“From the start, our goal was to give fans the complete classic Tomb Raider experience, spanning all six original games from Core Design. However, the incredibly positive response to Tomb Raider I-III Remastered has made us even more determined to follow that vision,” said Jordan Reese. According to Embracer, the remasters of the first three games have exceeded all expectations, which explains the accelerated development of the second set… as well as the wave of enthusiasm surrounding the Soul Reaver 1+2 remaster, which was released in December.

Classic Tomb Raider fans are extremely defensive about Lara Croft and the brand in general. Many of them feel that returning to Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness is a waste of time for everyone involved. “The pressure we feel is on ourselves as we try to bring these games back into the marketplace for both veteran and new players,” Reese confirmed. If you’re familiar with Aspyr’s remasters, you’ll know they’re taking a traditional approach. Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles is the latest example, and it looks like the company is committed to continuing in that vein: “Our main focus with these games is to maintain the original look and feel while still offering players something new with updated graphics and functionality.”

Aspyr admits it’s “a collective effort throughout the entire process,” suggesting that communication has been continuous from start to finish, including the Tomb Raider I-III remasters.
“We’re working closely with Crystal Dynamics to ensure we stay true to the original vision for the game, while adding improvements where possible. It’s important to maintain the visual style and tone of these classic games, so working with the IP owner helps us achieve that goal.” Also involved in the collaboration is Embracer Group, the current rights holder, while Crystal Dynamics is actively developing Lara Croft’s new adventure.

However, given how Aspyr has successfully improved on less successful releases with cult audiences in the past (and that includes other brands), we’re optimistic that Chronicles and The Angel of Darkness will be positively re-evaluated thanks to this second trip down memory lane with Ms. Croft.
