Street Fighter V
The launch of Street Fighter V was more like a cruel joke in the spirit of Monty Python, where everyone was fooled: developers, players, and just fans of fighting games. Two main problems: a week after the release, the online mode still hasn’t worked properly, and there is practically no single-player content here.
The situation is especially funny (or sad?) complemented by the official Twitter, where the developers cheerfully report on problems with the servers. Formulations like “we hope” and “trying to figure out the reasons” sound as if they themselves do not understand what is happening. And this is really a shame, because Street Fighter V is the very fighting game that you should not miss, even if you are not a fan of the genre.

If you didn’t care much about Street Fighter V tournaments before, now is the time to take a closer look. The fifth part of the series was created with an eye on eSports, and there is nothing superfluous here. The main goal is to win in Ranked Match, and if you can’t do it yet, then all that’s left is to train: spend hours honing combinations online or polishing your reflexes on a dummy in the training room.
Wanted a classic arcade mode with a beautiful ending? That’s left in the fourth part. Maybe challenges to pump up skills? Sometime later, with a patch. There aren’t any at the start. Story mode? Two or three fights with dull illustrations. Capcom promises to add a detailed story in the spirit of Mortal Kombat in the summer. In the meantime, all that’s left is training and Survival, which you’ll have to go through to earn in-game currency and unlock additional costume colors. That’s where the content ends. The multiplayer is also not great: it works unstable, and in the lobby you can only create a room for two players.
The price for the game in this form seems too high, but Capcom assures that all future updates – new characters, modes, costumes – will be “almost” free. “Almost” – because you will have to pay for them with in-game currency, which can be earned in matches. For example: one victory online brings 50 coins, and the first additional character, Alex, costs 100 thousand. Some can be obtained for completing the storyline and Survival, but these reserves do not last long. Therefore, players are immediately offered to buy a Season Pass or, which is even more convenient for the developers, periodically invest real money. Capcom explains this system by the fact that it wants to avoid confusion with re-releases like Ultra and make updates simpler and clearer.

This approach can be off-putting, especially if you are not used to competing with other players. In this case, there is only one correct option – to play with friends, where the main thing is not victory, but the number of buttons pressed. But if you still decide to try yourself in a competitive format, the new combat will quickly captivate you. Everything here feels intuitive, and the fourth part against the background of Street Fighter V seems raw and unpolished. Each fighter has a clearly defined style, and the fight can change in an instant, making any duel unpredictable.
16 characters, 16 fighting styles – who to choose?
There are 16 characters in the game. Half of them are familiar to anyone who is even slightly interested in video games, but the rest you will either have to get to know or remember where you saw them. You can roughly divide them by fighting style: some are good at everything, others rely on aggression, and others prefer defense and catch their opponents on mistakes. There are also masters of complex grabs – it is better to stay away from them. In each group there are newcomers who radically change the usual rules of the game. Let’s take Laura, for example. Formally, she is a grab specialist: she can instantly close the distance, carry out a series of powerful blows and finish everything with a spectacular throw. She also has a trick – she can grab an opponent right in the air, sharply soaring diagonally. But that’s not all. Laura is incredibly fast, she has a slow but still useful projectile, and she has classic lightning-fast techniques. As a result, she turns into an almost universal fighter. And her “super strike” is impossible to block – an unpleasant surprise for those who are used to playing defensively.
Another newcomer, Fang, relies on poisons. He can dodge an attack at the right moment and catch the enemy off guard. Nekali, on the contrary, seems clumsy, but if he manages to pin the enemy down in a series of blows, all he can do is watch his health bar drain. In addition, Nekali forgives mistakes – his energy reserve allows him to withstand more blows than most fighters.
The V-scale occupies a special place in the combat system – it activates special skills and puts the character into the so-called attack mode. It works differently for all 16 fighters. For example:
- Ryu’s V-ability allows her to parry attacks, but requires precise timing.
- Chun-Li has it simpler – she gets a multiplier of hits, and one kick counts as three at once.
- Feng enhances her poisons, causing constant damage to the enemy.
- Nekali enters a furious mode, increasing the speed and power of her attacks.
Unlike “super strikes” (here they are called Critical Arts) – powerful attacks that are guaranteed to cause great damage if they hit the target, the V-scale does not provide an immediate advantage. But it significantly expands the fighter’s capabilities, allowing him to adjust his fighting style to a specific situation.
Street Fighter V is a fighting game for those who are ready to go to the end
Street Fighter V is not just fights, but a whole world of nuances that are revealed only in fights with live opponents. This is what the entire philosophy of the fifth part is based on. If Street Fighter IV once brought fighting games back to the spotlight, then its successor no longer seeks to popularize the genre – it creates a platform for those who want to grow, understand the details and play at a professional level. Perhaps this is the only modern fighting game that is truly tailored for eSports.
But, no matter how much we would like to believe in a bright future, the game cannot be judged only by promises. At the start, Street Fighter V is a powerful combat system, but with tangible problems: the servers are unstable, and there is a minimum of content for a single game. The texts are translated, but the quality leaves much to be desired. There are strange wordings, typos, and formatting problems in places – and this is despite the fact that there is not much text in the fighting game.
If you love fighting games, have company to fight with, and don’t throw down your controller after a series of disappointing defeats, then Street Fighter V is the best the genre has to offer. But there’s a catch: the game clearly lacks content to justify its price, and online issues are frustrating even the most patient fans.
Pros
- Various and memorable roster of characters
- Flexible and deep combat system with clear controls
- Classic shoryuken is still in business
- Cross-platform multiplayer between PC and PS4
Cons
- If you are not a fan of online or you do not have partners, the game will quickly become boring
- Visually – for an amateur
- The servers at the time of release work disgustingly: finding an opponent can take up to half an hour
