Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3

Sniper Ghost Warrior 3

The first part of Sniper: Ghost Warrior, released in 2010, had its shortcomings, but, contrary to expectations, sold two million copies. The game received recognition mainly due to its varied gameplay and atmospheric locations that successfully immersed players in the gameplay. Warsaw-based City Interactive, which later changed its name to CI Games, decided not to miss the chance to build on the franchise’s success. However, the sequel, released in 2013, was unsuccessful – neither critics nor the gaming community appreciated it, which caused a wave of disappointment. The development of the third part, conceived as the first big-budget project in the series, was accompanied by numerous difficulties. Initially presented at E3 2015 as a stealth action game in an open world, the game was repeatedly postponed, causing both anticipation and irritation among fans.

The plot begins with a classic introduction familiar to fans of military shooters: an American Marine goes on a peacekeeping mission to an unfamiliar country. His task is to prevent the outbreak of a civil war, eliminate the terrorist threat and stop the illegal arms trade. At the same time, he also has a personal goal – to free his brother, who is being held captive by local militants. What really sets this game apart from other representatives of the genre is the original choice of location. Contrary to the usual “hot spots” such as fictional republics or Middle Eastern deserts, the Polish developers have bet on Georgia. This choice turned out to be successful: the best atmosphere of the region gives the story a special flavor and helps the project stand out. Georgian landscapes – from harsh mountains to urban areas with a Soviet touch – are full of references to the history and culture of the country. Surprisingly accurately reproduced shrines, mountain monasteries and frescoes immerse you in a world that feels real. These visual details are not just a background, but part of the narrative, and at times they evoke associations with Assassin’s Creed, while the player can observe architecture or beautiful frescoes.

A brilliant inventor of scams

From the first minutes, the player is overcome by a feeling of familiarity, as if he has returned to a long-abandoned, but painfully familiar world. Emotions are created that the developers have thoroughly analyzed the gaming trends of recent years in an attempt to reveal the formula of the ideal project. They generously borrowed ideas from popular hits, combining them into a predictable, albeit harmonious mosaic. The core of the gameplay refers to Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 – the same mechanics of stealth passage from the first person, a system of pumping up the character and arsenal, as well as a bright open world, dotted with outposts, additional tasks and secondary activities. The plot, alas, suffers from secondary nature and a lack of original ideas. The creators wanted to captivate gamers with an emotional attachment to the heroes, charismatic antagonists and unexpected turns, but the final result leaves much to be desired. The characters remain flat and fail to evoke much resonance, and the villains lack the layering that turns a mundane foe into a true legend.

Back in 2017, CI Games was diligently crafting remarkable female characters that stood out in the gaming landscape. The protagonist’s drone bore an uncanny resemblance to the one from Ghost Recon: Wildlands, which was a bit too familiar. The “Recon Mode,” designed to highlight enemy tracks, resources, and items available for interaction, had already made its mark in The Witcher 3, showcasing a trend in game mechanics. The stunning slow-motion headshot animations, while reminiscent of Sniper Elite, notably lacked the dramatic X-ray effect that added flair to those moments. One could go on about these similarities…

Ultimately, it’s not all that bad! If CI Games had fully embraced their “cosplay” concept, assembling a spherical action game with an open world that felt cohesive, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 could have emerged as a genuinely great title. It may come off as somewhat generic, yet it remains polished and enjoyable for players who appreciate craftsmanship in gameplay. Unfortunately, the various flaws detract significantly from the overall experience. The thought of Far Cry only fades during those instances when the game decides to switch gears to Splinter Cell, compelling players to crawl through vents, which feels like a diversion rather than an enhancement. This inconsistency leaves players yearning for a more cohesive experience throughout their journey.

