Tricky Towers

Tricky Towers

It’s unlikely that there’s a person who has never heard of Tetris, a cult game created by Soviet developer Alexey Pajitnov back in the 1980s. Several decades have passed since then, but interest in this simple but addictive puzzle game hasn’t abated. Over the years, the game has seen many re-releases and adaptations, appearing on a variety of platforms, from old consoles to modern consoles.

Tricky Towers, which we’ll be talking about, borrows the familiar mechanics from Tetris, but rethinks it in a very unusual way. Instead of collecting and erasing rows, here you have to build a tower — tall, stable, and, preferably, not falling. Every awkward movement, skew, or poorly placed piece can destroy everything you’ve worked so hard to build in a matter of seconds. The result is a collapsed structure, the inscription Game Over, and a well-deserved feeling of defeat.

The game offers fun and dynamic competitions both on a local network and online — up to four players. Competitions are held in the format of matches, each of which includes three random modes and a set of maps that create different combinations and unexpected turns of events.

In total, there are several types of matches: small, medium, large and super cups. They differ in duration and number of rounds — the larger the match, the more modes you can try. In each round, participants compete for medals: first place brings three, second — two, third — one, and the fourth gets nothing. If several players are in the same position at once, the rewards are distributed equally. For example, if the two leaders have an equal score, both receive three medals, and the next one — only one. If three or all players have scored the same number of points, they are given the same number of rewards.

One of the main modes is the race. Here, players compete in the speed of building a tower of falling figures: whoever reaches the finish line first is the winner. The tower is subject to the laws of physics, so you won’t get far without a solid foundation. An unevenly placed part can collapse the entire structure or greatly complicate further construction – you will have to either remove the obstacle or build a bypass.

In the survival mode, accuracy comes first, not speed. Each player has only three lives, and each of them is lost if at least one figure falls. Lose three times – and you are out. The situation is complicated by random “dirty tricks” and gusts of wind, which can knock down figures or upset the balance of the entire structure. The winner is the one who lasts the longest or is the first to successfully use the entire available set of blocks.

Puzzle is another interesting mode, where it is important not to cross the finish line, but to place as many figures as possible in a limited space. Each element requires precision: fallen parts are not only lost, but also raise the base of the tower, reducing the useful area for future buildings. And everything that flies out of the borders will burn irretrievably. The winner is the one who can lay the maximum number of figures and keep the tower stable.

Game mechanics: how to hinder your opponents and help yourself

This game is addictive not only because of its various modes, but also because of the ability to both screw over your opponents and help yourself with fun and creative mechanics.

The meanness is limited in number, of course, but certainly not in effect. All of them are aimed exclusively at other players and can be combined with each other, creating real chaos on the field:

Game mechanics

  • You can give your opponent a “slow” ball — the figure with it descends and moves slower than usual;
  • Launch “grass” that blocks the view of the top of the tower and makes it difficult to see where to place the figures (but does not affect fresh elements);
  • Create a fog that completely hides the top of the tower and a couple more cells up and down — playing in such conditions becomes a real challenge;
  • Turn your opponent’s figure into a giant — it becomes twice as big, which means it is much more difficult to fit into the structure;
  • Chain several of your opponent’s next figures so that he cannot rotate them;
  • Speed up the fall of your opponent’s figure so that he will not have time to think;
  • Replace his current figure with a random one: a vane, a piano, or, say, a turret with a window may fall out;
  • Send a “bubble” that steals one figure from the top of your opponent’s tower;
  • unleash evil fairies that pull a random piece from the depths of the tower and interfere with neighboring ones;
  • make the current piece rotate counterclockwise every few seconds – just a pain in the ass!
  • cast an ice curse that makes the pieces slippery and impossible to place anything on them stably.

But the list of “bonuses” for yourself is a little more modest, but they are really powerful:

  • ivy wraps around the figure and when installed, it hooks several more standing nearby – everything holds tight;
  • concrete turns the figure into an immovable stone: it cannot be moved, stolen, or demolished – an ideal foundation;
  • lightning destroys the last installed figure, even if it is still in flight;
  • you can install a small island – an additional platform to the left or right of the tower, on which it is convenient to place or lean other figures.

Control is implemented both through the keyboard with a mouse and through the gamepad, but it still feels more comfortable to play with the gamepad.

Is Tricky Towers Worth Playing in 2025? The Pros and Cons of the Cartoon Super Bowl Arcade

The game is simple, a little naive and even childishly cute – but that’s its charm. Each character has the ability to customize the appearance of the figures, though for a separate fee. Customization is purely cosmetic, but fans of collecting will definitely like it.

The music is cheerful, and the voice acting of the characters is some kind of surreal set of shouts and interjections. At first it’s funny, then it’s annoying. After half an hour of playing, the soundtrack and these sounds begin to drive you crazy, although it’s worth giving credit – all the audio is completely original.

Pros:

  • Three different modes, each of which is exciting and emotional in its own way – sometimes it’s joyful, sometimes you want to throw the gamepad at the wall.
  • The pleasure of winning the Super Bowl is indescribable – you feel like a demigod.

Cons:

  • Only three maps – quickly become boring.
  • Microtransactions at every step – they are cosmetic, but an eyesore.
  • Only three modes – yes, we’ve already said it, but I would like more.

This is a great game for a fun company, which can easily turn into a test of the strength of your friendship. A test of reaction, endurance and the ability to maintain self-control when someone has set you up for the third time. Sometimes it’s funny, sometimes it’s infuriating – especially in a protracted super bowl, where intrigue, meanness and sudden luck go hand in hand. In general, an ideal way to find out which of your friends is the quietest saboteur.
