Steel Rats

Steel Rats

Picture America in the 1940s: the airwaves crackle with urgent radio announcements about a shocking alien invasion. Panic erupts as terrified citizens rush into the streets, realizing this isn’t merely another dramatic broadcast like H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds,” but a genuine assault by extraterrestrial robots, reminiscent of those seen in NieR: Automata. The only individuals who can truly stand against this terrifying threat are four fearless bikers from the rebellious gang known as the “Steel Rats.”

Now, imagine a thrilling fusion of Trials and Elasto Mania, enhanced with artistic elements inspired by Inside, all wrapped in a gritty, noir-infused retro-futuristic narrative. This is the captivating world of Steel Rats, where adrenaline, creativity, and survival collide in an unforgettable adventure.

There are four bikers in total, but we control just one at a time on screen, effortlessly switching among them as needed. We dash forward and backward, soar high and low, launching off ramps and picking up impressive speed while skillfully maneuvering the motorcycle in mid-air. After landing, we speed off once more, cutting through swarms of trash robots (the quirky name given here to alien invaders) and various obstacles—wrecked cars, twisted pipes, and other assorted debris that litter the landscape. Each member of this incredible quartet boasts a couple of distinctive combat abilities that set them apart. For instance, one can snag enemies with a powerful harpoon while racing past, while another delivers a devastating blow with the front wheel, sending out a shockwave that knocks back foes. Another biker unleashes a barrage of projectiles at enemies, aided by a clever pet trash robot that adds to the chaos. Lisa, the fierce female biker, ignites “metal scraps” with intense flames shooting from her exhaust pipes, leaving a trail of fiery destruction in her wake. Additionally, there are charged abilities available, such as mini-bombs that explode on impact, fiery trails that can set foes ablaze.

At last, every player can access an incredible super move that charges and activates when bikers whirl swiftly around their center. In this thrilling spin, they unleash impressive waves of flame, dazzling torrents of laser beams, or even several harpoons shot in all directions. Interestingly, this dynamic spinning maneuver not only looks spectacular but can also deflect incoming bombs aimed at you. When it comes to facing formidable “bosses” in this game, it turns out to be much simpler than trying to execute complex stunts while navigating your way out from tricky walls and ceilings. This adds a layer of strategy that keeps the gameplay exciting and engaging!

Biker upgrade

As you can see, our heroes primarily differ in their combat styles—there are no unique abilities available to help overcome obstacles, as seen in The Lost Vikings. This makes the decision of who to play a matter of personal taste or perhaps even practical necessity; if one of the bikers runs out of health during a mission, they will be unable to continue until the mission wraps up, adding a strategic layer to the gameplay.

All combat moves, along with passive perks that enhance health and energy reserves, increase the rotation speed of the circular saw, reduce lightning damage, and so forth, can be unlocked and upgraded using scrap metal. This valuable resource is collected from defeated (or, more precisely, sliced) junk robots and damaged metal structures scattered throughout the game world. Additionally, the scrap metal can be used to purchase exciting new skins for both the bikes and their riders, allowing players to customize their experience even further.

How do they do it?

In Steel Rats, the focus isn’t just on combat moves and upgrades; it’s about the exhilarating blend of speed, adrenaline, and performing jaw-dropping stunts. I mentioned Trials and Elasto Mania for a reason: in this game, you need to masterfully control a motorcycle racing at breakneck speeds, skillfully dodging obstacles, leaping into the air, and performing flips mid-flight, all while executing sharp 180-degree turns and stunning tricks that will leave players breathless.

Steel Rats characters

What truly distinguishes this game is the innovative ability to race along unique metal surfaces using circular saws, which stretch across walls and ceilings. This mechanic opens up exciting possibilities, allowing players to reach previously inaccessible areas, navigating up and down levels to escape from challenging spots like the depths of a collapsed mine or other difficult locations. The camera stays tightly focused on the action as the player races headfirst along the ceiling, transitions seamlessly to the wall, drops down, and then suddenly soars back up again. The thrill of such high-speed maneuvers creates an adrenaline rush that keeps players on the edge of their seats. It’s a heart-pounding experience that is simply unforgettable!

You can break your tongue and your fingers

An unusual performance can be reminiscent of a game where the main roles are played by steel stallions. We rush forward at a dizzying speed, deftly maneuvering among rushing trains, making our way along narrow, treacherous paths. Sometimes we climb sheer walls and ceilings, sometimes we desperately break out of a building engulfed in flames. With adrenaline pulsating in our veins, we jump from crumbling platforms, escaping from a giant steel press that falls down with a terrifying roar, trying to crush everything in its path. In the whirlwind of this chaos, epic fights with terrifying “bosses” await us – intense duels that test the limits of our skills. On the way, we encounter cunning traps that challenge reactions and ingenuity, as well as laconic but exciting puzzles that require an unconventional approach. We hook the rear wheel to special points, activate elevators, start power plants and set various mechanisms in motion to get further.

Of course, managing the game is far from easy—especially when you’re relying on the keyboard. I honestly can’t remember encountering any other game that demands so many keys to be pressed simultaneously in such a frantic and exhilarating manner. Each key is assigned to critical actions, like accelerating and braking, shifting directions, activating circular saws, performing sharp turns, and utilizing various combat skills. Plus, there’s the added challenge of shooting! Yes, you can also pick up ammo and fire at your enemies! While using a gamepad is definitely the more convenient option, with enough practice and dedication, you can adapt to the keyboard layout—the thrilling chaos and excitement make it all worth the effort!

Verdict on the game Steel Rats

This experience is enriched by stunning visuals, lively music, and exceptional design, skillfully blending retro-futurism (with a touch of noir!) along with brilliant angles and dynamic shots—like the moment when a small biker zooms across a bridge, framed by the silhouette of a bustling nighttime city or a massive creature emerging ominously from the shadows (which inevitably brings Inside to mind). Then there’s the plot. While it occasionally struggles to keep pace with the rapid action, lingering somewhat on the sidelines, it still manages to engage the audience through its unique and intriguing investigative style, led by a charming and resourceful female detective. The characters themselves are a true delight, consistently offering humorous insights and witty banter that showcase their varied personalities and relationships. This dynamic interplay adds richness to the storytelling. Ultimately, it serves as an almost perfect tribute to speed and biking—stylish in every way, from the artistic representation of motorcycle riding to its overall visual and auditory aesthetic. As for the controls, well, it’s also a compelling reason to finally invest in that gamepad you’ve been considering…

  • Pros: there is always a bit of adrenaline in the gameplay, mixed with speed, battles and tricks; beautiful bright characters; cool videos; music; external design.
  • Cons: keyboard controls are very complicated.
