Sonic X Shadow Generations Review

Let’s dive right in: Sonic X Shadow Generations is an impressive blend of classic Sonic gameplay and innovative Shadow levels that highlight his unique abilities. After some time with the game, it has quickly become one of my all-time favorites in the Sonic series. Sega and Sonic Team have taken lessons from their recent titles, Frontiers and Superstars, skillfully integrating some of their best ideas into a refreshing take on a beloved classic. When it comes to Shadow the Hedgehog, this title truly defines his legacy.

About half of Sonic X Shadow Generations features remastered content from the 2011 game, Sonic Generations, which previously earned an 8.5 in our review. While the level designs remain largely unchanged, they hold up remarkably well. The addition of charming Chao hidden throughout both 2D and 3D stages adds a delightful touch; I can only hope this hints at the return of the Chao Garden from Sonic Adventure 2 in a future installment.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Review

For those who missed the original, this is an excellent opportunity to experience it anew. Sonic Generations masterfully combines 2D and 3D gameplay, celebrating 20 years of Sonic history by recreating some of the franchise’s most iconic levels. Shadow Generations quickly impresses with its creativity, particularly in its opening stage, which transforms into stunning fractals reminiscent of the alternate dimensions seen in Doctor Strange or Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The levels from Sonic Generations also receive a subtle yet noticeable graphical enhancement, thanks to the capabilities of current-generation consoles. The environments appear more polished, and the colors are more vibrant, making enemies, hazards, and springs easier to spot as you speed through the levels. While the improvements may not be drastic, this is undoubtedly the best way to enjoy the game.

Sonic X Shadow Generations: A Unique Experience

The main highlight of Sonic X Shadow Generations is its brand-new campaign, which creatively reimagines Shadow’s stages from previous Sonic games. This five-hour adventure runs alongside the Generations storyline but offers a unique twist. Each level features both 2D and 3D segments, keeping the fast-paced excitement you’d expect from a Sonic game. Just as Sonic unlocks new paths with abilities like the light dash, Shadow starts with his own skill called the Chaos Dash, which opens up even more routes as he gains new abilities like the Doom Wings, allowing him to glide short distances and skip sections of levels.

Shadow’s Chaos Control ability leads to some really exciting moments, like when he freezes time to intercept an incoming missile in a flashy mini cutscene. Unlike the classic 2D Sonic stages, which lack a homing attack or boost gauge, Shadow keeps all his abilities intact, making his 2D segments feel just as thrilling as the 3D ones.

Sonic X Shadow Generations An Engaging Experience

  • New Campaign: Reimagines Shadow’s stages from past Sonic games.
  • Mix of 2D and 3D: Each level features both styles, keeping gameplay exciting.
  • Unique Abilities: Shadow uses Chaos Dash and Doom Wings to navigate levels.
  • Exciting Challenges: Complete specific tasks to earn keys for progression.
  • Focused Storyline: Shadow’s journey allows him to concentrate on his own adventure, separate from Sonic’s quest for Chaos Emeralds.

In addition to the main levels, you’ll find various challenge stages with fun objectives. For example, you might need to take out a certain number of targets before reaching the finish line or complete a tricky level while holding onto just one ring. This setup is similar to Sonic Generations, but the key difference is that you’ll need to complete all the challenges to earn the keys required to advance. While I do miss the excitement of collecting Chaos Emeralds—which included fun rival battles with characters like Metal Sonic and Silver—this makes sense since Sonic is collecting them in his own part of the story, allowing Shadow to focus on his unique journey.

Sonic X Shadow Generations: An Engaging Experience

When you put both campaigns together, you’ll find yourself navigating over 150 stages, including traditional levels, challenges, and boss fights. Even the most devoted Sonic fans will likely spend around 15 to 20 hours diving into all this content. If you’re up for an extra challenge, finishing the Shadow campaign opens up a new option that makes bosses and challenge levels tougher when you replay them. The new storylines, though not extensive, cleverly link Shadow’s past appearances, touching on memorable moments from earlier games, such as the epic showdown between Sonic and Shadow in Sonic Adventure 2. You’ll also encounter fresh scenes that explore Shadow’s backstory, reuniting him with friends and foes and adding more context to his narratives from games like Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Adventure 2. These moments are engaging and exciting, always leaving me wanting to see more.

