The story, alas, leaves much to be desired, and the behavior of the artificial intelligence sometimes reaches the point of absurdity – the inconsistency of the opponents’ actions prevents you from getting real pleasure from strategic planning. In addition, bugs and errors are more common than we would like, which affects the overall impression – we have a product that clearly lacked final polish.

Nearby is a warehouse filled to the brim with weapons, wood, and stone – these important resources that ensure the defense of your bastion. To increase your wealth, you can build special buildings, each of which produces certain products. Thus, step by step, a modest village turns into a thriving fortress.

However, do not be afraid of the complexities of economic management – in Stronghold 2 this aspect is intuitive and does not require exhausting micromanagement decisions. The missions are quite similar in nature—your objective is to gather a specific quantity of resources within a designated timeframe. In this context, the adversaries you face are either bandits looking to make easy gains or wolves that are eager to find a warm meal to satisfy their hunger.

For those who enjoy a calm and leisurely pace, the campaign can be quite appealing. However, for ambitious players and aspiring commanders eager to make their mark, the “military” campaign offers a more demanding and exciting path. Here, don’t expect an easy stroll through the game world. You’ll not only need to meticulously construct your castle and gather a formidable army, but you’ll also face the challenge of maintaining control over that castle or deciding to go on the offensive afterward. The campaign is designed in an engaging way; for instance, in one chapter, you’ll encounter several missions set on the same map. This clever structure means that after you’ve built your castle once, you won’t need to repeat that task in the subsequent mission—there are far more pressing matters to attend to, such as strategizing your next move or planning your attack. It’s also important to highlight that neither campaign requires you to lose sleep over strategies, pondering endlessly, “How can I achieve victory?” The enemy’s AI is relatively simplistic, allowing you to devise a consistent strategy that can be applied whether you’re defending your stronghold or launching an assault on your foes.

The simplest method to safeguard your castle is to encircle it with a cheap wooden barrier in several layers. Just take a moment to observe the foolish computer! It sends its entire army to demolish those very barriers, completely unaware of the strategy at play, while your skilled archers, stationed high on the towers, effortlessly pick them off one by one. Even if the opponent possesses formidable siege equipment, it won’t make a difference; they simply don’t know how to utilize it effectively. Once you finish the campaigns, which can take roughly 15 to 20 hours depending on your pace, you can dive into new challenges and adventures. The free mode serves as a genuine “castle simulator,” allowing for endless creativity. There’s nothing particularly remarkable about it—just build, thrive, and enjoy life within your fortress, then build some more—until you eventually tire of the routine. Naturally, there’s also an online mode available, but it hardly merits our attention given its lack of depth and engagement.

The main innovation that distinguishes the second part of Stronghold from the first is the transition to a full-fledged three-dimensional space. Players can now freely zoom in and rotate the camera, which gives the strategy visual depth and opens up additional angles for observing battles. However, the joy of these opportunities quickly fades due to the frankly weak graphical implementation. Character animations, be they soldiers or peasants, leave much to be desired. Particularly annoying are gross visual bugs, such as objects passing through each other: for example, a peasant with an armful of firewood calmly walks through a cart, breaking the immersion in the game. At first, such scenes can make you smile, but very soon they begin to tire. Although the soundtrack is present, it does not add any atmosphere or depth to the game – it is more background than expressive. The developers released patches, trying to eliminate technical flaws, but not all the shortcomings were corrected. The built-in mission editor was supposed to be a step towards more creative gameplay, but its functionality is clearly not enough to compensate for the project’s main miscalculations.

Ultimately, Stronghold 2 is a disappointment – even ardent fans of the original are unlikely to be kept for long. Instead of evolution, we got a step back, which turned into a series of missed opportunities.
