The epic story of Rage in the middle of the fans’ eyes lasted for more than four years, captivating gamers and each time developing a soulful joy for its gamers. During this long period, fans were, as you might expect, on edge, as the release date was constantly delayed, creating a sense of uncertainty and frustration. The project was shuffled between different publishers, which only increased its growing popularity and rumors about its future. At first, Electronic Arts did not want to do much, but the development process went ahead, a decision that many called for a bit of a funny story. However, over time, Bethesda intervened and eventually took over both id Software and the distribution rights, changing the course of the project. As a result, anyone who cared even a little bit about the future of Rage turned their attention to the “father” of the industry, John Carmack. They were convinced that he would surely “fix it,” given his legendary status. Little did anyone know that John was embarking on a new adventure with a new belief system that revolved around… consoles. And so, quite a process took place, as Carmack, once considered a champion of computer gaming, began championing a platform that many traditional gamers were dubious of.

Don’t make anyone an absolute ideal.
That’s how things went. For a lot of PC gamers, successful programmer Carmack had become a legend in the gaming world. After years of pioneering innovation, he eventually decided to shift focus and pursue consoles instead. Is it really necessary to delve into the implications this had for Rage? The much-hyped new engine, id Tech 5, buckled under the weight of console limitations, resulting in a PC version that, unfortunately, lacked many of the features and improvements that the PR team had been curiously touting. A coveted offering that once promised to elevate the gaming experience to a new level was compromised, leaving fans disappointed and hungry for the depth and complexity that was originally expected. What was once a beacon of improvement now felt like a watered-down version of itself, raising questions about the future direction of the franchise. John was quick to point the finger at the graphics card manufacturers, claiming that they screwed up by not releasing the necessary drivers in a timely manner. Unfortunately, by the time he voiced his complaints, it was too late — the feelings of players, whatever came of the project. Sure, the project failed at first, but players continued to play with their sleeves up. They constantly tweaked settings, made various adjustments, applied updates, and downloaded the official patch in the hopes of achieving a playable experience. After much trial and error, most users were finally able to run Rage with graphical settings that were, if not perfect, then at least acceptable. Interestingly, some features were introduced via patch that were originally missing from the game’s menus, adding an extra layer of frustration for those who were waiting for those settings.
The narrative opens with some shocking news — everything is utterly disastrous! Humanity, devoid of soul and compassion, has faced dire consequences for its many sins and has been cast down into a fiery abyss. The asteroid Apophis collided with Earth, leading to the near-total destruction of civilization. Those who managed to survive quickly returned to their familiar ways — establishing a ruthless dictatorial regime, igniting wars over resources, competing fiercely for dominance, and engaging in opportunistic trading. It’s a chaotic scene of desperation and greed. People, with their flawed nature, never seem to learn from history; they repeat the same mistakes over and over, driven by ambition and avarice. What can you truly expect from them in times of crisis?
During such a remarkable time, the protagonist begins to awaken from a deep slumber. Who he is, what he represents, and most importantly, why he has emerged remains a profound mystery to both us and him, as well as to those around him. The characters he encounters regard him with a mixture of curiosity and skepticism. They often remark that he appears strikingly different, suggesting he must surely be sent for a greater purpose. Yet, despite their assumptions, those hints do not reveal the full truth. Each encounter leaves them with more questions than answers, and the air is thick with unspoken possibilities. However, the protagonist seems completely indifferent to the environment around him. Our “chosen one” acts like an obedient creature, deprived of any real freedom of action. When given a command, he simply obeys. He is told to do something? Fine, I’ll go and do it. He is told to go somewhere and eliminate a group of enemies? No problem, I’ll go and deal with it. Many have reported that they felt sadness at his incomprehensible situation, which is easy to understand – the writers do not show any real alternatives, forcing the character to obediently move forward. He is locked into a period of tasks and missions, he is never given the freedom to explore other options or make meaningful choices. Instead, he is forced to carry out multiple assignments given to him by complete strangers, which deprives him of any sense of individuality or personal motivation.
What does my name mean to you?
Nothing special, really. Although the inhabitants of this wasteland do have names, or at least nicknames, which hardly make them stand out or make them all that memorable. The writers don’t seem to have invested much time in creating a coherent plot; instead, they stitched together a series of cliches and stereotypes, neglecting to develop a rich history for the world we find ourselves in. The NPCs are particularly disappointing – they don’t have any special dialogue. Instead, they either deliver monotone, lifeless lines that strictly stick to the point, or give dry, unmotivated comments about our accomplishments using just one flat phrase. It feels like they’re just supporting characters in a world that lacks strength and personality. It’s simply not possible to just approach someone and chat casually. Unless, of course, you’re interested in taking on yet another tedious extra assignment. We discover what’s happening around us through brief monologues interspersed throughout the action, delivered in a soulless, authoritative briefing style: “In short, those over there are the bad guys, and we’re the good ones, so you should help us out. If you don’t want to, then feel free to leave.” But honestly, where is there to go? The pressure to conform and assist is overwhelming, leaving little room for genuine connection or understanding. It’s a stark reminder of how disconnected we’ve become in our interactions, reduced to mere tasks rather than meaningful exchanges.
In Rage, a wide array of debris and discarded items can be found scattered throughout the landscape, mostly comprising junk intended for sale or components used to craft both useful and less useful objects. However, you won’t come across any text, audio, or video recordings that recount the events that transpired on the planet after the catastrophic disaster. There is no narrative, no trace of life. Sadness sets in when you realize that the books scattered around you are not meant to be looked at or read; they are simply discarded paper, used by humans as fuel for their fires by a twist of fate.
