Today they form alliances, and tomorrow they betray each other, igniting new conflicts. Against the backdrop of this chaos, the Yellow Turban Rebellion breaks out, which they cannot suppress. Ordinary peasants suffer from hunger and devastation, and those who are stronger play their own game. As befits the Total War series, the historical setting is recreated with attention to detail. The world immediately greets you with enemies, treacherous allies and ambitious rivals thirsty for power. The political arena is seething with intrigue, and the armies will have to write their chapter in the era of the Three Kingdoms.
The developers were inspired by the famous novel by Luo Guanzhong “Romance of the Three Kingdoms”. Although the book is based on real events, its narrative is imbued with the spirit of military romance. Creative Assembly decided to emphasize this contrast by offering two game modes: classic and romanticized. In the first case, we have the usual Total War with an emphasis on realism. But the second option offers to feel like you are in an epic, where the heroes are real legends. They are not just commanders, but mighty warriors, capable of single-handedly cutting through enemy ranks, putting them to flight with one blow.

The map turned out to be, perhaps, the most large-scale in the series: the number of principalities and provinces is impressive. Choosing a faction is not an easy task, because each ruler has his own starting conditions and strategic features. Despite the fact that all participants in the civil war strive for one thing – power over China, they go to it in different ways. Creative Assembly once again proved that they can work out asymmetrical sides of the conflict, as was the case, for example, in Total War: Warhammer.
Total War: Three Kingdoms old mechanism with new details
Total War gameplay still feels like a complex, but perfectly tuned mechanism. In turn-based mode, we manage the state, solving political and economic issues, and in tactical mode, we fight in real time, crushing enemies on the battlefield. Both aspects are deep and self-sufficient, but no one forbids you to focus only on the global map, entrusting the outcome of battles to artificial intelligence. Or, conversely, immerse yourself in large-scale historical battles if you don’t feel like managing an empire. The series has always been famous for its variety of opportunities, but in Three Kingdoms there are even more of them – even if naval battles had to be crossed out. There is plenty to do as a ruler: build cities, carry out reforms, arrange dynastic marriages, weave intrigues … There is work for everyone who is ready to take on the management of the ancient Chinese state.
Diplomacy in the game has reached a new level. Now negotiations are not just a choice between a couple of template offers, but a detailed setting of conditions. You can not only negotiate an alliance, but also ask for specific resources, demand territory, or even speed up a wedding (sometimes a profitable marriage is urgently needed, even if the bride is no longer in her first youth). Chinese politics of that era are full of subtleties, and diplomacy is essential here – unlike many other global strategies, where this aspect is often secondary. In addition, you will now have to keep a closer eye on the members of your faction. Generals and governors behave like characters from an RPG: they build friendships, quarrel, argue, and their attitude towards each other directly affects the morale of the army. Two comrades in arms who have gone through dozens of battles can become allies for life or harbor a grudge against each other. This adds unexpected twists to the game: even your own son can betray you and go over to the enemy’s side if he decides that he has been underestimated.
The new reform system turned out to be one of the most successful mechanics. Once a year, with the arrival of spring, you can implement one innovation: exempt part of the population from taxes, support agriculture or, for example, attract foreign traders. The process itself is presented in an original way – the reform tree is designed as a sakura, where each new decision blossoms as a separate bud. The visual presentation is really catchy: you wait for the end of winter to finally carry out the long-awaited transformation.
The role-playing development system has also expanded significantly. Now characters can:
- Increase levels and gain new skills
- Change weapons and armor
- Get personal companions
- Move to better horses
- Improve personal characteristics that affect the faction
Although the heroes of Three Kingdoms do not have as many skills as the characters from Total War: Warhammer, each improvement plays its role in the overall development of the state. And strategic management of the country opens up new opportunities – for example, it allows you to develop espionage and conduct secret operations. Total War: Three Kingdoms bets on depth and atmosphere, forcing you to consider not only the strength of the troops, but also politics, the characters of the generals and even the change of seasons. This is a game in which battles are just part of a larger mechanism, and the ability to rule is more important than the power of armies.
Battles, Economy, and Troop Fatigue: What to Look Out for in Three Kingdoms
The tactical battle mode has received several interesting innovations, but not all of them work as we would like. The advertised system of duels between generals looks spectacular, but quickly becomes superficial entertainment. When two commanders meet in battle, ordinary soldiers fall silent and just watch the spectacle from the sidelines, and all you have to do is press a couple of buttons with special abilities – if, of course, you managed to unlock them in the skill tree. Otherwise, all you can do is give the order to flee, because the general, carried away by the battle, does not react to anything else. But it is worth admitting that the animation of the battles is impressive – in places it seems like you are watching scenes from Zhang Yimou’s best films.
The ambush mechanics have noticeably become more lively: now a squad that has fallen into a trap does not rush about in panic, but retreats in an organized manner to the nearest evacuation point, leaving the enemy with nothing. But the assaults on fortresses are still far from ideal. As soon as the soldiers overcome the walls, the artificial intelligence begins to fail – the fighters get lost and do not understand where to go next. This is clearly a flaw, which, hopefully, will be fixed with patches. However, the combat itself remains at its best: tactical control of squads and competent maneuvers allow you to win even over a numerically superior enemy.
But perhaps the most noticeable improvement is the graphics. The visual component of tactical battles has become even more impressive. The soldiers look detailed, as in the latest parts of Total War, but the landscapes deserve special attention. Sunset over the mountains, fog over the winter forest, clouds cutting through the battlefield – all this creates an atmosphere that is easy to immerse yourself in. The global map, designed in the style of Chinese watercolors, is also pleasing to the eye: a combination of minimalism and elaborate details makes it truly beautiful. True, it happens that it is easy to get lost in this artistic splendor of the interface.
Based on the combination of visual solutions, Total War: Three Kingdoms can safely be called one of the most beautiful strategies to date. However, with the sound, everything is not so smooth. The musical accompaniment – traditional Chinese motifs played on live instruments – sounds great. The sounds of battles are also top-notch: it is worth lowering the camera into the thick of the battle to feel all the chaos of the battle. But the dialogues… The characters literally never stop talking, either on the global map or in battle. And their lines are not always appropriate. Imagine: a general, standing in front of a burning city, suddenly exclaims: “How beautiful spring is!” – and all the drama of the moment immediately evaporates. In addition to this, the Russian voice acting is not the best, where the actors often overact, delivering lines with such pathos that it’s time to go back to the army to steel your nerves.
A strategy game where warriors dream of a vacation
The pace of the game has noticeably slowed down compared to the previous parts of the series. The territories are huge, there are plenty of enemies, but your soldiers are constantly complaining: they want rest, then meditation. At such moments, you involuntarily recall the ancient Roman legionnaires from Rome: Total War – these guys briskly marched across Africa, released war dogs on the locals, and the empire grew almost every turn. The developers have repeatedly talked about the importance of the mechanics of troop fatigue, but sometimes you want to see less of it at least in games, because in real life there is enough of it.
And now you also need to carefully monitor food supplies, otherwise the growth of cities turns into a real nightmare – food is always running out. As a result, it seems that governing a state has become more difficult not due to a smart economy, but because of a constant feeling of a lack of resources.
Overall, Three Kingdoms is fun, but with some nuances. What should you pay attention to before playing?
- Great visual style: from detailed soldier models to picturesque landscapes.
- Exciting battles where tactical skill is more important than numerical superiority.
- Tedious mechanics of troop fatigue and food shortage, which can be annoying.
- Weak voice acting of characters and overly intrusive lines.