Sonic X Shadow Generations A Unique Experience

Shadow’s campaign, like Sonic’s, features fun reimaginings of some of his classic stages. You’ll get to experience updated versions of levels like Radical Highway, Rail Canyon, and the Space Colony Ark, each packed with creative routes that highlight Shadow’s mix of old and new abilities. He starts with his iconic Chaos Control ability, which can freeze time (including the stage timer), letting you dodge hazards like a runaway train or stop groups of enemies in their tracks. Plus, the new Chaos Dash helps you find clever shortcuts.

As you progress, you’ll unlock Doom abilities that give you fresh options for movement and combat. One of my favorites, which you get partway through his story, is Doom Surf. This ability makes water levels a blast, allowing you to ride a shadowy manta ray that can spin-attack through enemies and obstacles. These powers are introduced at a nice pace after completing groups of stages or defeating area bosses, keeping the gameplay exciting and varied throughout.

Doom Surf Makes Water Levels a Blast

The boss fights in Sonic X Shadow Generations also feature some fun and inventive twists. One standout is a metallic dragon that you chase across the water, dodging obstacles and hurling debris at him. Once you charge up enough energy, you can unleash Chaos Control for some serious damage with a homing attack. I wish there were more encounters like this, but the ones included really showcase the latest Doom abilities, adding a great layer to the lineup of classic egg robots and other iconic villains from Sonic’s history.

However, there was one stage that threw me off my rhythm and reminded me of the bumps in modern Sonic games: the 3D stage from Sonic Frontiers. It felt a bit hollow compared to the rest of Sonic X Shadow Generations and leaned too heavily on a new sludge-based upgrade for Shadow, which reminded me of one of my least favorite Wisp powers from Sonic Colors. Aside from that, I thoroughly enjoyed revisiting each stage to discover the best paths, collect keys for unlocking secrets in the hub world, and refine my runs until I achieved those coveted S-rankings.

Speaking of the hub world, Sonic X Shadow Generations takes the all-white environment of Sonic Generations and transforms it from a flat 2D plane into a vibrant, three-dimensional space that expands as you complete sections and their corresponding bosses. I loved spending time between stages exploring the hub, opening chests with the keys I gathered, and tackling optional activities like collecting 100 rings in a time limit for rewards such as artwork, music, and character lore about Shadow’s journey.

  1. Inventive Boss Fights: Features creative encounters, such as chasing a metallic dragon on water.
  2. Doom Abilities: Boss fights showcase Shadow’s latest abilities, enhancing classic villains.
  3. Mixed Stages: One 3D stage from Sonic Frontiers feels hollow and disrupts momentum.
  4. Expanded Hub World: Transforms the flat environment into a vibrant 3D space that grows as you progress.
  5. Exploration Rewards: Players can gather keys to open chests and earn rewards like artwork and character lore.
  6. Classic 2D Stages: Shadow has multiple 2D levels, utilizing his expanded move set effectively.
  7. Eliminated Frustrations: Abilities like Doom Surf allow players to glide over water, avoiding typical underwater challenges.
  8. Great Soundtrack: Iconic tracks return alongside the option to select background music for stages, enhancing the experience.

Similar to Sonic, Shadow has stages that stick to the classic 2D perspective, and they feel perfectly suited for his high-speed adventures. Aside from a McDonald’s toy called the Shadow Grinder from 2003 and a DLC stage in Sonic Forces: Episode Shadow, this is the first time we’ve seen multiple full 2D levels for Shadow. It was exciting to see how his expanded move set influenced their design. For instance, abilities like Chaos Spears let me hit switches from afar to unlock alternative routes, while Doom Surf eliminates the frustrating underwater sections typical in Sonic games. Now, you can glide right over the water until you reach dry land.

Lastly, I have to mention the fantastic music that accompanies our favorite hedgehogs as they race to the finish line. The iconic guitar riffs from stages like Radical Highway and Space Colony Ark make a return, along with impressive tracks like Crush 40’s “All Hail Shadow” and the theme from Sonic Heroes: Rail Canyon. One of my favorite features of the Generations games is the option to choose the background music for each stage and challenge. If you want to listen to “Live & Learn” on repeat like the Crush 40 fan you are, you can! The only catch is that you have to find some tracks hidden in chests around Shadow’s hub world or by collecting musical notes and red rings in Sonic’s stages to unlock them. But honestly, that’s a trade-off I’m more than happy to make!
