S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 Heart of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl largely follows the fate of the first game. Both projects were postponed more than once, for which the series has long been nicknamed “wait-alker”. Both faced technical problems at the start (details – further in the text). And, of course, like “Shadow of Chernobyl”, the sequel immerses you in a unique, dense atmosphere. For Western gamers – exotic, for players from the countries of the former USSR – native landscapes and surroundings that give you goosebumps. In addition, “Heart of Chernobyl” follows in the footsteps of the original both in terms of narrative and in terms of game design. Moreover, so carefully that the game feels more like a continuation of the ideas of the first parts than a full-fledged breakthrough. There are few innovations, mostly they concern the convenience of the gameplay, but in general the project offers everything the same as before. Although it’s still difficult to call it “comfortable”…

From the very first minutes, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl makes it clear that there is no hospitality here. The atmosphere itself, the gloomy surroundings and the presentation of the story literally put pressure on the player, immersing him in a cruel and merciless world. The main character, Skif, enters the Zone to find out the nature of the artifact that destroyed his home far beyond its borders. But he barely has time to set foot on the radioactive ground before he is immediately drawn into a whirlpool of intrigue, showdowns, betrayals and difficult moral decisions. There is no place for innocence in the Zone: in less than a couple of hours, Skif’s hands will be covered in blood, and the ideas of good and evil will dissolve in the gray shades of this world. Here, the one who pulls the trigger first survives.

The main story, as in previous parts of the series, remains more of a tool for immersing yourself in the atmosphere than a dramatic masterpiece. However, this style of storytelling fits perfectly into the harsh reality of the Zone. On the way to his goal, Skif will cross paths with a variety of characters: bandits, military men, scientists, “suits”, fanatics and pragmatists – each of them has their own truth, for which they are ready to kill. And the situation in the Zone is heating up: former monolithists are experiencing a split, the military is trying to take control of too much, criminal groups are thirsty for dominance, and an experiment is brewing in secret laboratories that can change the fate of humanity. The story is presented through vivid dialogues written in the signature, lively style of the series, as well as through excellently staged first-person scenes. But the player will not only have to observe the events, but also make important decisions: who to join, who to spare, and who to send to the grave. All this will affect both the balance of power in the Zone and the ending of the story, making each playthrough unique.

Small quests, big stories: what makes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 so enjoyable?

The main storyline is laid out as a wide highway, but along the way there are also secondary paths – local stories, where there are slightly fewer moral dilemmas, but there are more than enough similar tasks in the spirit of “kill-bring-kill”. However, even among them there are really interesting mini-plots.

For example, I was especially amused by the task in which local regulars of drinking establishments ask Skif to plant bottles of “Cossacks” vodka in the equipment of three stalkers. According to their logic, this should help with radiation – well, why not? The task is simple, and everything goes smoothly until you run into one of the recipients of the “gift”. It turns out that he decided to quit drinking, realizing that the years of endless feasts flew past him. Now the choice is ours: convince him to take the “last sip” or support the desire for a new life, offering alternative ways to combat radiation.

Here’s another typical plot: Skif is sent to a meeting for another “business”, but bandits are already waiting for him at the place. The situation is classic – your money or your life. Then everything depends on us:

  • You can give the money and hope that the bandits will keep their word.
  • Try to deal with them and then ask a couple of questions to the customer.
  • Make a deal with another victim of this trap and destroy the gang wisely.

A simple task unexpectedly turns into a multi-variant outcome, where the finale depends on our decisions.

Will you survive or break? S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 does not forgive mistakes

The world of Heart of Chornobyl is not just harsh — it is hostile and unfriendly. Every moment here is imbued with an atmosphere of hopelessness, and the moral guidelines of the heroes are blurred, like road signs in a radioactive fog. The game is filled with details that make the Zone come alive: a thunderstorm will quickly cover you, a sudden emission will force you to seek shelter, or your gaze will catch on the peeling walls of buildings imbued with the spirit of Soviet modernism. And also — conversations around the campfire, inscriptions on the walls, the black humor of local bandits with their ridiculous nicknames. All this creates the feeling that you are not just playing, but really existing in this world.

