Sons of the Forest

Sons of the Forest

It seems that the survival market is already overcrowded: here you have Valheim, Raft, Rust, V Rising, and, of course, the first The Forest. However, the resounding success of Sons of the Forest clearly shows that players are still not satiated with this genre. The new game confidently follows a familiar path, but does not forget about its roots left with The Forest. At the center is a mysterious story with mystical notes, a pinch of horror, battles with creepy forest dwellers, building your own shelter and, of course, risky forays into the thicket in search of resources and adventures.

In Sons of the Forest, we take on the role of an elite special forces soldier who is tasked with a difficult mission – to find and evacuate billionaire Edward Puffton, the owner of the giant corporation Puffton Industries, and his family. They were last seen on a remote island, after which they literally disappeared from the radar. The mission already looks suspicious, but things get really bad when the helicopter with our group unexpectedly crashes while approaching the target. Most of the fighters die or go missing, and only our hero and his comrade named Calvin somehow survive.

Now the real fight for survival begins. All we have is debris, unclear coordinates and a dense, frightening forest full of the unknown. The first task is not only to find surviving comrades, but also to unravel the dark secrets that the island is clearly in no hurry to reveal. Here, danger can hide behind every tree, and silence sometimes sounds louder than any scream.

What is especially impressive is the atmosphere. The island feels hostile from the very beginning and at the same time incredibly intriguing. It beckons you to explore it, look into dark caves, break into mysterious bunkers, stumble upon strange structures and messages left by someone. Everything here reminds you of the once boiling life, but now it is only rust, darkness and oppressive silence. It is not surprising that many compare the game to the Lost series – the feeling that you are in the center of something huge and incomprehensible does not leave until the very end.

The game continues the traditions of the original The Forest, but has noticeably increased in scale, depth and elaboration of the environment. The story develops slowly, in places even confusingly, throwing up more and more new pieces of the mosaic. However, despite a strong beginning and powerful immersion, everything deflates a little by the end. The ending is a bit of a blur, as if it breaks off mid-sentence. A couple of unexpected twists don’t save the situation – they are interesting, but executed a bit awkwardly. It seems as if the authors haven’t yet decided whether they want to tell a coherent story or leave room for the players’ imagination.

However, the plot in Sons of the Forest is only one element. The main thing here is survival, exploration, a constant sense of danger and anxiety. And also – an incredibly atmospheric world that scares not so much with screamers, but with the feeling that you are here all alone … and something is constantly watching you from the shadows.

Is Sons Of The Forest Worth Playing Right Now? A Complete Breakdown

If you’ve ever played survival games — be it The Forest, Rust, or even just Minecraft with mods — then everything in Sons Of The Forest will seem familiar to you, like a good old jacket: you run through the forest, collect sticks and stones, fight for your life, and make yourself a spear from scrap materials. The formula is simple: survive as best you can. Only here everything is presented much more beautifully and cinematically.

It all starts with a crash — and depending on where exactly you find yourself (in the wilderness, on snowy peaks, or on the coastal sand), further survival will feel different. However, where to go and what to do is up to you. If you want, follow the main plot, uncovering the secrets of a mysterious island. Or if you want, just build yourself a house, catch fish, and avoid everything that moves and looks hostile.

Fortunately, you have one true friend at your disposal — a GPS navigator. It shows key points of interest on the map: caches with loot, shelters, supply caches, and even helps you get your bearings when you’ve gotten lost in the monotonous thicket for the third time. Without it, it’s like being without hands. However, walking through the forest here is not as safe as it might seem. The local inhabitants are not particularly friendly. Some are downright aggressive. Especially at first, when your weapons are just an axe and a knife. In such moments, it’s better not to be a hero at all: if you see an unfriendly tribe, run away. If you’re really desperate, you can quickly craft a spear or at least a bow. With them, you already feel a little more confident, especially when you know how to keep your distance.

But the most interesting finds are, of course, weapons. The game generously scatters serious toys around the island, and over time you can collect a pretty decent arsenal. Here’s just a fraction of what you can find:

  • Pistol – the basic firearm for the first time;
  • Revolver – powerful and reliable, especially at close range;
  • Shotgun – great for dealing with groups of enemies in tight spaces;
  • Crossbow – accurate and silent, ideal for stealth raids;
  • Katana – fast and deadly in close combat, especially effective against single targets.

With such a set, you are no longer a prey, but a real hunter.

However, fighting is only part of survival. You will have to cope with hunger, thirst and fatigue. Sometimes, fighting these simple needs is even more exciting than scuffles with mutants. Food can come in the form of a bar from a suitcase, instant noodles or freshly picked berries. You can drink water from lakes and rivers – although it would be better to check in advance if there is anything suspicious in it. And you can sleep anywhere: in a tent, on an old mattress in an abandoned laboratory or in a makeshift bed made of sticks and rags. It all depends on how lazy you are and how far you have wandered.

Over time, especially after a couple of hours of anxious escapes and dangerous forays, you begin to think: maybe this quest with the missing boss of the corporation is over? You just want to build yourself a hut by the lake, cast a fishing rod and forget about all these creepy subways. The game only encourages such initiative: building materials are literally lying under your feet, and a convenient construction book tells you how and what you can build. You can build a cozy tree house, a fortress with a fence, or even a real base – if you want to. Local crafting and construction, frankly speaking, is one of the most comfortable that I have seen in the genre. Although there is an opinion that the game has become too “friendly” to beginners because of this. But, as for me, it is better this way than dancing with a tambourine in order to build a simple roof. Alas, there was a fly in the ointment. The AI, both for enemies and allies, sometimes pulls out some downright weird tricks: enemies can suddenly get stuck in textures, and friendly NPCs can simply stop responding to commands. The technical state also leaves much to be desired: frequent bugs, freezes, long loading times, and not always stable FPS spoil the impression, especially on weak or average systems. The plot seems unfinished for now, and the ending feels completely crumpled, as if the developers did not have time to finish it properly.

So Sons Of The Forest is like a house without a roof right now: the potential is huge, but in some places it feels like it is still under construction. If you want to get the most complete experience, it might be worth waiting for a couple of major patches or wait for the full release, which, according to rumors, should happen in 6-8 months. But if you are not afraid of bugs and raw content, the game can already give you dozens of hours of intense but exciting survival.
