At first glance, Rise of the Ronin is easy to compare to Ghost of Tsushima: both projects offer an open world, a Japanese atmosphere, and are released exclusively on PlayStation. But the deeper you dive, the more clearly you see how different they are – and it’s not just about the historical eras on which the stories are based. Ghost of Tsushima is more of a blockbuster-style entertainment, where the combat quickly reveals all the tricks and soon begins to repeat itself. But Rise of the Ronin is a completely different story: here the world is tougher, the approach is more demanding, and the game generously rewards those who are ready to understand its nuances. However, you wouldn’t expect anything else from Team Ninja – but this time they clearly outdid themselves.

We are transported to 1853 — Japan is on the threshold of change. The Sakoku era is ending — the country was cut off from the outside world for almost 200 years. The Tokugawa clan, which had ruled Japan since the 17th century, was afraid of foreign influence: Catholicism could shake the foundations, the rice trade threatened to escalate into something like the Opium Wars (like in China), and the threat of colonization was quite real — the example of the Philippines, captured by the Spanish, was before everyone’s eyes. To avoid this, Japan simply fenced itself off: it was forbidden to travel abroad, and foreigners were forbidden to enter the country. Violation was punishable by death.

But this could not continue for long. The Americans, who were hampered by Japan’s closed trade with Asia, decided it was time to act. Commander Matthew Perry set out for the country with “black ships” — these steamships looked menacing and were a symbol of strength. It is one of them that we get to in the prologue of Rise of the Ronin, controlling two heroes (you can choose their gender and appearance). An attempt to kill the commander fails – a mysterious masked man intervenes, saves Perry and captures one of the protagonists. As a result, the second one will have to continue the journey alone.

Japan is in turmoil: some advocate reforms and open borders, others fiercely defend the old order and disrupt any negotiations with foreigners. We can influence the course of events by completing missions both in favor of the shogunate and its opponents – no one forces you to choose a side once and for all.

Rise of the Ronin is not a dry chronicle of events, but a gripping action game that even manages to captivate you with history. After meeting another real person, your hand reaches out to open Wikipedia – to find out how everything really happened. The authors subtly convey the atmosphere of Bakumatsu – a time when Eastern and Western cultures begin to intertwine, but the locals still look with caution at strangers. Some Japanese want to study at European universities, others sell their inventions to foreigners or read foreign books. Many side quests are built on these clashes of worlds: here are Americans trying to win the hearts of the Japanese with bourbon and gifts, and villages that have not recovered from the cholera epidemic, and local dreamers dreaming of change.

Side quests feel like an integral part of the overall picture, and not just “content for show”. You want to explore, help, communicate – and the rewards are pleasant, but the main thing is interest. Quests with famous people open access to valuable trophies, collectibles – to new goods from merchants, shrines and other points of interest provide resources for leveling up. The game world is divided into three large zones – Yokohama, Edo and Kyoto. Each of them is several districts that you will have to “clear” of bandits at first. After that, residents return to the villages, traders appear, and flags allow you to quickly move around the map. Over time, levels of trust in the location open up – the more you do, the more you get: tasks, currency, resources, skill points.

All this sounds like a classic open world – flags instead of towers, enemy camps, a bunch of icons on the map. And it’s true: there is no revolution in game design here, Rise of the Ronin largely follows the templates familiar from Ubisoft games of recent years. But another thing is important: exploring the world is really exciting. Team Ninja did not take risks with experiments, but made a high-quality base. It is pleasant to move around the map: you can call a horse, jump from a height with a glider, hook onto a roof. And to get to some collectibles (from chests to hidden cats), you will have to turn on your ingenuity and run around the roofs in search of secret passages.

Combat, Styles, Stealth: How Combat Works in Rise of the Ronin

The game often involves engaging in fights — and, of course, Team Ninja got this element right. The combat system is Rise of the Ronin’s strong point, and certainly not something they would skimp on. The arsenal pleases with its variety: katanas, spears, dual blades, odachi, sabers — there is a weapon for every taste. Each type has its own fighting styles that are unlocked as you progress. Some strike faster, others strike more powerfully, but the main difference between the styles is their unique techniques that consume chi.

Different opponents are sensitive to different styles — the game honestly suggests this with the help of icons above their heads. Saw — switched — and off we go: the enemy loses stamina before your eyes. The techniques themselves can be upgraded: the more actively you use the style, the more opportunities open up.

