The Universim is one of the most promising and long-awaited god simulators, which has already managed to win the attention of fans of the genre. The game promises to be a real breakthrough, combining deep mechanics, a living world and impressive freedom of action. Like many others, I heard about The Universim back in 2014. At that time, a completely unknown studio, Crytivo Games, headed by Alex Koshelkov, launched a campaign on Kickstarter, and the result was impressive – almost $400,000 in a month. It was a loud start, which showed that interest in the god simulator genre has not gone anywhere, and it is too early to write it off. After all, games like Black & White or Spore once won the hearts of gamers, and then the genre seemed to fall into hibernation. But the appearance of The Universim breathed hope into its revival. Almost four years have passed, and the game is still in development. And this process is not going as fast as we would like – both for those who invested money in the project and for those who are simply following its fate with interest. The developers periodically release updates, but many have the feeling that a full release is still very far away. However, despite the drawn-out process, the community does not lose interest, because the concept of the game is really ambitious.

I bought The Universim six months ago, spent about 10 hours in it and, perhaps, would have played more if not for a number of controversial points, which I will tell you about later. In general, the game has great potential, but sometimes it seems that it has not yet been fully realized. Nevertheless, periodic updates still bring something new and interesting to the gameplay.

And recently another patch was released, adding the ability to hunt to the game. It would seem like a trifle, but it was this that became a signal for me: it’s time to return. As if the game itself gently whispered to me: “Well, is it time?” Well, if it is time, then it is time. I loaded The Universim again, launched my civilization and got ready to find out what has changed in recent months.

The Universim – When Managing a Civilization Becomes Fun

I will deliberately not go too deep into the mechanics and analyze every detail, because at the time of writing The Universim was still in the alpha testing stage. And this, as you understand, is far from the final version of the game – a lot can change. Therefore, I will tell you briefly and to the point.

The Universim is, in fact, a classic representative of the god simulator genre. The game already allows you to do great (and not so great) deeds: punish, reward or just watch your wards, which are called nuggets here (and no, they have nothing in common with chicken nuggets – I checked). Wanted to fry a couple? Please. Tired of the village? It takes a couple of seconds to create a hurricane. And this is only the beginning of the list of divine entertainments.

At this stage, the gameplay is quite simple: the player decides what to build next, what technologies to develop, and tries to prevent the nuggets from dying out – be it from hunger, thirst or just their own stupidity (and this is a real problem). Development is tied to technology: the further you advance, the more buildings and opportunities open up. In addition, you yourself distribute nuggets by profession and can even engage in… matchmaking. By the way, incestuous marriages in The Universim are not a bug, but a feature. Brother and sister? Why not. The main thing is to ensure stable population growth.

In addition to the unusual approach to demographics, the game pleases with original finds. For example, nuggets interact with you through a special building reminiscent of the frontal place from “Dom-2”, and its interface is a parody of Gmail. They send letters with complaints and requests, and your task is to decide whether to help them or mercilessly send the request to spam. Requests are different:

• Find a missing child.
• Resolve a domestic conflict.
• Send someone to the next world (yes, that happens).
• Find the “most beloved stone” (this request, of course, immediately flies into the trash).

All this adds humor to the game and prevents boredom.

But the main thing is the world of The Universim itself. Even at an early stage, it feels alive: mammoths and deer roam around settlements, huge whales splash in lakes (yes, in lakes), and the seasons change one after another, as if an artist decided to demonstrate his palette. And natural disasters like hurricanes, fires and thunderstorms look so impressive that you want to arrange them again and again.

The Universim Review Summary – Is It Worth the Wait?

You may have noticed that I changed the usual subtitle of the final paragraph – instead of “play” I chose “wait”. And this is not accidental. The fact is that it is quite difficult to fully enjoy The Universim now – I have never been able to bring the game to its logical conclusion. Each time the end came not by my will, but because of critical bugs.

Nevertheless, as long as the game did not break, I had a lot of fun. The Universim has incredible charm and a special atmosphere that captivate from the first minutes. Yes, sometimes the nuggets suddenly decide to stand still and simply stop doing anything, dying of hunger and thirst. But even despite this, the game immerses you in its world so much that you want to forgive it for these shortcomings.

At the same time, the game still has a long way to go. It does not yet have many key mechanics – for example, the influence of climate on nuggets, space colonization or global disasters that the player will have to cope with. But The Universim has enormous potential, and these are not just words – the first steps in this direction have already been taken, and they are impressive. If you are a fan of the “god simulator” genre, you are unlikely to be put off by bugs. You can’t buy the game on Steam yet, but it is available through the Crytivo platform.
