The developers managed to harmoniously combine elements of survival and exploration, added a gripping plot and immersed all this in an amazing underwater world. Moreover, caring for vital signs does not turn into a routine, and the story, in which alien civilizations are involved, keeps you in suspense. And all this is against the backdrop of stunning landscapes and fantastic inhabitants of the ocean.

You wake up in a rescue capsule, which is drifting on the surface of an endless ocean. A few minutes ago, your scientific reconnaissance ship “Aurora” fell from the sky, leaving behind a fiery trail and tons of debris sinking into the water. There is no connection with the homeland, food and drink supplies are running out, and all around is a bottomless blue abyss. You will have to survive somehow. The first goal is simple – to find food and resources. You catch funny, sometimes strange fish, turning them into dinner or a supply of drinking water. You wield a scanner, studying the local flora and fauna. Slowly but surely, you collect materials, create equipment, strengthen the shelter. All for the sake of one day leaving this planet.

But here’s the paradox – you don’t really want to rush to escape. The underwater world is fascinating. You swim through coral reefs, look at bright seaweed thickets, watch the sun’s rays refract in the water. You catch a fish that seems to be willing to fall into your hands. Sunsets here are a separate magic: the colors of the sky dissolve in the waves, and drops of water, flowing down the glass of the helmet, look terribly realistic. Subnautica feels especially impressive in virtual reality. This is not just a game – it’s like an advertising brochure for an elite diving resort, only many times better.

If you want to test yourself, you can always turn on the hardcore mode – one life, one chance, the slightest mistake and “gameover”. Or, on the contrary, make survival more relaxed by turning off the need for food and water. And in the “Creative” mode there are no restrictions at all: build, explore, enjoy.

Unusual Gameplay in Subnautica

The core gameplay remains familiar: diving into the ocean, collecting resources, building a base and transport to explore even deeper regions. As in the original Subnautica, survival elements play an important role here – you will have to monitor the oxygen level, hunger and thirst. However, you will not have to panic because of the lack of food: there are plenty of fish around that can be cooked, and sources of drinking water literally float in coastal areas.

Over time, obtaining oxygen ceases to be a problem: it is enough to get large cylinders or transport to practically forget about the limitations. Below Zero has more content on land, but there the survival mechanics work on a similar principle – only instead of oxygen, you will have to monitor the temperature. However, after creating an insulated suit and special vehicles, this complexity also fades into the background.

Instead of a massive submarine and a tiny bathyscaphe, the developers have relied on modular transport. The new device – “Morekhod” – can be adapted to any needs by attaching various modules to it. This allows you to turn it into a full-fledged mobile base or, on the contrary, make it more maneuverable by disabling unnecessary elements. However, such flexibility made the Crab suit practically useless. This mechanized spacesuit, which is designed to move along the bottom, used to be an important tool for extracting resources at great depths. Now its functions have been completely taken over by the Seafarer, and the abundance of resources in the game makes the need for the Crab almost zero. I went through the entire game without using it once – and did not feel any discomfort. On the one hand, modular transport really makes survival easier, but on the other hand, it upsets the balance. This applies not only to movement, but also to the arrangement of the base. In Below Zero, you can complete the story by building only a minimal set of modules, and even an underwater garage is essentially unnecessary. Yes, this gives freedom of choice – everyone can play the way they like, but in the original Subnautica, progress felt more balanced, and the survival mechanics did not lose their importance.

The underwater world and its inhabitants

The main star of Subnautica has always been one – the underwater world and its fantastic inhabitants. You spent almost all your time underwater, getting out on land only occasionally, and this created a feeling of complete immersion in an alien ecosystem. The locations looked diverse:

• Coral reefs are vibrant, alive, and full of safe creatures.
• Deep sea caves are dark and mysterious, holding valuable resources and deadly dangers.
• The Abyss is a nightmarish place where the most terrifying creatures lurk.

And if some creatures were simply pleasing to the eye, then others – real leviathans – kept you in constant suspense. These giants not only impressed with their size, but also scared you with their thunderous roar and sudden attacks. When you are at a depth of about a kilometer, making your way through a narrow tunnel in pitch darkness in your bathyscaphe and suddenly you hear this frightening howl … your heart stops. And then – a flash of movement, and a huge mouth flies out of the darkness. A real underwater nightmare.

In Below Zero, the map has become smaller, but it still impresses with its size. The division into zones still helps with orientation, and the exploration of biomes, as before, goes deeper. New locations are mesmerizing with a combination of flora and fauna, but they lose in scale. The smaller size of the world has an effect, although there is an advantage – it takes less time to explore.

As for the graphics, the situation is mixed:

1. The environment design is still stunning and conveys an alien atmosphere.
2. The textures are often low resolution, which spoils the overall impression.
3. Some elements look outdated even by indie game standards.

Leviathans and the Arctic in Subnautica

Unlike the original, in Below Zero the leviathans no longer seem frightening. If earlier an encounter with them was an event that you wanted to avoid at all costs, now they are perceived more as a hindrance. In the first game, there was a whole system of survival near monsters:

• You could turn off the light to remain unnoticed.
• You could reduce engine power to not make noise.
• You could hide behind the terrain to avoid contact.

Here, these mechanics were removed. But they added a stun gun, which drives away any enemy with one discharge. This is, of course, convenient, but completely kills the atmosphere of fear and survival.

In the new part, the player will have to go to the surface, explore the Arctic territories and even move around them by transport. But here’s the problem – the Arctic itself looks faceless and does not catch. Snow, rocks, ice – everything is as you imagine, without any visual or gameplay highlights. Even the local leviathan – a huge worm – is disappointing. It jumps out from under the ground, knocks you down, growls and disappears. And so on in a circle. No threat, no wow effect, only irritation. The Arctic could have brought something new to the game, but instead the cold mechanics repeat the oxygen system from the original. Just watch the scale and warm up in time – that’s all “survival”. The strangest thing is that under water this same cold disappears, although it would be logical to make it part of the gameplay. Below Zero tries to build on the ideas of the original, but in some places it ends up simplifying what made the first game so tense and exciting. The atmosphere is still there, but the fear of the unknown is gone.
