Alex is lying on a gurney, either in a coma or simply out of touch with reality. His hands are tied, and a silent surgeon is breathing heavily over him. There’s no doubt about it – this is a hospital, and there’s no way to guess. We’re driving down the corridor past the wards, and our gaze catches terrifying scenes: strange, frightening figures are doing something to patients – still alive or not quite. It seems like they’re hinting to Alex that he’s next.
The surgeon suddenly disappears behind the door, and screams are heard from there. Unpleasant. But in a way, it’s even nice – it becomes clear: the developers know how to scare. Real, old school – like in the old days of Silent Hill: half the doors are closed, and those that are open are even more frightening. It seems like you’re in a quiet room, everything is calm, but somewhere behind the wall there are rustles. And you don’t know: does this door connect your “safety” with something disgusting on the other side?
It’s only after half an hour that you’ll begin to truly understand what you’re dealing with. The game will change its face over and over again. At first, it will seem like a raw, glitchy misunderstanding. Then, it will give you a scene that would be worthy of an Oscar. And all of this is Silent Hill as fans remember it: scary, unpredictable, and a little crazy.

How the atmosphere and controls have changed in the new Silent Hill
Now everything works much smoother: the main character calmly reacts to mouse movements – you can look up, down, around. The camera is usually located behind the character. But as soon as a brawl begins, he immediately automatically focuses on the nearest enemy and with obvious enthusiasm prepares to hit him with something heavy and sharp. In general, everything is the same – only now the camera has become more obedient.
But the changes in control are felt much more strongly. Along with the previous “lazy” character, the combat system itself, and the atmosphere of the game, and even the way everything is perceived have changed. Now you can just run in circles around the rooms and halls from monsters, without much fear of getting hit in the neck. The previous feeling of a hopeless nightmare has been replaced by something like going to the toilet at night after a scary movie – it’s still disturbing, but no longer to the point of panic, especially if the light is on. And you know, this is not a minus at all – quite the opposite.
The series has finally emerged from the vicious circle of self-repetitions. She still remembers her roots – and carefully preserves what makes her recognizable:
- a distinctive font and a dark interface,
- a flashlight that illuminates only a tiny area in front of your nose,
- a radio that crackles alarmingly when enemies approach,
- and an inventory that allows you to pause everything and catch your breath.
But everything else is fresh, and as far as the in-game world allows, it looks really decent.
Interestingly, the Silent Hill movie played a major role in this update. Although not everyone liked it – many thought it deviated too much from the canon – it was the one that breathed new life into the image of the world. The classic transition to a nightmare with the howl of a siren, creepy nurses with the movements of mannequins from a film set, and even the plot itself – everything received a new visual language and became a little different. In a good way.
Challenges at Every Step: Combat, Puzzles, and Strange Decisions in Silent Hill Homecoming
It’s just a shame that the developers, to put it mildly, didn’t finish some things. This is especially noticeable in the combat system – it looks more like a chaotic farce. Imagine: you’re walking down a narrow corridor, and suddenly a nurse flies out at you. But not just with bandages – it’s as if she’s taken a course in hand-to-hand combat: she’ll swing a knife, then pull off a combo, then try to stick the blade where it shouldn’t. The creators, apparently, expected that the player would deftly dodge her attacks, but in reality – there’s nowhere to really turn around, and the main character seems to suffer from bouts of disobedience. You tell him: “go left” – and for some reason he darts back and immediately catches a blow. To the right – a similar story. And the nurse is already in a battle ecstasy, waving so that you can’t get close. All that’s left is to watch the health bar melt and wait for rebirth at the local checkpoint – a pentagram. By the way, you can’t save at every corner here either.
Riddles, which used to be distinguished by schizophrenic, but quite logical madness, have given way to puzzles and tasks borrowed from Resident Evil 4, which are both original and… tedious. For example, you need to fix the elevator. It sounds simple: the power is off, the transformer is burnt out – you just need to fix the wires. Easy? Not really. With two mouse buttons, manipulations turn into a real survival quest.
These flaws are, of course, noticeable, but they do not spoil the whole impression. The rest of the time, the game is truly captivating: dialogues with characters, cutscenes, exploration of a gloomy but atmospheric city – this is where the project really opens up. And this is where the real applause begins.
A New Look at an Old Nightmare: Is Homecoming Worth Playing?
To say that Silent Hill: Homecoming looks cinematic is to say nothing. There are few characters, but each of them seems to come alive on the screen. They don’t just say lines — they live each scene. They frown at the right time, cast an anxious glance over their shoulder, or freeze, recognizing a familiar figure in the dark. And all this — with voices that perfectly match the mood of the moment.
Yes, the series has always been able to make atmospheric cutscenes, but Homecoming is no longer just a “game with cutscenes”. It’s almost a real movie with digital actors. Sometimes it seems that more effort was put into staging a single frame here than in some films.
A special word — about the music. The soundtrack remained true to the spirit of the series, and it works 100%. The music doesn’t just accompany what’s happening, it directs emotions. You hear a familiar disturbing melody — and you already know: it’s getting hot in the police station, it’s time to leave. Or here’s another moment – rush, panic, you have to save the main character’s girlfriend, and the music seems to drive you from within.
Of course, this is not the same Silent Hill as fans remember it. Another studio is at the wheel, and the audience is tired of repetitions. Fan service can be seen somewhere, but overall, this is an attempt to turn off the beaten path and find a new direction. A bold attempt. Did it work? Time and the next parts will tell. For now, Silent Hill: Homecoming is a worthy game that rejects old templates and tries to speak a new language.