There are also long-range weapons: from traditional Japanese bows to rifles and revolvers. All for different situations. A revolver is good when the target is large and not very fast – it is difficult for it to dodge a bullet. Shotguns allow you to take down enemies from a safe distance. And bows are the perfect choice for stealth. The game often gives you a chance to act unnoticed: jump on enemies from above, cut them from behind or lie in wait from the bushes. If you like this style – like in the old Assassin’s Creed – there is also room for stealth here. Moreover, over time, a skill will appear that allows you to see enemies through walls – just like eagle vision.

But still, most often you have to fight. And the main thing here is to correctly place blocks and parry in time. When you catch the timing and reflect blow after blow, you begin to feel like a real samurai. Confident, fast, deadly. True, the ideal rhythm can be lost in one second – and, alas, this is not only due to the player’s reaction, but also to the not very fair combat system.

Local enemies rarely hit without reason – they almost always use chains of moves that end with a powerful finishing blow. Before this, their weapons literally flash red. It is this final attack that needs to be parried – only then will the enemy get what he deserves and open up for a counterattack. If you parry everything except the last blow – alas, consider that your efforts were in vain. You could have simply dodged – the effect would have been the same. Getting the timing right is fun, especially when you catch the rhythm, but taking damage at the very last moment is a shame every time, especially when you have to spend a first aid kit.

Nevertheless, the rest of the combat in Rise of the Ronin is great. Especially in boss battles – you really have to sweat there. Consumables also help: you can poison weapons, increase damage, and even get temporary immunity to negative effects. Sometimes I even changed clothes before the battle – the game is full of stylish armor (in fact – hats and kimonos), and they not only give bonuses, but also strengthen each other within the same set. For example:

• increase damage to enemies with active negative effects,
• accelerate the restoration of chi,
• reduce energy consumption when using techniques,
• increase resistance to poison, fire or paralysis,
• strengthen attacks if you wear several items from the same set.

If you put a little effort into it, you can assemble kits for different playstyles — from a stealthy assassin to a clumsy but unkillable tank.

It’s nice that Team Ninja at least listened a little to fans tired of piles of useless loot. Yes, the inventory still gets clogged with dozens of almost identical items in a couple of hours, but now there is at least some help — you can turn on automatic sale of everything below a specified quality. This saves a lot of time. Although the solution is not the most elegant — all the resources, consumables and materials continue to fall in incredible quantities. You want to put things in order — but you only get to clear the rubble a little.

What are the pros and cons of Rise of the Ronin?

Rise of the Ronin is a gripping action game that successfully takes us to one of the most dramatic and interesting periods of Japanese history. Yes, the open world here does not shine with originality – the influence of the classic Ubisoft formula, with its towers, tasks and collections, is felt. But despite this, it is still pleasant to explore it: you are constantly distracted by side quests, battles and the search for all sorts of little things that somehow bring a reward – be it new equipment or a fighting style. For Team Ninja, this is the first experience of creating a truly large-scale game, and the debut can be considered successful. I want them to take more risks in the future – add fresh ideas and get rid of long-standing problems that drag on from project to project.

What I liked:

• The story develops gradually and becomes more and more addictive as you get to know the characters;
• The open world throws up a lot of distracting activities — and this is even a plus;
• A wide selection of weapons, and along with them — different fighting styles and techniques;
• The battles are spectacular, it is especially nice to parry a series of enemy attacks in time;
• You can complete missions in different ways: stealthily or straight-out;
• You can enable auto-sale of unnecessary equipment in the settings — convenient!

What I didn’t like:

• Despite the filters, there is still too much junk in the inventory — a typical problem for Team Ninja;
• Parrying is only counted after the last hit in a combo — not always convenient and sometimes gets in the way;
• The open world itself is too formulaic and does not offer anything truly new.

Rise of the Ronin System Requirements

To run Rise of the Ronin on a PC, you’ll need a 64-bit version of Windows 10 or 11. At the minimum, the game requires a processor equivalent to an Intel Core i5-10400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600, supported by at least 16 gigabytes of RAM. With this hardware, players can expect the game to run at 1080p resolution and maintain a steady 60 FPS under standard graphics settings, also using upscaling.
