The main gameplay outside the map is an unusual mix of tower defense and RTS. Imagine: you place siege weapons, walls, barrels of gunpowder and even sticky cows to slow down the enemy boulder. You need to roll the boulder to the enemy castle, break through the gates and crush the general. But the path to the goal is complicated by:

• fighting bulls that knock a boulder off course,
• elephants with spearmen creating obstacles,
• wild lions in balloons threatening from above,
• sticky cows that make driving a nightmare.

Constant switching between attack and defense turns everything into a race for survival, and winding tracks add tension. If you get tired of the classic mode, the “Obstacle Course” will come to the rescue. Here, strategy fades into the background – two boulders start at the same time, and the winner is the one who first flattens the general in the castle. The game goes up to three victories. It’s not that this mode can captivate for a long time, but as a fun distraction it is quite suitable.

In addition to the campaign, you can always replay familiar levels in your own conditions. Additional modes are available in the main menu – for example, speed passing of maps or customization of your own boulder and symbols.

And if you want to compete not with AI, but with real players, you should look into the online lobby. In multiplayer, you can cause chaos with four players, and at the same time try out the special “Boulder Rolling” mode, in which you will have to overcome obstacles and throw a boulder into one of the vertical pockets. The irony is that Rock of Ages II is generally famous for its stunning landscapes – but on Switch you can only enjoy them through a TV screen, connecting the console to a docking station.

From the very first minutes, Rock of Ages II on Switch leaves mixed impressions. It would seem that the pocket format is ideal for such a game, but in reality, the portable mode is more of a detriment than an advantage. The main problems with the Switch version:

• Blurry and unfocused images, especially in handheld mode.
• The color palette of some levels literally burns your eyes.
• Critical bugs in online play that interfere with normal play.
• Difficulty in distinguishing track elements, which affects gameplay.
