There is no need to even talk about the plot of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl – everyone who has ever heard of this cult game knows it. However, stalkers are not the only inhabitants of the Zone. They are opposed by bandits who also dream of snatching their share, only they act more simply – they take the prey from others. Above all this chaos, the military hover, trying to take control of the situation. But the most unpredictable force is the Zone itself, filled with predatory creatures mutated by radiation.

A plot that you can’t tear yourself away from

The plot of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of the game’s main trump cards. It surprises with its multi-layered nature: instead of a banal linear narrative, we have a real tangle of intertwined stories. The main character, Marked, wakes up with his memory damaged and the only goal – to find a certain Strelok. Who is he? Why do we need to find him? There are no answers, but the road ahead is already outlined.

What makes the plot so exciting?

• Multilayered – several parallel plot lines that intersect in unexpected places.
• Freedom of choice – the player’s decisions affect the ending, and there are seven of them in the game.
• Unpredictability – it is impossible to understand in advance what awaits around the next corner.

At first, everything seems simple – the hero takes on simple tasks from a local merchant, but gradually the events gain momentum. Ordinary tasks quickly develop into a real adventure, and the choices made during the game determine one of seven possible endings.

The pace of the narrative is another plus. The story develops dynamically, not allowing you to relax. The authors are not afraid of unexpected turns, and sometimes it is difficult to predict. In terms of gameplay, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is first and foremost a shooter, not an RPG. There is no deep character development or branching dialogues, but the shooting is top-notch. The battles are intense, complex, the enemies are smart and know how to coordinate their actions. The main problem for the player is fragility. Ammunition is limited, first aid kits are worth their weight in gold, and your stamina is constantly trying to leave you without strength at the most inopportune moment. Enemies are rarely encountered alone, and killing them can be difficult – the artificial intelligence here is not just “meat to shoot”, but a serious opponent. Fortunately, allies help in some missions, but when you are left alone, the chances of survival melt away with every shot.

The developers did a great job of creating a frightening atmosphere. The zone literally breathes danger: creepy anomalies, mutants, abandoned locations with an alarming silence. At certain moments, the game turns into a real horror, especially when you have to go down into underground laboratories. There, the darkness thickens, the sounds become frighteningly realistic, and an encounter with another monster can send your heart into your heels. Visually, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks decent, but does not revolutionize graphics. The engine may be a bit old, but thanks to the work of artists and designers, the game looks atmospheric and lively. In addition, it is perfectly optimized – even on weak PCs you can enjoy the game without lags.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is not just a game, but a whole universe that is easy to immerse yourself in. An intense plot, a living world, complex shootouts and a unique atmosphere make it one of the best in its genre. The Zone does not forgive mistakes, but this is what makes the passage truly exciting.
