Valheim Review – Free Download on Steam
We will tell you about a game called Valheim. We have been undecided about writing an article for a long time and ignored this game, but we decided to make amends. Similar to some Skyrim on minimum settings – either it’s the pixel graphics in places, or the third-person view. But many gamers read positive reviews on our site.

Valheim is an interesting third-person action game set in the best fantasy universe. The world is completely open, with survival elements that invite players to embark on wonderful adventures alone or with friends. The gameplay is deeply immersive, offering a wide range of activities: from exploring ancient tombs filled with treasures to collecting the necessary resources. Players can craft weapons, build shelters, and face dangerous enemies, making each session special and improved. Beautiful landscapes and good weather further enhance the experience, inviting players to discover the secrets of the kingdom. Regardless of whether you prefer solo exploration or co-op play, Valheim promises many hours of adventure and fun. The armor and weapons that players upgrade diligently become increasingly powerful weapons of war, and the variety of enemies and monsters they encounter keeps the experience fresh and exciting. Players encounter dangerous and vicious bosses that attack unexpectedly with their skills and tactics. The successful feature of the project is undoubtedly its good setting, which draws players into a world steeped in the harsh aesthetics of early medieval Scandinavian life.

Valheim review
At the very beginning, you are greeted by a simple character editor. There is no super-customization: choose a gender, hairstyle (if you play as a man, then the shape of the beard) – and go ahead, conquer the expanses of Valheim. You appear in a huge world based on Scandinavian mythology and Viking culture. You are literally dragged in the paws of some overgrown woodpecker, throwing you near mysterious boulders, and then – do what you want.
In this gameplay is similar to Minecraft and The Forest. At the beginning, you will meet a bird that will lead you through all the stages of the game. Yes, a talking raven appears from time to time, giving some hints, but it does not appear that often. Moreover, it mainly hints about individual mechanics of the game. Our site highly recommends reading the hints. You will also find some hints on rune stones, which are often found in the starting biarmy. Looking around, you will notice above you the branches of a giant tree called Yggdrasil. This tree intertwines and connects 10 worlds, one of which is Valheim.
The map in the game is huge, so much so that the player feels on it like a flea on a mammoth’s skin. It is also worth considering that it is different for all players. The thing is that it is procedurally generated. Simply put, starting a new survival, you can create a completely different map. The map itself is divided into an ocean and many islands – both small and larger.
The player’s main task is to first summon and then fight off several bosses. It would seem easy, but it can take you more than 100 hours. You can’t just go and kick the final boss – you need to defeat them all in turn.
Survival basics: building, resources, and dangers in the game
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but go back to the very beginning. The character ends up literally empty-handed; you will have to extract the most basic resources, such as wood and stone. There are no research branches — learning new blueprints is literally done by touch. You pick up new resources — and new recipes are revealed to you. Therefore, it is worth grabbing everything that you have not touched with your little hands before.
Everything is fine with construction in the game. You create a hammer and start building with it. You put a workbench — and an area appears around it, which is marked with a dotted line. In this area, you can build whatever you want. Moreover, there are no ready-made buildings as such — only all kinds of machines and furnaces. You will have to design the building yourself. Various pillars, walls, roof elements and ceilings are used to erect the building. There are no special restrictions either — you can build a small wooden barn, or you can build a whole complex of mansions. The only thing worth remembering is the strength of the structures. If you skimp on supports, your little tower can collapse like a house of cards.
The game features day and night cycles, and the weather can change. It can be sunny, foggy, rainy, or even a hurricane. During a storm or torrential rain, your fire outside will go out, so it is better to allocate a separate place for the fire under the roof. And here it is worth mentioning one interesting detail – smoke. If you simply set up a fire in the middle of the house, all the smoke will be inside the building. This threatens that your character will start receiving damage and may simply suffocate. Therefore, you will have to make a chimney. It seems like a small thing, but the mechanics are interesting.
If you think that the base is only needed for comfort, then you are mistaken. I have already mentioned all sorts of machines. In addition to them, on the territory of the base you can organize a pier for your ships or an entire farm. On the farm, you can grow vegetables, plants and breed wild boars. True, from time to time wild animals and monsters have an exacerbation, and they organize entire raids on the player. During such raids, they are capable of giving the character a beating and destroying his buildings, so it is worth worrying about safety. Despite the fact that this is a survival game, here you will not die of hunger or thirst. In the game, food acts as a buff and increases the overall amount of health. Without food, the health indicator will be very low, and there is a high chance that you will lose the battle even to a mutant mosquito.
Valheim biomes, grind and monster fights: a complete guide
Valheim, in addition to sun-drenched meadows, is also full of less pleasant landscapes. In such places, the atmosphere is clearly not festive. This is due to the fact that the map is divided into different biomes. At the moment, there are 6 of them. These include:
- meadows,
- black forest,
- swamp,
- plains,
- mountains and the ocean.
This list is not final, as over time, the developers will add new zones. All biomes are seriously different from each other both visually… And in terms of types of monsters and useful resources.
