Terraria
Welcome to VPEsports! Today we have Terraria. Where should I start? The thing is, it’s an incredibly complex game that is constantly changing and evolving. Let’s start from the very beginning and gradually get to the recent major update.
Terraria is an action platformer in a sandbox. That is, you appear in the world and are free to do whatever comes to mind: dig, mine ore, make armor, dig some more, storm dungeons, kill bosses and look for cool artifacts. And, of course, you can build, but not for the sake of the process of building, but so that NPCs come to live with you, from whom you can buy all sorts of necessary things.

From what we can gather, there is definitely a story, but it remains largely hidden from players within the game itself. Unfortunately, you won’t come across any notes that reveal the backstory, nor will you meet any characters that engage you in meaningful conversations. Cutscenes that could shed light on the narrative are also missing, leaving a significant gap in the storytelling experience. It seems the developers have decided to share the story separately in a text file.
We’ll give you a video of the story below that will give you more insight! However, it’s best not to dwell on this aspect too much. During play, the focus tends to shift completely away from the story, and chances are high that you’ll forget it exists altogether. This lack of integration can leave players feeling somewhat disconnected from the larger narrative, which is a missed opportunity for a richer gaming experience.
Why Terraria is not a Minecraft copy, but a real adventure game?
The game was released on personal computers in May 2011. At that time, Minecraft clones were not multiplying like mushrooms after rain, and Terraria was even more different from the famous game.
Anticipating the well-known comments, I would like to say: Minecraft always eventually rolled down to construction, while Terraria is about exploration, adventures and treasure hunting. So these two games cannot be compared in any way.
Due to the fact that the game had a clear and uniform development system, it was completely captivating. You gradually increased the quality of your terraria armor and weapons, killed bosses and went to more serious dungeons. The game had a very strong atmosphere of exploration, and you constantly found something new. In addition, there were various random events, such as a meteorite falling and a goblin attack.
In short, the game gave you the opportunity to entertain yourself, but at the same time did not forget that it was still a game, not a constructor. So it was not boring. It had tons of stuff: guns, clothes, magic – there was always something to do. And it took hundreds of hours to unlock all the content.

New updates and endless ideas in Terraria
When update 1.1 came out, imagine that a global update was added to tons of content for hundreds of hours, which gave the same amount of gameplay. That is, let’s say you play regular Terraria, collected the best guns and gear, already yawning, destroying all the terraria bosses … and then the game offers you to go to Hell, where you feel at home in food. And you throw a Voodoo doll into the lava.
And suddenly a new terraria boss is rolled out on you – the Wall of Flesh, after killing which your world goes into the so-called hard mode. In it, your super terraria armor, which you stuffed for 20 hours in Hell, no longer saves you – you are torn to pieces by the most ordinary night mobs in the clearing. And you continue your progress: new ores, new monsters, new bosses, new territories … In short, hundreds more hours of quality gameplay.
A lot of time has passed since that update, the game has already been released on consoles, recently appeared on tablets, and some developers have already released a beta of the game’s ideological successor – Starbound. And then suddenly, on October 1, 2013, Terraria released a new update numbered 1.2. And imagine that you already have a game with several hundred hours of content… and this amount has doubled again! This is just crazy. They give us absolutely free of charge what some companies (we will not point fingers) ask for 60 bucks for.
The game has added more than a thousand new items, several new bosses, new locations, new ores, many small gameplay changes. Now there is a map, and your character can automatically rise to the height of one block on the go. In short, it is impossible to replay.
But, unfortunately, I must say that the new update also has a significant negative factor. Now the game simply has too much stuff. I never thought I would say this as something bad, but it is. Terraria maps are a limited world, and considering how many different biomes there are now, they just don’t fit. For example, having created four worlds, I never saw a honey biome and never met a bee terraria boss.
When you kill the Wall of Flesh, go to hardmode.
A File biome with fairies and unicorns should appear in your world, and it, together with the corrosion of the infected territory, should go through the earth all the way to Hell. But, for example, in a small world this does not always happen, because natural obstacles like jungles appear. As a result, your world, in which you have probably already built a cool house by that time, turns out to be useless, because it does not have the things necessary for development. And you are forced to create a new world, and then move from one to another, dragging things back and forth. Thus, improvements were made in favor of the game’s playability and over time, updates from 1.0.0 to 1.4.4.9 passed 11 years and the developers looked at player feedback, analyzed and corrected shortcomings.
Chests and rare keys in Terraria
There are thousands of new things in the game, but the coolest of them can be found either in new super chests or they drop from enemies and bosses. And the chance that you will get exactly what you need is incredibly small. These new chests come in several types – for example, an ice chest, a jungle chest, and so on – and each of them requires a corresponding key. For example, to find a key to a jungle chest, you must go to this very jungle and beat enemies until you get that very key in terraria.
But the problem is that the probability of getting this key is, just think about it, one in four thousand! People have been hammering enemies for dozens of hours, and they have not gotten anything. Therefore, very often the gameplay in Terraria 1.4.4.9 rolls into a stupid and endless farm of enemies and bosses, which is very sad and kills the atmosphere of the adventure.
And in general, the game is simply packed to the brim. It’s like a buffet – your eyes run wide, and you don’t know where to grab. So the gradual development of the game is slightly destroyed. But nevertheless, it’s still Terraria, only now with billions of content.
If you loved it before, it’s time to install it again. And if you’ve never played it, it’s time to try it. Rarely does a game bring so much pleasure simply from the fact that you discover new interesting things and new places for yourself.
There are only 4 difficulty levels in the game:
- Adventure (creative, if you like).
- Classic (or easy).
- Expert (hard).
- Master (Very hard).
In addition, there are four game classes to choose from, each with its own weapons:
- Warrior (chains, swords, spears).
- Shooter (bows, firearms, grenade launchers).
- Mage (Magic, respectively).
- Summoner (minion summoning rods and whips).
Friendly NPCs are present throughout the game. At first glance, they may seem like useless merchants selling junk. In fact, it only made sense to include one merchant, so constant questing around the lands in search of the right NPC became a regular activity for players.
We highlight the wandering merchant, who has a chance to appear in the early morning hours. This intriguing event occurs approximately every three days in real time (or approximately every hour of gameplay). Each time he appears, his inventory changes significantly, offering players a new selection of items. Some of these special goods may never appear on his counter, even after you have spent 100 hours on the game. The most scorching infernal pot is set aside for the developer who created an achievement that requires players to complete an astonishing total of 200 fishing quests. Each day, a single quest becomes available, and after finishing it, players have to patiently wait until the next day to tackle another. How thrilling this setup is, truly remarkable! Bravo to the creativity behind it!
