I recently decided to dive into the classics, revisiting old city-building strategy games in search of forgotten gems. But, unfortunately, most of these games are very outdated. The graphics, which once looked impressive, now seem primitive, and the mechanics that once seemed innovative look clumsy by modern standards.

The pleasure from the process is indescribable – you see how your settlement lives and develops, how people go to the forge, bakers load bread into the barn, and guards walk around the walls, keeping order.

But building is only half the battle. Any castle will sooner or later be attacked, and you will have to choose a defense strategy: Build massive walls, turning the castle into an impregnable citadel. Use archers on towers that easily repel enemy attacks. Create traps that slow down the enemy’s advance. Every decision has consequences. Building high walls is expensive and time-consuming, and maintaining an army requires large supplies of food and gold. But the feeling of satisfaction from successfully defending the fortress is worth all the effort. Stronghold is not just about building and battles, but about recreating the atmosphere of medieval life. Here, not only beautiful castles are important, but also the process of governing the state itself.

You will have to experience sieges, food shortages, epidemics and political intrigues, as if you yourself became the ruler of the medieval world. All this creates the effect of living history, where every choice affects the fate of the kingdom. Returning to the world of Stronghold, I once again feel the simple but incredible joy of creation. Every wall, every tower, every oven in the bakery is part of your story. This game is not just about strategy, but about the deep human need to build, protect and rule. Stronghold proves that the simplest concepts can be the most brilliant. This is not just a game, but a real art in which each player becomes an architect, a commander and a ruler of his own era. Let’s hope that in the future there will be new projects that can give the same level of pleasure as this legendary series. Despite the lack of worthy competitors in the genre, Stronghold remains the standard of medieval strategy. The game surprisingly accurately conveys the spirit of the era, allowing you to feel like a real lord who builds, manages and fights.