The game does not forgive mistakes. Any inattention can be fatal: one wrong step — and you are already in the jaws of anomaly, one extra breath — and the dosimeter goes off the scale, reminding you that you will not last long without antiradiation. Monsters are not asleep – some tear you to pieces, some put pressure on your psyche, forcing you to lose touch with reality. And people are no better here – when you see a group of suspicious types, it is wiser to immediately check whether the machine gun is loaded.

Small quests, big stories what makes S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 so enjoyable

By the way, the shootouts in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 are done at a high level. It is important not only to pull the trigger, but to take into account every nuance of the weapon: caliber, range, accuracy, wear. Barrels wear out – and if you do not start repairs in time, at a critical moment you will jam. Everything you carry with you has weight: ammunition, armor, first aid kits, swag – you have to balance between survival and greed. Energy drinks here are not just a drink – they are a chance to survive another fight without running out of steam halfway.

The Zone does not tolerate the weak, but rewards those who know how to adapt. Will you survive? That’s another question.

Bugs, mutants and weak AI: what prevents S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 from becoming a masterpiece

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 remains true to the ideas of the original games, but at the same time inherits their controversial game design decisions, which even then raised questions. The first thing that catches your eye is the not always obvious structure of tasks and the confusing design of locations. Sometimes it’s just not clear where to go and what to do: you have to comb the marked area in search of the right point, wondering if you missed something. Another greeting from the past is the lack of normal fast travel and transport. Of course, you can use the services of guides who help you instantly get to the right place, but firstly, this is not a cheap pleasure, and secondly, finding them in the Zone is quite a quest. And while at the beginning of the game, walks through the radioactive wastelands captivate with the atmosphere and events happening around (thanks to the A-Life 2.0 system, the world lives its own life), closer to the middle of the journey turn into a dull marathon. Skif, not sparing energy drinks, rushes from one point to another, just to keep up the pace.

There are also problems with the difficulty balance. In the first hours, the game literally dumps all the horrors of survival in the Zone on the player: weapons are rusty junk, mutants are resilient to the point of absurdity, anomalies are encountered so often that you begin to feel like a participant in a bolt throwing competition. But once you survive this nightmare, after a couple of hours the situation changes dramatically. Skif gets strong armor and a powerful weapon (say, the same “Vintar”), and suddenly it is not he who fears the Zone, but the Zone should fear him. The sense of danger disappears, enemies no longer seem like a serious threat, and shootouts turn into a routine shooting gallery.

And it’s not just the imbalance, but also the frankly weak AI of the opponents. In Heart of Chornobyl, enemies behave as if they were trained not to survive, but to get shot as quickly as possible. They can:

  • Ignore the hero point-blank, even if he is a meter away.
  • Disappear literally two steps away, suddenly forgetting about your presence.
  • Shoot at shelters, containers or just in the air.
  • Run straight into bullets without the slightest attempt to dodge or flank.

You shouldn’t expect tactical maneuvers from them: no flanking, ambushes or using numerical advantage. Even a well-developed weapon system doesn’t save the shootouts from boredom. But weak artificial intelligence is far from the only technical problem of the game. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 turned out to be so buggy at the start that even Cyberpunk 2077 looks more stable in comparison to it at release. In addition to the standard set of freezes, artifacts, strange animations and disappearing interface, there are bugs that simply ruin the passage.

Some of the most critical are frequent “soft locks”, when the game blocks further progress along the plot. For example, a key door may close tightly or a character who is supposed to lead the player to the goal may freeze. In such cases, only a reboot helps, and sometimes even rolling back the save half an hour ago in the hope that this time it will work. All this leaves a feeling of dampness – a couple of additional months for polishing would definitely not hurt. If you do not want to spoil the impression, it is better to wait for a couple of large patches.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Strengths and Weaknesses of the Game

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 is a game that, like its predecessor, is far from ideal. It is full of technical problems, questionable decisions in game design, bugs and a feeling of rawness. Even if you close your eyes to weak optimization and shortcomings, not everyone will like it. But if you appreciate the dense atmosphere of the Zone, its harsh but fascinating narrative and the spirit of true stalking, then before you is the very same “Stalker” that has been awaited for many years. There will be no other.

Pros:

  • A huge, living world where every detail plays its role.

  • Optimization and technical condition leave much to be desired.
  • Artificial intelligence sometimes behaves extremely ridiculously.
  • The balance of mechanics and game systems clearly requires improvement.
