Watch Dogs

Watch Dogs

Life does not always play by the rules, and reality rarely lives up to our expectations. This is especially painful when we place too much hope on a game. Watch Dogs is a prime example. Ubisoft has been feeding us promises of a new hacker hit in the spirit of GTA for so long that many have come to believe in a fairy tale. But fairy tales are good as long as you don’t have to pay for them. Users were expecting a revolution, but received a product that was far from their dream. Illusions crumble, marketing dust settles, and instead of beautiful words, only disappointment remains. It’s time to come down to earth — castles in the air are no longer in fashion.

At first glance, Watch Dogs gives the impression of a game assembled from other people’s ideas. Here you have a fragmented map with “viewpoints” in the spirit of Assassin’s Creed, and street adventures in the style of GTA – with thefts, chases and a living city. And if you look at the plot, Ubisoft is clearly aiming for a drama a la Max Payne, where the personal tragedy of the main character becomes a reason for war with the system.

But the ambitions of the developers rarely work out the way they would like. In theory, we have a noir with a hacker slant and a hero tormented by the pain of loss. In practice, however, he is a man who seems to be more happy with his hacking abilities than he is suffering for his dead niece. Aiden Pearce does not look like a man on the edge, he is more reminiscent of a poker player – with the same imperturbable face and minimal display of emotion.

Ubisoft tries to give depth to the hero through flashbacks and dramatic scenes, but in the end, Aiden’s character is blurred and uninteresting. He walks around with a stone face, rarely shows any emotion other than cold anger, and often acts according to logic known only to him. At one point, his sister asks him to stop, not to drag her and their son into danger. The answer is the standard: “Don’t worry, everything is under control.” And a couple of hours later, she is kidnapped – and, of course, the hero rushes to save her.

Digital Avenger: How We See the Watch Dogs Hero

Watch Dogs takes us to the world of the future, where technology plays a major role, and all human connections are through the prism of gadgets and digital networks. In this urban high-tech, a completely new type of hero appears – someone who lives by his own rules, does not need superpowers, but knows how to do the main thing – manage information.

Aiden Pearce is not a typical fighter for justice or a comic book superhero. He does not fly, does not launch a web, does not wear a cape and a mask. He lives in a gray zone of morality, where the main weapon is not a fist or a gun, but data. His strength lies in access to the ctOS system, the all-seeing digital brain of the city. This network knows everything about everyone, and Aiden knows how to use its capabilities with maximum efficiency.

watch dogs review

Watch Dogs is not just an action game, it is a reflection on the modern world, where privacy is increasingly becoming an illusion. The Chicago-inspired city is almost a dystopia, where every step is recorded, analyzed and can be used against you. But at the same time, it is a gaming sandbox, where one person who gains control over the data can break the system from the inside.

The game skillfully avoids beaten paths, offering them technogenic analogues. The threat in the form of a smartphone in Aiden’s hand is often more frightening than a gun – it can change someone’s life in a matter of seconds, without spilling a drop of blood. In the hero’s arsenal:

  • hacking CCTV cameras and bank accounts,
  • substitution of personal data,
  • disabling infrastructure – from traffic lights to power grids,
  • intercepting telephone conversations,
  • controlling drones and other autonomous systems.

Blackmail, surveillance, information attacks – all this is becoming a weapon of the new era.

And even if Aiden himself is not the most charismatic hero at first glance, his strength, style and influence cannot be underestimated. In a world where knowledge is power, he becomes the embodiment of an invisible but all-powerful avenger. And perhaps this is the main magic of Watch Dogs.

Unique Gameplay Watch Dogs: Technology Instead of Power

Watch Dogs feels like something special from the very first minutes — and it’s not just about the setting. The unique atmosphere of the city of the future directly affects the gameplay: even when the game pays tribute to the classics of the genre, it retains its own face. Everything here is permeated with details. Want to steal a car? The main character, Aiden Pearce, will first hack the alarm system via a smartphone. Need to access another “sync tower”? You’ll have to wander around the rooftops, moving from one surveillance camera to another, literally building a route on the fly.

The key feature of Watch Dogs is, of course, Pearce’s hacking abilities. Almost everything in the city is connected to a single ctOS system, and Aiden can easily access it. A couple of swipes on the phone — and you are already in control of the world around you. At your disposal:

Digital Avenger How We See the Watch Dogs Hero

  • surveillance cameras, which can be used to monitor the area and find vulnerabilities;
  • street lights and electrical panels, which can be blown up or turned off;
  • passers-by’s smartphones – for wiretapping, distraction or even data theft;
  • barriers, bridges and traffic lights – useful for escaping pursuit;
  • ATMs and terminals, through which you can “warm” your pocket.

