While other attempts to adapt local fantasy into video games failed, this project not only survived, but also took a cult place in the RPG genre. It is quite possible that the literary basis – Andrzej Sapkowski’s books about Geralt, a monster hunter, which have long been loved by readers in Poland, Russia and other countries where video games are not an empty phrase – contributed to its success.
CD Projekt RED took the cynical, dark style of the original source and transferred it to a living, original world reminiscent of Eastern Europe, only several centuries before our time. But this was not the only trump card of the game. The developers created a non-linear plot, where each action of the player really influenced further events – not at one or two key points, but constantly.
Geralt invariably found himself in situations where it was his choice that determined the further course of events. And the consequences were not always obvious. For example, having shown mercy and let the elven rebels go, you could soon see what your kindness led to – the arrows they fired stuck in the backs of innocent people. The player felt like he was on the edge of an abyss all the time, trying to guess the logic of the game, but the developers always found a way to surprise him. And there was a special excitement in this. Four years passed – and history repeated itself. Geralt takes up his sword again, again forced to make a difficult choice. And again, pictures appear before his eyes in which the consequences of his decisions turn into a nightmare.

The Mahakam Crisis of 229: The Beginning of a New Era of The Witcher
The Witcher 2 immediately makes it clear that this is not just a sequel, but something more. One of the first scenes is an homage to the introduction of the first part: a disturbing dream, a stormy sky, calling voices – “Geralt! Geralt!” – and a sudden awakening. However, this time the reality beyond the dream is completely different. A lot of time has passed since the end of the first game. Geralt is now the personal bodyguard of the King of Temeria Foltest, and Triss Merigold has become his advisor. However, the monarch is not up to a calm reign now: part of the nobility has rebelled and is holding his illegitimate children hostage. The Witcher 2 does not give time to warm up – the game literally throws you into the heat of events. The first minutes are memories of the fateful assault, the camp is full of tension, the soldiers are waiting only for the royal order. This scene alone makes it clear: this is not just a sequel, but a new level of storytelling. More dynamic, more professional, more lively.
In the second part, the developers have radically changed their approach to staging scenes. There is more aggressive editing, expressive angles, and real direction. The camera works as if there is an invisible but talented operator behind it. Where other studios would have gotten by with boring static dialogues with NPCs, CD Projekt RED turns the scene into a full-fledged cinematic action.
From the very first minutes, the player finds himself in the center of events:
- helps Foltest aim his ballista;
- participates in the storming of the fortress;
- sees how the dragon breaks into battle;
- becomes a witness to an unexpected tragedy – the murder of the king;
- and then… and the main suspect in this crime.
The creators seem to deliberately provoke comparisons with Dragon Age 2. Both games start with the protagonist’s story during interrogation. Only if in the BioWare game we have Cassandra sitting in front of us, then in The Witcher 2 it is the tough head of the secret police, Vernon Roche. But unlike Dragon Age 2, where the retrospective drags on for a long time, here it lasts only an hour, after which the harsh reality begins – the search for the real killer and the investigation of a series of royal murders. And here The Witcher 2 shows its main advantage. Instead of a disjointed story of a refugee, it offers a dense, logical and integral plot. Instead of endless corridors – rich, multi-level quests in which each choice of the player changes the world.
The player is the real engine of the plot in The Witcher 2
The main difference between The Witcher 2 and many RPGs is the real impact of decisions on the world. Here you will have to decide the fates of princes, bandits and even dragons. For example, in one of the scenes you can give a prisoner to be dealt with by an angry crowd or try to save him. And one of the most important plot choices will determine in which of two completely different locations the second chapter will take place.
The game offers:
- sixteen different endings;
- full-fledged plot lines depending on your decisions;
- characters who remember your actions;
- events that can develop completely differently upon repeated playthrough.
The culmination in the form of multiple ending options only confirms: this is a game where your decisions matter.
CD Projekt does not betray the spirit of “The Witcher” and generously seasons the game with a crude, but accurate humor. Already at the beginning of the first chapter, the commandant of Flotsam calmly greets Geralt, not paying attention to the fresh corpses of the hanged behind his back. And in the dungeon, you can overhear a funny dialogue, clearly referring to the Prison Break series: “And, thirdly, the tattoo should have been on the back, and not on …” Well, you get the idea. NPCs desperately swear, especially enjoying the word “fuck”. And during a fight in a tavern, someone from the crowd will certainly yell: “Bite Jovo’s balls!” Sometimes it resembles childish fun, but in good moments it really is funny. For example, when a dwarf exclaims after a fight in a mine: “Why do we dwarves always dig up some shit?!”
Despite the masterful work with the plot, CD Projekt still couldn’t resist the “gun on the wall” trick. The storyline with Geralt’s lost memory and his search for Yennefer is carefully developed throughout the game… only to be left hanging. All the promises of answers are just a teaser for the third part. But even despite this move, “The Witcher 2” remains a model of how to make role-playing games: with a strong plot, real choices, and a truly living world.
How did CD Projekt change combat in The Witcher 2?
Like BioWare with Dragon Age 2, the developers of The Witcher 2 decided to radically revise the combat system. Remember how in the first part you had to click the mouse in time to form a combo, switch combat styles and actively use witcher magic? In the sequel, only signs remained from this system – everything else was remade from scratch.
Now there are no combat styles – instead, there are two basic attacks (powerful and fast) and the ability to block attacks. Forget about the monotonous click-fest – the battles in The Witcher 2 are tough, demanding and without the right to make a mistake. CD Projekt went against the trends and did not simplify the mechanics, but on the contrary, complicated them. Even at the very beginning of the game, a skirmish with a couple of drowners is not a walk in the park, but a real challenge. Enemies do not act alone, they cover each other, punish for carelessness and like to drive into a corner. To survive, you will have to constantly maneuver, use signs, traps and grenades wisely. But simply swinging a sword is not enough. Preparation for combat is as important as the combat itself. The game literally forces you to think ahead. Are you heading into a dungeon teeming with corpse eaters? Then don’t forget:
- Drink the “Cat” potion – it will provide night vision and allow you to look through walls.
- Take a general strengthening elixir, which will increase your chances of survival.
- Stock up on bombs and traps to control the battlefield.
- Prepare sword oils in advance, which will help you deal with the creatures faster.
Moreover, you can’t drink potions on the go – only before a fight. This means that every decision must be meaningful. Especially since in The Witcher 2, darkness is not just a darkened screen, but a real pitch darkness, through which you can’t see anything without preparation. Alchemy, by the way, also works according to its own strict rules. Want a powerful effect? Be prepared for side effects, such as a serious decrease in health and increased toxicity. In general, the stronger the bonus, the higher the price. But that’s the beauty of the combat system – it requires thinking, not just clicking.
Freedom, combat, bosses: why is The Witcher 2 so good?
It’s not often that you come across a game that lives up to expectations, but this is exactly the case. This is a large-scale RPG that can captivate you for a good 20 hours, even if you only follow the main plot. It offers the player significant freedom of action and at the same time does not forget about the most important thing – entertainment. And there are also huge bosses, as if we are not playing an action/RPG, but a Japanese slasher in the spirit of Bayonetta or the future Asura’s Wrath. What could be cooler?
However, the question arises: how will those who are not familiar with the original receive the game? Although, if you think about it, it is unlikely that The Witcher 2 will interest someone who is not aware of this universe at all. But for those who remember Geralt’s first meeting with Foltest and can name the Nilfgaardian emperor Emhyr var Emreis ten times in a row without hesitation, this will be a real gift.
