Have you ever come across a game that seems like one thing based on the screenshots and description, but in reality is something completely different? This happened to me with Stardew Valley. When I first saw it in the list of paid games on Google Play, for some reason I decided that it was another survival game – there were a lot of them there at the time. I don’t know what played a role – the style, the description, or just the first impression.

But as soon as I launched the game, I realized how wrong I was. It turned out not to be a survival game, but a cozy pixel farming simulator. And not some boring one – the game is completely addictive. I was hooked on it on my phone back then and even called it in my own way – “Stradevari”. Then, during the New Year’s sale in 2019, I bought it on PC. Many seasons and events have passed since then, and I finally matured enough to tell you what Stardew Valley is and why it deserves attention.

The story of Stardew Valley begins in the distant past, when you were still a child. At the end of his days, your grandfather hands you a sealed envelope – with a request not to open it without special need. He says: open it only when you feel that the bustle of the city has finally burned you out from the inside. Only then.

Twenty years pass. You work in the faceless office of the huge Joja corporation, where every day is like the previous one. Monitors, papers, endless reports – and all this under the oppression of strict superiors. Rest – on schedule, like mercy from above. Sooner or later it affects. The hero, completely devastated, opens the very same drawer of the table … and finds an envelope. Inside is a letter from his grandfather. In it, he shares his story: once he himself got tired of the city race, went to the quiet valley of Stardew and there, in the middle of nature, built a farm, where he found peace and true happiness. Now he passes this farm on to you, believing that you will be able to continue his work.

Without thinking twice, the hero quits his job, collects some savings and sets off on a journey to the valley, where his new life begins. There he is met by Robin, a local carpenter with a kind smile and a love for a hammer. She is happy to see a newcomer: such guests are rare for the valley. Robin takes the hero to the farm… and its condition, to put it mildly, leaves much to be desired. But she encourages him, saying that excellent land is hidden under the rubble. The mayor, Lewis, appears right away. He warmly greets the new resident and is happy that his grandfather’s farm will come to life again. He explains that you can sell the harvest by simply putting it in a box near the house. Having said goodbye, Robin and Lewis leave.

The next morning, the hero wakes up and finds a gift from the mayor – parsnip seeds. A small start, so that there is something to begin with. And so your story in Stardew Valley begins. The plot, at first glance, may seem simple – the hero escapes from the city routine to the quiet of the village, as in Jade Empire. But, as often happens, leaving does not mean truly escaping. However, the simplicity of the plot is compensated by the rich inner world of the game. The main thing in Stardew Valley is the stories of its inhabitants. But about them – another time. Now let’s talk about the gameplay itself.

Where does a farmer’s journey begin in Stardew Valley?

The first thing every newcomer to Stardew Valley faces is creating their character and choosing a farm. The game offers quite a wide range of customization: you can customize your hairstyle, eye color, clothes, add accessories – in general, create your own unique hero. Moreover, you choose your favorite item yourself, and also decide who will be your pet – a cat or a dog, and even choose their breed.

But if everything is relatively simple with the appearance, then choosing the type of farm is already more complicated. When I first launched the game, there were only five options. Now, thanks to constant updates, there are as many as seven – and each has its own features. Let’s figure out how they differ so that you can choose the one that suits you:

• Standard farm — spacious, without special conditions. Suitable for those who want to build everything from scratch and to the maximum.
• River farm — lots of water, islands and a great opportunity for fishing.
• Forest farm — compact, but with rare resources such as mahogany.
• Mountain farm — an abundance of stones and ore for lovers of mining.
• Wilderness farm — classic during the day, but at night it turns into an arena for fighting monsters.
• Four Corners farm — ideal for playing in co-op, as it is divided into sections with different specializations.
• Beach farm — picturesque, with the ability to find items after high tide, but with restrictions on the use of tools.

As you can see, farms in Stardew Valley are not just a background element. Each has its own character, its own advantages and features. The choice depends only on your playing style. And when you decide on a farm, a real adventure will begin, which is also worth telling about separately.

Stardew Valley: More Than Just a Farm

Describing what exactly you do in Stardew Valley is not an easy task. Because the game is a real bag of wonders, where everyone will find something for themselves. You start with farming: planting parsnips, watering, harvesting… And then – bam! – you find out that there is fishing. A couple more days pass, and you are already in the mines with a pickaxe, fighting monsters, collecting resources and thinking: “Where does this fun end?” Spoiler: it doesn’t. The game does not force you anywhere, does not set limits – do you want to try everything at once? Yes, please.

It all starts quite modestly – a handful of seeds and hope for a harvest. You sell the first batch, buy new crops, and off you go. Just don’t think that you will be able to go all out right away – you will be limited by money and energy. The first ones will be sorely lacking, and the second ones fly away to everything in a row: plant a plant, cut down a tree, dug up a stone – and that’s it, there’s no strength left. Spent everything to zero – the hero will start crawling like a sleepy snail, and in the morning he will wake up not in the best shape, with half a bar of energy. Fishing here is a separate story. A small test of patience and accuracy. Saw a bite – click the mouse and join the mini-game: you need to deftly hold the fish in the green zone. Caught – well done, your profit. Didn’t cope – well, it happens. Sometimes, by the way, you can even fish out a treasure, if you’re lucky. So have more space in your pocket, suddenly luck will smile.

