We will not go into detail about the pros and cons of each game, but we will note that ACE Team has made it much more fun and exciting. Yes, their genres are different, but in both cases the whole point revolves around the ball – too much attention is paid to it.

And now about the main thing – the desire to laugh at the most inopportune moment. The developers were clearly inspired by the myths of Ancient Greece, which they probably read in childhood, like many of us. If you remember, the ancient gods did nothing but plot against each other, throw curses, throw tridents at opponents and carry out punishments with unprecedented cruelty. At the center of their story is Sisyphus, a hero whose fate is seemingly predetermined. By the will of the gods, he is doomed to forever push a boulder to the top of a mountain, only to have it roll down again and again. Endless labor without meaning, without hope and without end. But what if one day Sisyphus got tired of it? According to ACE Team, this is exactly what happened. The hero suddenly realized that his cursed stone is not just an instrument of torture, but a very useful tool. And if fate gave him a huge boulder, why not use it… say, for revenge?

What stands between you and winning Rock of Ages?

The gameplay of Rock of Ages is a fun combination of rolling a huge ball (reminiscent of the mechanics of The Ball) and building obstacles that prevent the opponent’s projectile from moving. Each map is a symmetrical track hovering somewhere in the air – or even in some abstract space. The main task is simple: roll your boulder to the enemy’s massive gate and break it. True, you won’t be able to do this on the first try – you need at least two or three successful attacks.

But here’s the problem – on the way to the goal, our poor ball encounters a variety of obstacles. During the “break” – when our boulder has already reached the end of the path, and the new one is not yet ready – the opponent puts up all sorts of troubles:

• Catapults with different ranges
• Mines with fuel
• Fighting animals
• Watchtowers
• Artillery headquarters calling for air support

In addition to the main goal (to roll and destroy), there are also side entertainments. Along the way, you can crush onlookers, smash enemy defensive structures to pieces and at the same time try to keep your ball relatively intact. The game generously rewards you with gold for chaos and destruction. The more you destroy, the fatter your wallet. However, you can avoid being distracted by this chaos and focus on the economy: build special “banks” that passively increase your income.

The Rock of Ages story campaign surprises… with its lack of expression. It would seem that such original mechanics, a bright style, unusual humor – but in the end, everything comes down to monotony. Yes, the videos are funny, the visual style is unique, the voice acting is pleasing – but the game itself too quickly turns into a drawn-out clown show. At some point, even the antics of the puppet heroes (literally puppets!) begins to irritate. With the bosses, too, not everything is smooth. It seems that the developers are ironic about typical battles in slashers, even showing the vulnerable spots of the monsters themselves. But when the battle comes down to three blows to the same place – all the visual style and humor fade into the background.

What about multiplayer in Rock of Ages?

In theory, Rock of Ages should shine in online play — after all, the mechanics are ideal for this. But in practice, the multiplayer turns out to be too monotonous. There are only two modes (and you will have already tried one of them in the campaign), and the variety of maps and tools for defense is clearly not enough. I would like more locations, more tactical options… most of all.

And the battles themselves online are too fleeting. A round lasts no longer than three minutes — this is enough to quickly get used to the mechanics, but not enough to hold your attention for a long time. As a result, the multiplayer gets boring even faster than the local musical compositions.

Fun but short-lived chaos: what’s wrong with Rock of Ages?

Rock of Ages is a game that gets its charm from a combination of a crazy idea, a bright visual style and unconventional gameplay. At first, it seems fresh and funny: controlling a giant boulder, smashing everything in your path and listening to comical monologues of historical figures is really fun. But the problem is that this effect quickly wears off. The campaign is short, the levels are similar to each other, and in multiplayer, the dynamics quickly slide into a repeating cycle.

However, if you like absurd humor, and the idea of ​​throwing a huge rock at an equally huge child’s head makes you smile, then Rock of Ages will definitely give you a couple of evenings. Another thing is that there is simply nothing to linger in it for long.
