In the eight years of their existence, they have managed to become famous only for a stream of mediocre, and sometimes frankly weak, military-themed shooters. So expecting a sudden breakthrough from them is like hoping to hit the target while shooting with your eyes closed.

Even a person who is far from the world of video games, but has heard something about military affairs – say, from films or books – will immediately imagine a very specific image upon hearing the word “sniper”. This is not just a man with a rifle. This is a silent professional, dissolved in the shadows, possessing superhuman endurance and the ability to cause panic in the enemy camp with one shot. He always remains in the shadows, chooses the moment and hits the target at a distance, where others can hardly distinguish the silhouette at all. And if we are talking about a sniper simulator, then logically it should be the same – restrained, thoughtful, requiring patience, attentiveness and a strategic approach from the player. Without the ability to improvise, without the freedom to choose the route and methods – there simply can’t be any atmosphere.

That’s why Crysis is often cited as an example. It is not a pure sniper simulator, but its sandbox gameplay with multiple approaches to each task perfectly fits the concept of a stealthy fighter. If you want, crawl through the bushes, if you want, climb to the heights, if you want, try to slip past the enemies unnoticed. This approach not only makes the gameplay interesting, it allows the player to feel like a sniper, not a participant in a shooting gallery on rails.

However, City Interactive apparently decided that all this was too complicated and time-consuming. Why bother with an open world, realistic enemy behavior, complex AI, camouflage systems, and wind that affects the trajectory of a bullet? Everything could be simplified: make narrow corridor levels in the jungle, where the grass is more for decoration than for cover, and give the player a rifle with a scope – already a kind of simulator. And then – strictly along the route, a step to the left or right is not welcome. It turns out to be something like “hiking with a rifle along a tourist trail”, only with periodic stops to “shoot at targets”.

On paper, the concept is quite workable. In the end, linear shooters can be exciting too. But the key word here is “can.” For such a format to really work, it’s not just about making it beautiful and technically passable. It needs style, it needs taste, it needs drama, interesting scenarios, work on the atmosphere. And it’s also desirable that the project be backed by a team with experience, resources, and vision. Ideally, like Infinity Ward or at least a studio that knows how to forge memorable game design.

If the developers don’t have any of these components, then the result will not be a sniper fantasy, but a dull shooting gallery in the bushes, where the “simulator” is limited to the presence of a sniper rifle. And then it’s better not to try to pass it off as something profound — because players will feel the falseness in any case. And when a game about a sniper gives neither freedom, nor tension, nor tactical depth — it’s not even a miss, it’s a shot in the foot.

It seems that the Polish developers are not used to giving up. Neither technical limitations nor the obvious lag behind modern gaming standards can break their spirit. Like shoemakers armed with a soldering iron and inspiration, they get down to business – and produce a project that, perhaps, would have made an impression… if it had come out six years ago. Or ten. Who’s counting? At the start, everything looks quite encouraging. Sniper: Ghost Warrior tries to look serious – from the first minutes we are handed a rifle, put next to a gloomy instructor and sent to an improvised boot camp. The tutorial, to its credit, is designed with imagination: we learn to shoot with an adjustment for the wind, study the trajectories of bullets, throw grenades at dummies and, what is especially touching, play hide and seek with other cadets – in the name of the art of camouflage. At this point, you can still believe that there is a solid sniper simulator ahead with an emphasis on realism and tactics.

But alas, reality makes itself felt already on the first loading screen. The scriptwriters start from afar, confidently spinning a story about political conflicts, coups and secret operations. True, behind all this tinsel there is a plot that is more suitable for a school play: a certain evil general named Vesquez seized power on the fictional island of Isla Trueno and found uranium deposits there. The United States, naturally, cannot stay on the sidelines and sends a special squad to the conflict zone. The main character is tasked with eliminating the dictator – carefully, quietly and without noise. What happens next? Of course, everything does not go according to plan. The bullet only wounds the target, the camouflage fails, and a standard shooter run through the jungle and villages begins, with screams, explosions and senseless shooting. The picture seems to scream: “We wanted it like Modern Warfare!”, but it turned out like a low-quality TV series.

