You can feel like a taxi driver in many open-world games – usually, it’s just one of the side attractions. But full-fledged taxi simulators are a rarity. Perhaps because it’s not so easy to keep players’ attention on the routine of trips. But the developers of Taxi Life decided to take a risk. Their new project invites us to Barcelona – a bustling metropolis, where everyone is in a hurry to do their own thing. The player’s task is to pick up passengers and deliver them to where they urgently need to go.

One of the main “features” of Taxi Life, according to the developers, is Barcelona, ​​recreated on a scale of 1:1. Unfortunately, I have not been to the capital of Catalonia myself, but I arranged a virtual tour using Google Maps. I compared – and, I must admit, it is similar. The Arc de Triomphe, the Guell Palace, the cable car – many famous places are in place. The streets, of course, have been edited, but in some areas everything is so close to reality that I was really impressed. For example, in the area where the old monument to the mayor stands, in life there is a long bike parking – in the game it is also there and is located in exactly the same way. All these attractions have become part of the collection: you find them, interact with them – a short story opens up. We play as a newbie taxi driver who, after a quick tutorial, immediately gets behind the wheel. You open the map – you see a bunch of green men. These are potential clients. Orders vary in route length, difficulty level and payment, but at first you don’t really choose — you take everything in a row. You can’t just drive around the city and catch passengers — you first need to select an order on the map. It’s convenient that after the trip is over, you are immediately offered to take the next client, no need to go into the menu again.

If you’re driving alone, you can do whatever you want on the roads — drive through a red light, cut off, crash, even drive into oncoming traffic. The police can fine you, but the fines are penny-pinching — you’ll survive. Even for hitting a pedestrian, you’ll only be charged a hundred euros. It’s unpleasant, of course, but not fatal — you’ll get it back on the next trip. But when there’s a passenger in the car, you shouldn’t relax. He notices everything: if you’re standing on a crosswalk — minus to your mood. If you hit someone else’s car — he’s unhappy. If you hit a pedestrian — the game immediately ends the trip. The number of mistakes directly affects your tips. And if you drive carefully, you’ll get bonus experience. I even tried not to speed – all for the sake of an extra couple of points.

Sometimes you can chat with passengers. Someone will ask you to turn off the loud radio, someone is irritated by a bug on the glass. And some just start a conversation: “Do you like your job?”, “How do you like the city?”. You can answer politely, or you can be rude. The second option sounds a little strange, but, apparently, for those who want to play the role of a cheeky taxi driver. I preferred to be polite – at least they give experience. In fact, there are few picky passengers. And even if the fines are small, the motivation system works – you want to drive carefully. At first, I was tempted to rush around the city, like in GTA, but then I started to get into it: wait at a traffic light, slow down in an alley – it’s normal. It’s just a pity that the AI ​​sometimes lets you down: pedestrians brake in the middle of the road, cars suddenly fly into you from behind. The latter, fortunately, does not spoil the patience of the passenger, but if after this you crash into someone yourself – hold on.

Damaging the car is also unprofitable. Passengers pay attention to its appearance, and if the body is battered – the tips are smaller. Fortunately, you do not need to look for a service station – there are many garages around the city. There you can fix everything, fill up and even decorate your taxi. Earn some money – change the spoiler, install neon lighting, repaint the body. The interior is also available for upgrade: upholstery, gearshift lever, figurine on the dashboard. It’s a pity that the customization is modest – you can’t build your dream car, but it will do for variety.

What can you do in the garage in Taxi Life and why you need to upgrade

Although at first glance it may seem that the garage in Taxi Life is just a place where cars are parked, in fact, it plays a much more important role. This is where your journey as a taxi driver and future manager of your own car company begins. Through the garage, you process orders, interact with clients, look for attractions, and most importantly, upgrade your skills. For any activity, you get experience, and with it, special points that can be spent on passive upgrades. The upgrade system, although simple, is pleasantly woven into the gameplay: it motivates you to explore the city, take more orders and just be active.