Gathering, resource extraction and mine digging go hand in hand. Trees, stones, ore – everything you need. Metals are smelted into ingots, tools are improved, the farm grows. The mines, by the way, are far from monotonous: the deeper you go, the more the environment and composition of minerals change. At some point, it seems to you that you have ended up in a completely different world. And that is why the routine of the mines does not turn into a boring obligation.

But with battles, everything is a bit controversial. Yes, you can be “knocked out” if your health drops to zero. But you will not die – you will simply wake up in the hospital with half of your HP, having lost some money and loot. The problem is different: battles feel inconvenient. Enemies attack from all sides, and there is zero room to maneuver. Flying creatures are especially annoying – by the time you drive them away, you will already have half of your health left. You will not be able to try everything – there is simply not enough time. The day in the game lasts from six in the morning until two in the morning. If you are late, the character will switch off wherever he is and “teleport” home, losing some progress. So planning your day is not just a recommendation, but a necessity.

And one more thing: the game has leveling. Don’t expect a skill tree like in an RPG, everything is simple and clear here. Five directions: farming, combat, gathering, mining and fishing. Every five levels – a choice of one of two specializations that give nice bonuses. And there is also a hidden parameter in the game – Luck. It affects literally everything: item drops, success in mines and even the contents of trash cans.

But you know what’s most surprising? Everything I’ve told you about is just the tip of the iceberg. There is more to come: crafting, cooking, casinos, the fate of the old club, animal husbandry, archeology, gardening, secrets and even arcade games within the game itself. There is so much content here that it is easier to dive in once and experience everything yourself than to read about it from the outside.

Villagers: Not just NPCs, but real people

As I mentioned, Stardew Valley doesn’t have a twisted, cinematic story — but that doesn’t make the game boring at all. The soul of the game is given to the villagers, each of whom holds a piece of the valley’s history. Gradually, as you get closer to them, interesting details of their past, experiences, and characters are revealed.

The game has its own relationship system: communicate with the villagers, give them gifts, participate in their lives — and in return, they will share stories with you through cozy cutscenes. These moments are not just cute inserts, but real little dramas, comedies, and revelations.

And how could there be no romance? In the village, you can find your soulmate — there are only 12 potential partners: 6 guys and 6 girls, each with their own unique personality. Here are just a few typical types:

• a withdrawn introvert who is hard to trust;
• a cheerful and energetic barmaid, always ready to support;
• a designer living in his own creative world;
• a melancholic loader experiencing an internal crisis;
• a self-confident but vulnerable girl;
• a shy guy hiding a romantic nature.

Each of them is a person with character, and there will surely be someone who will become close to you.

In addition, the game has enough side plots. The revival of the village club, cute quests, funny assignments – all this creates the feeling of a real village living its own life. And no one forces you to go through all this. If you want, become the soul of the village, or if you want, live alone on your farm, in harmony with nature and chickens. Here everyone is free to play the way they like.

Stardew Valley is the perfect game for soul and co-op

The most noticeable thing about Stardew Valley is, of course, its visual style. The game is literally bursting with color: the colors are rich, saturated, and each season has its own atmosphere. In spring and summer, there is a riot of greenery, in autumn everything is painted in warm reddish-gold tones, and winter envelops the village in cold blue and snow-white shades. This is especially felt in contrast to the Joja corporation. While the valley itself greets you with a cozy, lively palette, the Joja offices seem sterile and cold – a true symbol of soulless capitalism.

The audio in the game is also top notch. The main tracks are written in a style close to rural country, and they perfectly convey the mood of the game. Each season and even story scenes have their own melody, which only adds to the immersion. In the dungeons, there is often no music at all – instead, you hear the sounds of dripping water, creaks and squeaks, creating an atmosphere of anxious calm. And most importantly, the soundtrack doesn’t get boring even after dozens of hours of play. It’s like background magic that doesn’t get boring, but on the contrary, becomes something familiar.

Now about the co-op. It was originally planned for release, but it only made it into the game two years later. I didn’t spend too much time in it, but overall, everything works. The main difference from the single-player game is that time doesn’t stop. That is, if in the single-player you start a mini-game or, say, fish, the clock stops. But in the co-op, it doesn’t. Fish, play slot machines – the day goes by. And there’s even less time, and more fuss. On the one hand, this is a minus, but on the other, it’s technically difficult to synchronize time for all players differently.

And a couple more thoughts about the co-op itself. If you plan to play with friends, start from the very beginning, together. My friends and I first went through almost the entire single-player game, and then decided “let’s go to co-op.” And somehow it didn’t work out. Returning to simple tools and a small reserve of energy was not so easy. We were spoiled by the progress from the single-player game, and quickly burned out in the co-op. So if you want to play with someone – better right away.

Overall, Stardew Valley is probably the most cozy and soulful game I have ever played. Almost everything in it is done with soul:

• atmospheric pixel visuals, where each season feels different;
• a captivating soundtrack that doesn’t get boring even after dozens of hours;
• well-developed farming mechanics that give a sense of growth and progress;
• interesting quests and interaction with residents that evokes real emotions;
• the ability to play both alone and in the company of friends.