Mismatch between concept and implementation

It might have been wise for the developers to consider delaying the release for an additional six months to effectively address the myriad minor issues that detract from the overall enjoyment of what could otherwise be a truly great game. In many of the recorded cutscenes, the voice acting is noticeably out of sync with the characters’ lip movements, creating a jarring experience for players. Additionally, subtitles sometimes vanish unexpectedly, and the lengthy loading times have frustrated players to such an extent that they have become a meme even before the game officially launched. CI Games excelled in creating visually stunning graphics, pushing the CryEngine to its limits to deliver “living” textures, enchanting fog effects, and soft, diffused light spilling from lanterns. The sticky blood trails and glistening rain-soaked pavement add to the immersive atmosphere. While it’s a pleasure to behold, this visual beauty comes with the significant drawback of frequent stuttering and lag, regardless of how low you set the graphics settings. The game has the annoying tendency to freeze for ten seconds due to almost anything—be it a sudden movement, a gunshot, or even just the act of opening that frustrating “Skills” menu.

It took me four attempts to finally reach this screen. Before that, the game would crash consistently right before the mission concluded. There are also several critiques regarding the open world. While many other sandbox games are often criticized for their dullness and emptiness, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 seems to invite criticism for its overwhelming variety and underlying hollowness. The map is filled with so many stunning and intricately designed locations that it becomes a challenge to find anything that feels unremarkable. Each of the countless outposts captures attention for different reasons: whether it’s a quaint church, a rustic hotel, a traditional distillery, or a Soviet “Mining and Processing Plant.”

Yet, amidst all this breathtaking Georgian scenery, there’s almost nothing meaningful to engage with aside from liberating those outposts and rescuing prisoners. The sandbox world is largely devoid of ordinary people, and hunting wildlife feels futile. Many of the impressive structures turn out to be mere facades where no doors open—just empty shells. The occasional quirky moments scattered throughout the map do offer some lighthearted amusement. You might wander into a forest cabin only to unexpectedly stumble upon something bizarre or comical. Then, just moments later, the unsettling sound of a chainsaw echoes from outside… It creates a strange mix of emotions, making you want to applaud the designer for their creativity while simultaneously feeling an urge to flee in terror.

Failed Prospects

Given everything discussed, it’s hard to label Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 as a bad game. It’s certainly rough, unfinished, and somewhat lacking in depth, but it’s not truly bad. The potential is glaringly obvious: the atmosphere is immersive, the vivid details bring the environment to life, and the open world, while flawed, offers moments of exploration. The straightforward yet enjoyable sniper mechanics shine through, making you want to embrace the experience fully. However, frustrating crashes, noticeable lag, and repetitive missions often hold you back from fully enjoying what the game has to offer. The shooting range is controlled by a gauge that requires you to manually sync with the scope elevation, which adds a layer of challenge, while adjustments for wind are indicated by a red line, making it feel grounded in realism.

Additionally, the sound design of the game deserves recognition and enhances the overall experience. Each mission features pleasant and subtle instrumental backgrounds that complement the gameplay without being intrusive. Furthermore, a surprisingly catchy Georgian song from the main menu lingers in your mind long after you’ve exited the game. It’s easy to see why, as the music was crafted by the talented Mikolaj Stroinski, renowned for his exceptional work on the soundtrack for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

CI Games didn’t stop there, pushing boundaries even further. It’s quite surprising, but authentic Russian rap blares from every radio in Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3. Whether it’s at a bustling sawmill, a lively wedding, or a secure military site, it really doesn’t matter where you are. When the wind first carries the protagonist verses about destiny, adversaries, family, love, and cash (the lyrics span a wide range from gritty criminal themes to deep philosophical reflections), it certainly triggers a mild cultural shock. It’s amusing, of course, how the developers have so boldly defined the musical tastes of the entire Georgian populace, yet this choice undeniably makes the game world feel more vibrant and alive—just like the enemy lines, such as “Search the perimeter!” delivered with a deliberately thick Russian accent.

There’s no shortage of clichés throughout the game, but the opportunity to explore the intricate details of the environment remains captivating and engaging for players.

When it comes to multiplayer, it’s important to note that it won’t be part of the initial release, and it’s not anticipated until at least the third quarter of 2017. The developers have expressed their desire for players to first “immerse themselves in the single-player campaign.” Over time, this campaign is expected to be enriched with downloadable content (DLC), which might finally introduce more missions to the sandbox environment. Meanwhile, the multiplayer mode—offered free to all game owners—appears to be intended as the cherry on top of the experience. We can only wish CI Games the best of luck and hope that, by the time it arrives, players will still have Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 fresh in their minds.