In Rage, this lack of power makes it nearly impossible to escape the incomprehensible narrative that moves quickly along its tracks, no matter how much you want to break free. You find yourself forced to accept and adapt to the game’s established rules, subject to a pace that offers little opportunity for reflection or engagement. Even if they aren’t every player’s top choice, one effective way to blow off some steam is by diving into the countless shootouts available. The variety of weapons is impressive, catering to all kinds of preferences. Yet, it seems that most players gravitate towards simpler choices. You can easily find a plethora of posts online claiming that once you get your hands on explosive shotgun shells, all other options tend to fade into oblivion. The thrill of unleashing such powerful rounds can overshadow the appeal of other weapons. It’s fascinating how a single upgrade can shift your focus entirely, making you forget about the diverse arsenal at your disposal. The main concern in this event will be finding or crafting enough ammo, a handful of grenades, and maybe a few bandages just in case. Anything else can be dead weight, cluttering up your pockets and hindering your movement speed (albeit only in a figurative sense). Eventually, these unnecessary weapons will be sold to merchants for a little extra cash.
However, if boredom sets in, why not spend some time creating a robot companion or turret? Watching your creation deal with enemies can be quite a spectacle. Of course, you can always brew yourself a cup of tea and biscuits, but is that what we expect from a John Carmack game?
Sometimes, we find ourselves thrust into rather amusing battles set against unconventional backdrops—like engaging in a meat-themed game show where the objective is to shoot enemies within a time limit. However, aside from these quirky scenarios, the reality of war often reduces to tedious clean-up missions. It’s a relief that, more often than not, it isn’t necessary to wipe out every last foe. By the end, your humble servant was simply charging forward, leaving the dim-witted enemies trailing behind, desperate to reach the conclusion of this seemingly pointless narrative. The repetitive nature of the tasks can be draining, yet the occasional absurdity provides a brief respite from the monotony, making the experience oddly entertaining despite its inherent futility. However, luck has not always smiled on the hero. There have been many instances where they have found themselves deliberately locked in a room, the door firmly closed until the last of the invading creatures has been dealt with.
Interestingly, while the enemies may exhibit a variety of behavior, they always display the best level of stupidity. For example, noisy, howling mutants, swinging makeshift clubs, leap forward with reckless abandon, seemingly trying to sink their teeth into the hero’s neck. Is this a wise strategy? Hardly. Their erratic tactics can make us duck and run, adding a touch of excitement to the fight. However, taking aim and putting a bullet between the eyes of anyone who is eager for a physical confrontation is a task that proves relatively simple. As for the heavily armored special forces, they present even less of a challenge. Their predictable movements and reliance on brute force make them easy prey. After all, it’s not just about survival; It’s about demonstrating skill and precision in the face of overwhelming odds. They mostly emerge from their shelters, so grenades and the basic “going from behind” work flawlessly.
Hold on to the steering wheel tighter, inattentive driver.
Oh, I almost forgot! We were promised an unforgettable journey through the gorgeous, deserted places of a post-apocalyptic world, full of hidden dangers and surprises! In fact, we have a vehicle that not only can be upgraded, but also often needs to be upgraded to advance the storyline. Why, you ask? It’s all designed to destroy as many vehicles as possible, which without explanation materialize in the same place during your adventure from point A to point B, circling around like unpleasant flies. You’ll earn a little money for eliminating these various causes, but expect to spend a fortune on ammunition, repairs and, of course, your sanity. As you may have figured out, it makes much more sense to just rush past them in some ways; even a flimsy little buggy can easily leave these boring enemies in its dust.
Incidentally, we’ll find ourselves making this annoying journey from point A to point B all too often throughout the game. After completing any tedious task, we’ll inevitably have to return to the quest giver to check in and get another “Go and Destroy” mission. It all adds up to more than a little unpleasant, really. The world in Rage isn’t exactly expansive, making these trips feel more like a quick jaunt to the next village to just grab some bread.
You won’t find much variety in your experience, as along your journey, aside from the previously mentioned enemy vehicles and the occasional defensive towers, you won’t come across anything else of interest. Now, if you’re truly yearning for some social interaction, the multiplayer mode is here for you! However, let’s be clear from the start—there are no familiar multiplayer modes that fans of id Software games might expect in this title. So, what should you anticipate, you might ask, feeling a bit lost? Well, there are two main activities to choose from—either racing around in buggies or teaming up for cooperative gameplay through levels from the single-player campaign.
Surprised and scratching your head? I certainly am too… It’s a stark departure from what many might anticipate when jumping into a game with such a rich legacy. While the racing can be exhilarating and the cooperative play offers a chance to strategize with friends, it feels somewhat disconnected from the intense, fast-paced multiplayer battles that have defined the genre. It leaves one wondering if this choice was a bold step forward or simply a departure from the beloved formula.

It appears so. Rage acts as a significant cautionary tale for those eagerly awaiting Doom 4. Considering that after its release, Carmack didn’t pull his hair out, drop to his knees, or lament, “Oh, what have I done?!”, id Software intends to keep focusing on less advanced yet more widely accessible gaming platforms. This shift indicates a strategic decision to prioritize broader reach over cutting-edge technology, which might resonate more with gamers who appreciate engaging gameplay over purely technical prowess. By doing so, they can ensure they don’t make the same mistakes with the upcoming fourth installment of “Doom,” which fans are eagerly anticipating. The gaming community deserves a game that truly honors the legacy of its predecessors.