Ghost Warrior Is Disappointing - Gameplay

The gameplay evokes the feeling of time travel – but not in a good way. As if you opened a dusty box with a forgotten disc from 2006. All the missions are made according to the old-school templates: linear routes, template tasks, a complete lack of freedom. Here you are sneaking through the bushes, here you are shooting at cardboard enemies, here you are blowing up another fuel tank. Everything seems to be as it should be, but there is no soul.

But there was potential! The sniper mechanics could have saved the game, but here it feels as outdated as a VHS tape. All the player’s actions are strictly regulated: a shot in the wrong place – alarm, a step to the side – failure, the desire to experiment – is canceled by the artificial intelligence of the enemies, which in terms of intelligence is not far from decorative bushes. Enemies walk strictly along the route, do not notice how their comrades fall nearby, do not know how to hide, and at the same time have mystical vision that allows them to see a sniper in tall grass hundreds of meters away. The levels are designed according to the principle of “as simple as possible”: linear corridors, boring locations, a standard set of objects for explosions and shelters. The game does not offer a choice, does not provoke thought – only obediently following the instructions. Want to show initiative? Please, but be prepared to load the last save.

The technical state of the project finally kills off any rudiments of immersion. On the screenshots, the game looks decent, but as soon as everything starts moving, the illusion crumbles. Poor animation, explosions from the arsenal of a bygone era, textures that seem to have been forgotten back in the alpha stage. Bugs occur with such regularity that sometimes it seems like this is not a bug, but a feature. One of the “hits” is an enemy shooting into nowhere, whose bullets somehow hit the hero directly. And this is not a one-time joke – it is repeated. Again and again. Against this background, even the chickens randomly running across the screen look much more alive and evoke more emotions than all the antagonists put together.

It would be possible to write it all off on the limited budget and modest resources of the studio, but the problem is not only in finances. The main problem of Sniper: Ghost Warrior is the complete lack of ambition. This is a game that does not seem to want to be better. It just exists: routinely, template, mechanically. As if it was assembled automatically, according to old patterns, without an attempt to rethink something, add a twist or, at least, try not to get boring already on the second level.

As a result, Sniper: Ghost Warrior is not just a run-of-the-mill shooter. It’s the epitome of missed opportunity, a game that could have been the start of something interesting but has become a tired shadow of the genre. You can play it out of curiosity, laugh at the bugs, reminisce about the times when games were simpler – but you’re unlikely to want to play it to the end. Unless you feel a sense of professional duty. Or if every other game on the planet suddenly disappeared.

What’s most striking about this story is not even the quality of the games themselves – you get used to it somehow – but the fact that someone needs them at all. These projects seem to be stuck somewhere in the early 2000s, but despite this, they continue to find their audience. Apparently, every product, no matter what it is, has its own audience. How else to explain that the City Interactive studio not only survived the global financial crisis, but also still exists, from time to time releasing something that can be called games with a stretch? It seems that they have a special mission there – to remind us how not to make games. Or maybe this is a peculiar form of gamedev karma – while technical masterpieces appear in the industry, somewhere the opposite pole must exist to maintain balance. Someone cooks up craft worlds, and someone churns out templates, not really thinking about quality – and for some reason the world accepts both.

Well, maybe very lenient system requirements – these games will handle even old laptops. In places, the graphics are pleasing to the eye, if you don’t look too closely. Sometimes you even get something resembling an atmosphere – quickly disappearing, but still.

But the list of pain points is much more impressive:

  • Gameplay that can put even a hyperactive teenager to sleep – it is so faceless and boring.
  • Completely linear: step left, step right – reboot. Everything is strictly according to the scripts, no freedom.
  • Plot? It seems to be there, but it does not evoke any emotions – as if you were retelling the plot of a bad action movie to someone that you yourself have not really watched.
  • The levels are monotonous and do not inspire the desire to explore them. The design seems to have been put together on the knee.
  • Plagiarism of other people’s ideas – without shame, but also without talent: borrowings are instantly recognizable, and the implementation is lame on both legs.
  • There are more than enough bugs. Some of them are even funny – but only the first couple of times.
  • And finally, the most ironic detail – despite the declared sniper theme, sniping itself feels like an unsuccessful aftertaste: superficial, unconvincing and soulless.

Overall, it feels like City Interactive’s games exist by some sort of alternative law of physics – where quality doesn’t necessarily affect survivability. But even that probably makes them special – albeit in their own way.