Biome walkthroughs to the bosses’ path
To defeat all the bosses, you will have to visit each of the Biomes, and you will not be able to just quickly run through them all.
Firstly, not all islands have all the biomes, so in search of the missing ones, you will have to travel by water. Secondly, the monsters you meet will most likely kill the character with one slap. And if you decide to climb a mountain, you can die there even without monsters, and the reason for this is the cold. Without warm clothes, you will quickly freeze. Swimming between the islands is also not so safe. The ocean is not just a lot of water, there are also dangerous monsters. It’s one thing if the other shore is very close – you can build a simple raft and somehow swim to the opposite shore at the speed of a turtle. It’s a completely different matter if you need to swim far – for this you will first have to study and then build a faster ship. And, of course, no one is immune from troubles along the way.
Grind
What about grinding? In general, the whole game is built on it. As we already mentioned, you will need resources to create items and build. There are several types of wood, rocks, metals, plants, precious stones, trophies, and so on. In general, there are a lot of all kinds of resources. As soon as you see something new, you definitely need to pick it up, kill it, mine it with a pickaxe or cut it down. You’ll have to mine a lot. For example, mining wood was more or less simple for me: if you’re not going to build a whole city, then a couple dozen trees will be enough to build a small base. But where I got fed up was mining ore. For example, copper is used up very quickly. If you play solo, then crafting all sorts of equipment will take you a lot of time. If you play with a friend, things will go much faster.
Fauna and monsters
Now a few words about the local fauna. There are a ton of all sorts of creatures here. This category includes animals, fish, birds, monsters and bosses. In the initial biome, deer are jumping everywhere, crows and seagulls are flying, fish are splashing in the water – in general, it’s a blessing. All of them are safe for the player. Of the dangerous creatures, there are only wild boars and local liches – and they are all weak, and it won’t be difficult to kick them in the ass. But, as they say, the further into the forest, the fatter the wolves. The monsters are becoming more and more dangerous.
Literally in the neighboring Black Forest, you can come across overgrown Smurfs. This is none other than a troll. At first glance, it is clear what they cover their shameful places with. Either they make themselves a skirt from plants, or it is just overgrown green wool. In a couple of hits, a troll is capable of not only knocking the soul out of a player, but also knocking down half a forest. And these are not the most dangerous monsters. During numerous travels, you will come across skeletons, huge leeches, dragons, golems and other evil spirits. Some of them live on the surface, and some – in special dungeons and crypts. To deal with this whole gang, you will need good armor and weapons. Fortunately, there are many types of them.
Arsenal
Your arsenal may include swords, bombs, bows, clubs, daggers, spears and halberds. Look! However, to make something more or less powerful, you will have to work hard – you will need rare resources. Since you can’t craft a cool club from good and sticks. By the way, you can attack enemies not just head-on, but from stealth mode. Enemy attacks can be parried, temporarily stunning the enemy. When shooting from a bow, you can use different types of arrows, thanks to which you can poison, freeze or set fire to your enemy.
Character progression in Valheim takes more of the interest from the mechanics seen in Skyrim. The system is designed to be fairly intuitive: to improve a certain ability, you simply need to perform that action more often. For example, if you want to increase the damage of your spear attack, you can repeatedly hit a rock with it. Likewise, to increase your running speed, simply walk around your cabin a few times.
Food plays a major role in increasing both stamina and health, but it’s important to note that your character won’t die from starvation alone. While you can survive without food, your performance will suffer, and you may not fully recover from injuries or fatigue. To maximize the benefits of food — like speeding up health regeneration or healing — you need to vary your diet. Eating the same food repeatedly won’t give the same effects; variety is key to maintaining optimal health and stamina balance in the game.
Valheim graphics
Like probably many other players, the graphics seemed strange. It feels like the game was originally made for a smartphone. But after playing Valheim for a couple of hours, you don’t pay much attention to the graphics anymore. The textures are weak here, but the lighting is quite good, the effects are also good. We make it clear that there is a special style here, and it is often quite appropriate. Sunsets and sunrises look very good. The water is also well made, and during a storm, huge waves can even cause a little fear and trepidation in a beginner. Physics is also present in the game. In the list of the most common deaths among beginners, one of the first positions will be death from a log. Moreover, damage can be received not only from a falling tree, but also from a trunk that rolls down a hill. If you are very unlucky, one fallen birch can break the entire base. In short, fans of The Forest will appreciate this mechanic. In fact, the entire world in the game is destructible, terraforming is also present. If you want, you can dig yourself a hole and live in it peacefully.
Valheim system requirements
To really get into the world of Valheim, you’ll need at least 8GB of RAM and at least 1GB of free disk space. While the game can run on a GeForce GTX 950, the developers still recommend upgrading to a Radeon RX 580 for an important and better visual experience and smoother gameplay. As for the processor, the A6-5400K will do the trick, but if you want to up the settings and enjoy a smoother gameplay, it’s wise to go for something stronger, like the Core i5-655K or higher.
