And now for the main course. Bosses. This is where Khazan stops just entertaining and starts testing who you are. Each fight is a dance on the blade, where one wrong move means death. Especially when the boss starts playing by your rules: his endurance is like yours, and after a crazy series of attacks, he opens up to your “brutal greeting”. The last time I experienced such pleasure from the combat system was in Sekiro – and not always.

To at least somehow soften the blows to pride, Khazan adds a couple of reasonable compromises. Even when you lose, you earn experience and skill points. That is, you don’t stand still, but rather crawl forward on your elbows, drenched in sweat and defeats. There is also an AI partner – like a roulette: sometimes he helps, sometimes he just watches how the boss kneads you. But it’s better this way than being completely alone. But what’s frustrating is the path between these battle peaks. The locations are mostly straightforward, albeit with rare branches and visual diversity. They can’t be called bad, but they don’t fill you with delight either. After a couple of hours, you start to catch yourself thinking: “Maybe I should just teleport me straight to the next monster?”

From icy mountains to sandy camps: what awaits in the world of Khazan

Khazan immediately catches the eye – not so much with its graphics “on steroids”, but with charisma. The characters seem to have jumped straight out of an anime, but with a twist: stylish cel-shading makes them almost alive. They are bright, bold, catchy. And what’s interesting is that against the background of more realistic backgrounds, this contrast does not look wild, but impressive, as if you are looking at art that has suddenly come to life.

Peak moments are a real visual feast. Bosses appear with drama, like stars on the red carpet, and cutscenes look like they were made with love and attention to each frame. Parries? Not just mechanics – a whole firework of sparks and emotions. And when you launch Brutal Attack, the feeling is as if you are filming the final scene of an action movie: powerful, beautiful, deserved.

As you progress, Khazan pleases with the environment – it is not only beautiful, but also atmospheric. Particularly memorable:

• snowy mountain trails with icy winds;
• ancient temples eaten away by darkness;
• melancholy fishing villages;
• desolate camps buried in dust.

Each location feels fresh at first, but towards the end the variety starts to wane. A sense of deja vu arises – how long can you wander through the next mines, caves and ruins?

But you know what was a pleasant surprise? Performance. Khazan simply flew on my system (RX 6800 XT, i5 12400F, 32 GB RAM) – no bugs, no freezes, no texture surprises. Everything is clear, smooth and stable, as if the game was polished specifically for my machine.

In Khazan, sounds don’t just accompany combat — they become full-fledged participants in it. The clang of swords when parrying sounds like you’ve struck a bell on top of a mountain. An enemy’s miss is a sharp whistle of air past your ear, as if a bullet had flown by a centimeter. And when you fly into an enemy with Brutal Attack, you hear such a juicy crunch that somewhere in the world, it seems, a Stradivarius violin is falling.

And this is not just a background — it is sound design that works on the senses. You don’t just see the fight — you feel it. The music does the same: at first it creeps somewhere on the edge of audibility while you explore gloomy corridors, and then suddenly explodes when the battle with the boss begins. In places, it even adapts to your actions, as if the conductor is standing somewhere behind you.

The voice acting is a separate thrill. Ben Starr (the one from Final Fantasy XVI) sounds like he’s living every line, and Anthony Howell (Margit from Elden Ring) plays the sarcastic ghost blade with such vile grace that you want to both slap him and shut him up at the same time. Which is a compliment, by the way.

Here’s what makes the game’s audio truly outstanding:

• Haptic combat audio that makes every blow feel physical.
• A dynamic soundtrack that adapts to the situation, creating a lively soundtrack.
• A voice acting with charisma, where the actors don’t just read their lines, but live them.

Unfortunately, all this splendor of sound and images is in stark contrast to what is happening in the plot. The plot seems classic – revenge, blood, honor, everything as it should be. But here’s the problem: there is no soul in this story. Everything is presented through static sepia slides, and you don’t so much empathize as simply watch from the side, as if you were leafing through an album of someone else’s memories.

The main character, Khazan, is not that bad – he is just nothing. Gloomy, dark, and… that’s it. He is like porridge without salt: like food, but does not please. Enemies and allies appear and disappear, like actors in a theater where there were no rehearsals, and the audience does not care.

If you are a fan of Dungeon Fighter Online, you may catch a couple of pleasant lore hints. But if you are a newbie like me, then the plot will seem more like a bridge between arenas than a full-fledged story. You’re not here for an emotional journey – you’re here to crush skulls. And frankly, it feels good to crush them.