And when you need to get to classified data, a mini-puzzle awaits you. This is not a hardcore hack with matrices and codes, but rather an arcade game of laying an “information tunnel” between two points. With each new level, the task becomes more difficult, but is unlikely to take you more than a couple of minutes. Many of the hacks are not created for show, but to save your own skin. Are they chasing? We cause an accident by switching traffic lights, raise bridges, block gates. However, enemies quickly adapt: where one is confused, another is already driving out to intercept you. And if at the beginning of the chase please with drive, then later they begin to bother. The most reliable way to deal with this is to simply “clean up” all ill-wishers.

Unfortunately, all these tricks are in sharp contrast to how driving in the game feels. The car physics here are like plasticine: acceleration, skidding and collisions are done in a purely arcade style, without any hint of realism. Car damage also leaves much to be desired – they are as far from the level of GTAV as the moon. Therefore, it is often easier to move on foot, especially when the shooting starts.

The shootouts, by the way, are quite lively, but without any special revelations. The standard set: active shooting, spectacular slow motion and a stealth approach for those who prefer to act unnoticed. All this works as it should, but the enemies, controlled by a rather dull AI, prevent you from feeling the intensity. In the end, Watch Dogs is a nice hybrid of action and techno-fiction, which surprises more with its concept than its execution.

Somewhere Between GTA and Assassin’s Creed: Ubisoft’s Attempt to Catch Up with Legends

If you like to dig into mechanics and possibilities to the last pixel, Watch Dogs will give you a chance to roam. The game is really filled with activities: there is something to do outside the main campaign. If you want, chase criminals, solve street scams or go to the local casino, and if your soul asks for action, no one forbids you to arrange a massacre with aliens. It would seem that this is the dream of any gamer. But after a couple of hours, all this diversity begins to be perceived as the same thing under a different sauce. There is quantity, but the quality is a disaster. Ubisoft again steps on the same rake as with Assassin’s Creed: there is additional content, but it feels like deja vu.

Initially, Watch Dogs is really impressive. The city is alive, the streets are filled with events, and it seems as if you are inside a Hollywood action movie. The first crazy chase is captivating, you forget about the plot and start simply driving around the city in search of adrenaline. But it’s worth playing a little, and the magic begins to dissipate: behind the facade of dynamics hides a painfully familiar algorithm. Everything is too predictable. Like in AC, where each “new” task is a slightly repainted copy of the previous one. If you like chasing 100% progress, doing the same thing endlessly — you’re welcome.

Is Watch Dogs worth playing

Another popular feature is access to the personal information of passers-by. The first couple of hours are truly mesmerizing: biographies, incomes, passions, even the dark past of random citizens flash on the screen. But then you begin to notice that behind the seeming depth there is emptiness. All these NPCs are just dummies with random labels. They don’t live in this city, they just exist so that you think a couple of times: “Oh, cool.”

And now — a bit of absurdity. Try, for example, to steal a car. The owner immediately grabs the phone – and yes, he calls the police. You knock down the “snitch”, but now a passerby in a panic calls the cops. You shoot her too. Around the corner there is an observer with a different skin color – and another call. Welcome to the club of involuntary maniacs. Because of one theft, you suddenly arrange a small meat grinder, and the system looks at it with a stone face – everything is according to the script.

Against this background, comparisons with GTA V are inevitable – and, alas, not in favor of Watch Dogs. Rockstar created a living, rich world where every episode is memorable. Ubisoft did everything according to the template, trying to be “like them”, but did not live up to it. As a result, Watch Dogs joins the list of decent, but secondary GTA clones. Sleeping Dogs had the charisma of hand-to-hand combat, Saints Row – complete recklessness. Watch Dogs will go down in history as “GTA about a hacker” – ambitious, but too cloying and too predictable.

Is Watch Dogs worth playing?

At first glance, it may seem that we are too strict with Watch Dogs. But in fact, it was not us who raised the bar — the developers themselves did. The game turned out to be good, even excellent in places, but it clearly did not reach the level that Ubisoft actively promised in trailers and promos. They wanted to shoot for the stars, but in the end they landed somewhere at the foot of the mountain.

Unique Gameplay Watch Dogs

What we liked:

  • an original setting that really stands out from other games;
  • an interesting implementation of hacker mechanics — they are organically integrated into the gameplay;
  • individual side quests can drag you in no worse than the main storyline.

What let us down:

  • the release happened after GTA V, and in comparison with it, Watch Dogs seems noticeably paler in almost all aspects.