What exactly can be improved? For example, reduce fuel consumption, slow down the pollution of the body, reduce fines for violating traffic rules or unlock more profitable orders. All these bonuses seem not very impressive – there are no fiery accelerations or crazy drift improvements – but they are in harmony with the general idea of ​​​​a realistic simulator. Separately, it is worth mentioning the perk that increases the amount of experience received for discovering landmarks – it is worth activating first, especially if you want to level up your character faster and open up more opportunities.

The game pleasantly surprises in that it gradually turns you into not just a driver, but the owner of a small taxi fleet. As soon as you get a second car – and this happens quite early, if you are not lazy with orders – the fleet management function is unlocked. This is a full-fledged gameplay layer: you hire drivers, assign them to cars, determine areas for work and set schedules. Each hired driver has his own pros and cons. One, for example, may work longer than others, but consumes more fuel. Another drives carefully, but slowly. Someone may get into accidents more often, because of which you will spend more money on repairs. The system is quite simple and does not reach the level of a full-fledged strategy, but still adds depth to the game and gives an incentive to buy more cars, upgrade them, expand the business.

However, this is where the list of really interesting features of Taxi Life generally ends. Yes, this may disappoint those who were expecting a large-scale economic strategy or a complex simulator with a bunch of mechanics. Everything is simple and quite down-to-earth here: car customization is minimal, leveling up is linear, and fleet management performs more of an auxiliary function than becoming a full-fledged gameplay pillar. All trips – from short to long – come down to the same thing: pick up a passenger, take him to the point, get paid. Yes, the route can be longer or shorter, the road – more or less busy, but the essence remains the same. Sometimes you catch yourself thinking: what else could be added here to make it truly diverse? However, it is important to understand that the game does not strive to be Crazy Taxi or something in the spirit of GTA Online – this is not an arcade with a frantic pace, but rather a leisurely, measured simulator of a taxi driver in a modern city. And in this regard, it fully lives up to expectations. You do your job, slowly deliver passengers, monitor the condition of the car, explore the city along the way and spend money on upgrades. It may seem like a routine – and it really is a routine – but it has its own charm.

Personally, I got exactly what I expected from the game. I got a job in virtual Barcelona and spent several exciting days in Taxi Life. Most of the time was spent on trips, but thanks to the atmospheric city, convenient controls and unobtrusive dialogues with passengers, this routine did not feel like an obligation, but like a pleasant relaxation. The city is beautiful, alive, especially if you turn off the HUD and just drive intuitively. And over time, you begin to remember the streets, turns, you know where you can go a little faster, and where it is better to slow down. At some point, you stop looking at the map – you navigate by familiar buildings and routes, like a real Barcelona taxi driver.

When you have pumped up all the skills, the car becomes almost invulnerable: damage and dirt are no longer annoying, and you only go to the garage for repairs out of habit. This gives a pleasant feeling of progress. You see how you have turned from a beginner into a confident driver who has the car, employees, and earnings under control. Yes, Taxi Life is not perfect. It has gaps and undeveloped ideas. But if you are looking for a simulator in which you can just relax, drive around the city, feel the atmosphere and slowly develop – this is just the case. There will be no wild action, but there will be comfort, calm and a feeling that you are really part of a big city.

Taxi Life is not a game for those looking for surprises. This is a real taxi driver simulator without unnecessary gloss: get behind the wheel, accept an order, take the client, take the next one – and so on in a circle. A kind of leisurely working everyday life-style. If you like to just drive around the city and carefully follow the traffic rules – you’ve come to the right place. But it’s still better to wait for a couple of patches: now the behavior of pedestrians and drivers sometimes leaves much to be desired.

But those who are hoping for something more intense – with leveling up, unusual orders, customization and other delights – should look for an alternative. The name speaks for itself: Taxi Life is about routine, not about entertainment. This approach is not for everyone.

What I liked:

• Pedestrians behave strangely, and drivers sometimes cause accidents out of nowhere.
