Teardown Game Review – Total Destructibility and Freedom of Action
Teardown is a unique sandbox with a fully destructible environment and voxel graphics, which initially gained popularity on PC. In November, the game reached consoles and even immediately got into the PlayStation Plus subscription, which gave it a great start. It would seem that success is guaranteed – if the porting is done well. We tested Teardown on PlayStation 5 and are ready to share our impressions.
It is worth noting right away that PC and console players are two different audiences with different expectations. What goes well with PC gamers does not always resonate with console owners. Especially when it comes to sandboxes, where not only creativity is important, but also ease of control.
Control and console adaptation
In Teardown on PS5, the controls have been adapted minimally – the camera and interaction with objects remain the same as on PC, where controls are built around a mouse and keyboard. On a gamepad, this control style feels awkward. Although you can get used to it, it still makes the game less comfortable.
Most likely, because of this, the console version did not receive the same excitement as on PC. If on computers the game immediately found its audience thanks to mods, fine-tuning of controls and more flexible gameplay, then on consoles all this was questionable.
- Teardown’s controls on PS5 are minimally adapted for a gamepad.
- The camera and interaction with objects remain the same as on PC.
- The controls feel awkward on a gamepad, but you can get used to it.
- On PC, the game attracts an audience thanks to mods and flexible gameplay.
- On consoles, the controls are questionable, which reduces interest in the game.
In recent years, it has been difficult to rely on the ratings of major Western publications. They are often inflated and do not always reflect the real picture. Many high-profile releases receive a perfect 10 out of 10, even if in fact it is just a good game.
In the case of Teardown, critics again showered praise on it, but the difference between the console and PC versions is noticeable. While the game receives a lot of positive reviews on PC, many console players complain about inconvenient controls, lack of flexible settings, and poor optimization.
Graphics and Performance Teardown
On PlayStation 5, Teardown shows itself from a good side in technical terms. The graphics are made well, and players are offered two modes:
- Quality mode – 2880x1620p resolution at a stable 60 frames per second. However, minor drops are possible during explosions and sharp camera movements.
- Performance mode – standard FullHD with an increased frame rate, which tends to 120 fps.
Volumetric lighting adds atmosphere to the game, which is especially noticeable in dark locations with bright flashes of explosions.
However, owners of Microsoft consoles will face some limitations:
- On Xbox Series S, the game runs at 864p with a frame rate of 50-60 fps.
- On Series X, the results are similar to PS5, but without VRR support, screen tearing may occur.
Gameplay: Missions and Destructibility
In Teardown, the main campaign offers 40 missions that take place on 9 maps. The tasks range from destroying buildings to stealing various valuables. Unfortunately, there are fewer missions that focus on destruction than we would like.
The key feature of the game is detailed destructibility:
- Any building can be broken into small pieces using a crowbar, explosives or other tools.
- However, the physics of objects sometimes fail: buildings can be supported by fragile structures, which reduces realism.
Players have access not only to missions from the main campaign, but also to tasks from paid DLCs. These add-ons stand out for their futuristic theme and more interesting tools. The contrast between the original missions and add-ons becomes especially noticeable due to the different saturation of the locations.
Problems of control and dynamics
On consoles, the controls raise a lot of questions:
- It is not adapted for a gamepad and creates the feeling that the player interacts with the world through the mouse cursor.
- The selection of tools is done by cycling through the buttons on the cross, which slows down the process.
- The camera moves slowly, and the lack of auto-aim and sprint makes the gameplay less dynamic.
Additionally, the tight time frame for completing tasks limits players’ creativity. Instead of enjoying the destruction, you often find yourself in a race against time.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Impressive destructibility and graphics | Inconvenient controls on consoles |
Ability to plan complex chains of explosions and use vehicles | Low dynamics due to slow movement and time constraints |
DLC adds new locations and tools | Object physics sometimes breaks realism |
If the developers had reworked the controls for consoles and added multiplayer, the game could have become a real hit for this platform. For now, Teardown remains more of a PC fan project, where its advantages are fully revealed.
Teardown System Requirements
To comfortably launch and play Teardown, it is important to consider the technical requirements of the system. The game features impressive destructibility and detailed graphics, which requires fairly powerful hardware. The developers have indicated the minimum and recommended parameters so that each player can assess how well their device meets the requirements.
Teardown only supports 64-bit systems, which makes the game unavailable for older 32-bit OS. In the minimum configuration, you will need a quad-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and a video card of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 level to run the game. However, for a full immersion in the game, a more powerful configuration with an Intel Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 video card and 8 GB of video memory is recommended. In addition, it is important to consider that integrated graphics cards such as Intel Integrated Graphics are not supported, which excludes the possibility of running on laptops with a basic configuration. The game also requires 4 GB of free space on the hard drive, which is quite modest for modern games.
Minimum system requirements
Parameter | Requirement |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 10 (64-bit) |
Processor | Quad Core CPU |
RAM | 4 GB |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 (3 GB VRAM) or similar |
Disk Space | 4 GB |
Note | Intel Integrated Graphics are not supported |
Recommended System Requirements
Parameter | Recommended Requirement |
---|---|
Operating System | Windows 10 (64-bit) |
Processor | Intel Core i7 or better |
RAM | 4 GB |
Graphics Card | NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (8 GB VRAM) or similar |
Disk Space | 4 GB |
Note | Intel Integrated Graphics are not supported |
Teardown system requirements are quite democratic for modern games, but it is important to take into account some features. For comfortable gameplay on high settings and with maximum FPS, it is advisable to meet the recommended parameters, especially if you want to enjoy all the visual effects and unique destructibility.
If your device does not meet the requirements, there is a risk of encountering FPS drops and insufficient performance. Before installing, be sure to make sure that your system meets at least the minimum requirements. This will ensure a stable gaming process and give you the opportunity to appreciate all the advantages of the game.
