It’s essential to find a balance between what consumers desire and what producers need to thrive and earn a profit.

This theme resonates in many economic simulation games, and Stronghold 3 is no different. As the third installment in the castle-building and economic real-time strategy series, it divides its campaign into two key components: the military campaign and the economic campaign. Each demands a keen understanding of how to cultivate and maintain the wealth, food, and industrial resources of your population while defending against various threats. Unfortunately, the combat that takes center stage in the military campaign, along with the meticulous management needed to nurture your emerging society in the economic campaign, often falls short of being truly engaging.

Stronghold 3: A Game of Survival Not for Your Subjects but for You

One of the most annoying aspects of Stronghold 3 is its catastrophic lack of explanation. Yes, the game has a built-in tutorial that introduces the basics: how to construct buildings, control the camera, and select units. But it abruptly stops there, leaving the player alone with a complex system that provides no hints or logical introduction to the game’s mechanics. From the very beginning, the campaign assumes that you already have a good understanding of the logistics of a medieval settlement and how to allocate resources. For example, when you start harvesting wheat, the game doesn’t bother to explain that it needs to be stored in a barn, not a granary. This is only the first step on a steep and awkward learning curve.

All this sounds logical, but the game is silent about it, forcing you to figure out the intricacies of the economy by trial and error. One of the most striking examples of a flaw is the apothecary. This is a vital building that helps your residents get rid of diseases, which is especially important in the first economic mission. But here’s the catch: the game does not explain why it is needed, and only a few missions later you learn about its true purpose. And this is not an isolated case. Some buildings, for example, the church, remain a mystery – they can be built, but what role do they play?

Why are they important? The game does not consider it necessary to explain this. The “honor” mechanic deserves a special mention. It seems to be an important resource that should affect the gameplay, but … in the end, it is only needed to complete a couple of tasks. Its role is so vague and insignificant that it seems as if the developers simply forgot to complete this element of the gameplay. Because of all this, missions become not difficult, but simply confusing. The whole process of managing a settlement turns into a painful experiment, where you do not learn the game, but simply stumble blindly. For example, if you incorrectly place a grain silo or a barn, after a few hours you realize that your economy works three times slower than it could. The game does not forgive such mistakes, but at the same time does not even warn about them.

As a result, many players are forced to restart missions, because they initially built the base inefficiently. And the saddest thing is that they did not even know that they did something wrong until it was too late. The game sorely lacks a well-thought-out tutorial that would not only explain the basic mechanics, but also analyze the relationships between buildings, resources and the economy. A few more understandable tools in the training could turn the game from a survival test into a deep and exciting strategy. Unfortunately, without this, newcomers are simply lost, and even series veterans feel irritated by the need to guess how this or that mechanic works.

Stronghold 3: When Strategy Becomes Routine

Once you’ve got the hang of Stronghold 3’s mechanics, you can experience moments of perfect economic harmony. When all resources are balanced, the peasants are happy, and the economy is thriving, the game really shows its potential. For a settlement to grow and develop, it’s necessary to satisfy basic needs: varied food, enough housing, and if you want to go further, you can add beer and religious institutions to boost morale. All this requires fine resource management, especially if you have to create and maintain an army at the same time. In its best moments, Stronghold 3 really reveals itself as a complex but exciting strategy. However, such moments are short-lived. After a few hours, the game turns into a monotonous routine, repeating the same tasks. Defending the castle from waves of enemies, accumulating the necessary resources, completing the same type of missions – monotony quickly becomes tiresome, especially when you realize that all the challenges develop according to the same pattern.

To diversify the gameplay, the developers added random events. One moment your peasants may fall victim to wild bears, the next — a plague epidemic will break out in the settlement or an unexpected fire will destroy half the city. At first glance, such tests add unpredictability, creating additional challenges. However, the problem is that these events are not entirely random. After several attempts to complete the same mission, you realize that “random” disasters appear at the same moments. And if the first time an epidemic can knock you off track, then the second time you already know that you need to expect it around the tenth minute of the game. This kills replayability, turning even unexpected events into a predictable routine.

But the biggest drawback of Stronghold 3 is the battle system. If the economic part is still able to captivate, then the battles disappoint almost immediately. Instead of thoughtful tactics, the player can simply send soldiers towards the enemy and hope for the best. Yes, the units have certain strengths and weaknesses, but there is no depth in the balance system. After a week of playing and several patches, I hoped that the situation would improve, but no serious changes happened. In the first days after the release, battles were almost unplayable: Units refused to obey commands, freezing or just standing in place. Attacks on enemies did not work correctly, soldiers could simply ignore the enemy. The AI ​​is so weak that my soldiers sometimes just stood and watched as they were eaten by wolves.

The developers fixed some of these problems, but even after the updates, soldiers are still reluctant to respond to commands, and their movement and behavior remain awkward and unpredictable. For example, if one of your soldiers kills his target, he is  in no hurry to attack the next enemy – you have to manually direct each unit, which makes control tedious and inconvenient. Stronghold 3 could have been a great strategy game if the developers had polished it up. The economic part is sometimes enjoyable, and random events could have been a cool feature if they had been truly unpredictable.

Stronghold 3: There is potential but it is painful to play

Stronghold 3’s multiplayer mode is a waste of potential that could have been great, but instead it’s a complete disappointment. Many players simply can’t connect to online matches, and those who do manage to get into the game are constantly faced with sync errors. The stability issues here aren’t just annoying – they’re gamebreaking. There were times when the game crashed right before winning a tough multiplayer encounter, leaving me with hours wasted. There were multiple crashes when saving progress or starting a new mission. Firefly Studios acknowledges these bugs and releases patches, but how effectively they fix the situation is an open question. The most frustrating thing is that even with all its problems, Stronghold 3 sometimes makes it clear that the developers put their heart into it. For example, the peasants react to the lack of resources with funny comments, and their humorous phrases add warmth and humanity to the game. Details like these create an atmosphere that could make the game truly exciting.

In addition, the missions are monotonous: defending a castle, collecting resources, building a settlement – all this could be interesting if the game did not repeat the same tasks over and over again. At some point, all the dynamics disappear, leaving only a monotonous routine. The combat system is another weak element. Instead of tactical maneuvers, the player can simply send units towards the enemy and pray for luck.

The artificial intelligence is so weak that warriors can stand still under attack and not react. Commands are executed with a delay, units move chaotically and often do not obey orders. Instead of well-thought-out tactics, the game boils down to a simple calculation of the army’s size: whoever has more soldiers wins. There were several updates that slightly improved the troop management, but the problems did not disappear completely. In battle, you often have to fight not with the enemy, but with crooked controls, which greatly reduces the pleasure of strategic decisions. Stronghold 3 is based on an excellent economic model: resource balance, maintaining the happiness of residents, defending the castle – all this could be really exciting if other aspects of the game did not cross out its advantages.

Problems with multiplayer, monotony of missions, raw AI and crooked unit control make the game unattractive for most players. But if the developers continue to work on fixes, Stronghold 3 can still become a pleasant surprise. For now, this is an unfinished project that has ideas, but no high-quality execution. Fans of castle strategies are waiting for the game to finally become what it should have been from the very beginning.
