does League of Legends change neural connections?

The researchers gathered 68 adult volunteers. Tellingly, these were people with almost zero gaming backgrounds. A great focus group for a pure experiment. Over the course of 30 weeks, participants were tested comparing the effects of the League and the popular card strategy Legends of the Three Kingdoms on cognitive abilities. The results, to put it mildly, surprised the skeptics.

Cooperation against degradation

Analysis of brainwave activity has shown major changes for the better among MOBA players. The numbers don’t lie. It turned out that League of Legends provides a stronger and longer-lasting boost to executive functions. The secret lies in the specifics of the gameplay — the need to coordinate actions with the team and immediately react to the attacks of the enemy works as an excellent simulator for convolutions.

However, the authors of the study do not recommend going into the wilderness for the sake of developing intelligence. Only professional esports players should spend months in matchmaking without a break. The rest of us should keep a balance. Burnout has not been canceled, and for a change, you can always fly into a couple of matches in the fresh Marvel Rivals.
