Steep

For many, winter childhood is associated with sleds, skis, skates, hockey in the yard and, of course, snowballs. It is unlikely that anyone who grew up in the snow has not experienced these joys at least once. And having grown up, we are not always ready to say goodbye to winter fun – it’s just that over time, sleds are replaced by snowboarding or alpine skiing, and instead of the nearest hill in the yard, snow-covered slopes of real resorts appear. But what to do if there is no opportunity to escape to the mountains, and the heart asks for extreme sports? Ubisoft found the answer – the game Steep invites everyone to conquer virtual peaks. This is not just a sports sim – it is an open world where you can try yourself in a variety of winter disciplines. And not only on skis: the snowy expanses in Steep open up a lot of ways for active recreation, even if you are currently not leaving the house.

The idea of games where you need to rush down the mountain at full speed is not new – such games appeared back in the era of NES and the first PlayStation. Even then, you could comfortably sit on the couch and feel like a conqueror of snowy slopes. From recent ones – I remember SNOW, an indie game that appeared in “Early Access” on Steam just before the Olympics in Sochi. The name speaks for itself, and even more eloquent is the fact that the project has not yet left the beta stage.

Ubisoft approached the topic seriously and with its usual scope – fortunately, they already had experience: in 2008, Shaun White Snowboarding was released. This time, the scale is truly impressive from the very first minutes. Before us is an entire snowy highland, divided into large zones. In each – many starting points for different disciplines, settlements and hidden corners that you still need to get to.

At the same time, the vast expanses do not look empty or monotonous. If you turn up the graphics to the maximum and choose a good angle, the screenshots come out such that they can easily be confused with photos of real ski resorts. Sunrises, sunsets, dense coniferous forests, sparkling glaciers, snowy peaks and frozen lakes – all this creates the impression of a living and beautiful world. Sometimes you even catch yourself thinking: despite the crazy speed of the descent, you want to stop and just admire the view. The game allows you to change the time of day – if you want to ride during the day, or at night, if you like the moonlight more than the sun’s glare. At the same time, the change in weather is almost imperceptible: with rare exceptions, such as light snowfall or fog, nature behaves quite calmly.

But there is also a feeling of some “sterility”. In these mountains, you are always alone: no animals, no birds, no random encounters. The villages are empty, and only occasionally can you spot other extreme sports enthusiasts on the track. But there is more than enough freedom. No one limits your route: if you want, fly from the top in a wingsuit, if you want, go skiing or snowboarding, and if you are in a really airy mood, spread out your paraglider and fly over the slopes. The open world here is truly open, and each new attempt to find a way down can be unique. Everything depends only on your imagination.

What Steep offers: challenges, vehicles and crazy stunts

Of course, no one abandons the player to the mercy of fate among the snowy peaks. Yes, in Steep you can completely forget about competitions and just ride for your own pleasure – but the real magic begins when you take on the tracks and challenges created by the developers. This is where all the fun is revealed.

There is more than enough content. There are classic time trials, there are stunt challenges where you need to score maximum points, and sometimes – just go through all the checkpoints. You won’t be bored: four types of transport and a bunch of different tasks give you plenty of choice. Here’s how it works:

What Steep offers challenges, vehicles and crazy stunts

  • Skiing and snowboarding — downhill skiing, freestyle, jumps and grinds on railings.
  • Wingsuit — extreme flights at speed, where it is important to fly through checkpoints accurately and not crash into rocks.
  • Paragliding — leisurely, relaxing travels along air currents, with a view of stunning landscapes.
  • Bone Collector mode — crazy tricks and the most spectacular falls, for which, for some reason, they reward here.

The opponents are usually bots, and overtaking them is not a difficult task. Sometimes you come across live players along the way who are going the same route. You can throw them an invitation to join a group and ride together, but in general the competition is built around the records left by others – it is with them that the unspoken struggle takes place.

Getting at least a bronze medal on the first try is not an easy task. Sometimes you need several attempts just to get to the finish line without getting into something. But this is what fuels the excitement: if you want a medal, learn the route by heart, hone your moves, try again and again. In this sense, Steep is somewhat reminiscent of Trackmania – the same philosophy of repetition and bringing everything to automatism. Only here instead of cars – mountain slopes and snow whirlwinds. And when you look at world records – you even feel a little uneasy. It’s good that you can turn on the replay and make sure: yes, someone really did it. For real.

And if you get tired of racing and stunts, you can always switch to quests. They are not about sports, but about the atmosphere. Here you can shoot a commercial with a skier, and search for secret places in the mountains, and just leisurely walks to the desired point – however you want, so you can get there. These tasks help you breathe out, look at the beauty of the world and change the pace a little.

What does progress in Steep give and why is equipment needed here?

As is expected in modern games, there is a leveling system, but it is implemented a little strangely. Experience is given for literally everything: for completing tasks, for participating in races, even for simple walks or flights. By increasing your level, you level up your reputation, which in turn opens up access to new regions. However, this has only one practical meaning – you simply won’t be allowed on difficult routes if your character is still “green”.

You get in-game currency for winning races, and it can be spent on buying equipment or helicopter tickets – a kind of local taxi service that will take you anywhere. Most of the clothes must first be unlocked by receiving medals for completing challenges. But here’s the problem: all this equipment is almost exclusively cosmetic. You can change skis, suits or wingsuits as much as you like, but this has practically no effect on the gameplay. You still drive the same, and you fly the same.

steep review

The idea itself evokes conflicting feelings. On the one hand, it’s good that success depends on skills, not on clothes. On the other hand, why so many external improvements if they are useless? Some items the character sees only on himself, and even then with difficulty – not to mention other players. It’s unlikely that anyone will be delighted with the opportunity to change the color of his boots or attach an ice pick to his belt for beauty. Although, okay, some of the equipment can be useful – for example, a smoke bomb that leaves a spectacular trail in the air. But otherwise, it’s just a showcase with fashionable, but meaningless things.

But there is complete order with advertising here. Steep is stuffed to the brim with brands. Red Bull logos on every corner, tournaments and quests under the same flag, GoPro pops up at every convenient and not so convenient opportunity… Ubisoft clearly decided not to miss the chance to earn some money: the game itself is not cheap, and they added a season pass, and offer in-game currency for real money. But, to be fair, it’s worth acknowledging that for many players, all this branded paraphernalia makes the game much more realistic. It may seem like nonsense, but it adds to the atmosphere.

Is Steep worth playing in 2025?

Surprisingly, the developers of Steep really managed to sit on two chairs. On the one hand, the game is ideal for measured skiing on picturesque slopes and leisurely exploring the mountain landscape. On the other hand, it does not let go when it comes to competitions: again and again you want to break your own records on difficult tracks. It seems that now you will try for the last time … and then another couple of hours pass. Of course, there are some rough edges. For example, the music cuts off after each attempt – it seems like a small thing, but it completely ruins the mood. There is also a lack of real competition: most often you have to compete with timers, and not with real players, and this slightly impoverishes the emotions. Nevertheless, Ubisoft squeezed almost the maximum possible out of a seemingly simple idea.
