Beneath the feet of the few passersby, shards of glass crunched, while puddles on the cracked pavement reflected the indifferent gray sky above, as if mirroring the city’s desolation. On military bases, useless machinery smoldered in the aftermath, a reminder of lost hope, while the so-called “defenders” rushed to abandon this forsaken place: lead and toxins are utterly powerless against the chaos that reigns here. Did the hurricane tear apart the very heart of New York? One could certainly argue that. Like any fierce storm, it carries a name – Alex Mercer, a name that will linger in the memories of those who endured this turmoil.

It all began in a less tragic way: a morgue in New York, yet another “client.” Do polygonal corpses frighten you? No? Get ready to be scared: the body unexpectedly revives and reveals itself as a carrier of a terrifying virus! Feeling settled? It’s too early for that. Alex Mercer, the honorary pathogen host, grapples with amnesia, struggling to piece together the fragments of his lost memories. Meanwhile, the horrific virus was concocted by the enigmatic corporation GENTEK, shrouded in mystery and dark intentions! Voices from countless characters in films and games about sinister organizations and lethal infections echo in his mind, fueling his sense of urgency and confusion. As he navigates this chaotic world, he recalls the pivotal phrase that drives him: “I need to find out who I am and seek revenge!” Once spoken, it becomes his mantra, propelling him forward. With each step, he unravels layers of betrayal and intrigue. It’s time to act! Let’s embark on this thrilling quest for vengeance, uncovering the truth behind his past and the sinister plans of those who wronged him!

The game officially kicks off, plunging us into a thrilling action experience. To set the scene, we are shown a cool trailer showing our main character, a tough guy as tough as a steelworker from Chelyabinsk. He boldly jumps across rooftops, expertly dispatching enemies with impressive flair, and has the unique ability to transform into them – everything you could wish for in a hero. After his successful performance, the reins are handed over to us, and we find ourselves in the middle of the chaos of the battle between the US Army and the infected (of course, Mercer managed to spread the infection far and wide – what did you expect?). There is some anticipation as players, as we rub our hands in anticipation, ready to crush our enemies. We dive into the fray, but are soon met with a wave of deep disappointment. The process of throwing punches feels oddly monotonous, and enemies dismember themselves in an unattractive way that lacks the visceral excitement we were expecting. On top of that, the graphics feel four years out of date, failing to add the level of excitement we were hoping for. It quickly becomes clear that the initial hook completely missed the mark, leaving us yearning for more solid gameplay.

After letting out a typical “ugh,” we push through the training mission until the very end, then rewind to the story’s beginning, where soldiers are still softly snoring in their barracks, blissfully unaware of the chaos to come. Meanwhile, the city’s inhabitants rush around like frantic ants, each absorbed in their own hurried tasks. We take out a couple of helicopters, their blades slicing through the still air, and begin our exploration of the city. It proves to be eerily lifeless long before the outbreak even began. The dull streets are filled with aimless pedestrians, and the traffic jams of taxis stuck on the same monotonous route at every corner create a dreary scene that feels almost post-apocalyptic. The only familiar sights are the iconic Central Park, the majestic Brooklyn Bridge, the bustling Times Square, and the towering Chrysler Building, all appearing strangely out of place in this desolate landscape. Honestly, living in a New York like this isn’t our cup of tea; the vibrancy and life we once knew have vanished. But jumping across rooftops in search of adventure? That could work and might just offer a fleeting glimpse of excitement in this otherwise lifeless world.

The Incredible Alex Mercer: Hero, Monster or Ultimate Weapon?

Mercer isn’t just any ordinary hero like Spider-Man, swinging through the city on webs; he navigates his world on his own two feet. The parkour the developers boast about isn’t true parkour at all—Alex can effortlessly scale a vertical wall to reach the rooftop of a five-story building in mere seconds. He leaps an incredible thirty meters in length and glides through the air like a flying squirrel, creating a spectacle that defies gravity. There are simply no obstacles to confront, which means there’s no real challenge. Is it boring? Absolutely not. The thrill of making characters like Altair and Lara Croft green with envy never loses its charm, especially when Alex finds himself being chased by helicopters and swarms of terrifying mutants. It keeps the adrenaline pumping and the excitement alive. Well, after all the acrobatics and show-stopping feats, it’s time to shift gears and focus on the real mission: saving the world from impending doom!

The infection is rapidly consuming the city at an astonishing rate: buildings are engulfed in a thick, red-black sludge, while viral blisters swell ominously on some structures, from which new mutants “emerge.” The U.S. military is desperately trying to combat the outbreak, but their efforts yield mixed and often disappointing results. While one side can assist in capturing various areas of the city, this proves to be of little use overall: the map is redrawn within the storyline, rendering previous gains meaningless. Therapy and conventional treatments fail to provide any significant relief, leaving only the option of surgical intervention. In short, we are left with no choice but to resort to cutting and drastic measures to address this terrifying crisis.

Yes, you heard it right—it’s all about cutting. The salvation of the world is achieved through such brutal methods that it becomes hard to tell: is Alex a hero or a villain? Yet, that distinction hardly matters. What truly counts is that the intense battles are the primary reason why Prototype earned the distinguished title of “Our Choice.” The developers went above and beyond to ensure a comfortable extermination of foes, equipping players with speed, strength, endurance, and a plethora of special abilities. In Mercer’s body, the virus has mutated, granting him the ability to control his very form. In the blink of an eye, Alex can sprout whips, claws, hammers, and massive blades from his arms, envelop himself in thick armor, or unleash hundreds of gigantic tendrils from his body. Even his health replenishment is strikingly extravagant. Alex consumes his victims, and the scenes of this “devouring” are astonishingly brutal: hammers emerge from his hands to crush skulls, while blades extend from his fingers to create a classic salad of chaos.

The improved “Web of Intrigue” in Prototype wanted to make how the story would progress. Players collect fragmented memories to piece together a complex web, uncovering Alex’s past and finding important answers. It allows for the absorption of different characters, taking in not only their appearance with the new camouflage ability, but also their memorable moments. While the concept is interesting, its execution falls short. The story lacks strength and the characters feel one-dimensional. The plot can be a bit unexpected in terms of foreseeing during the first few hours of gameplay. However, we can remain optimistic that future developers will take note of the “Web of Intrigue” concept. With some refinement, the next wave of games could deliver a more visually satisfying game.

In this game, abilities aren’t just handed out like candy; they’re earned through Evolution Points. You can accumulate these points by engaging in all sorts of activities that disrupt the city’s infrastructure or take down mutants. Whether it’s through intense battles, large-scale destruction, commandeering vehicles, or eliminating nests, every action contributes to your score. You can also rack up valuable EP by completing simple side missions. Just find the green markers on the city map, approach them, and tackle tasks like “Eliminate as many soldiers as you can” or “Race from point A to point B as fast as possible.” The motivation to earn these extra points is compelling. Almost every skill you can unlock plays a crucial role in combating specific foes or simply adds an exciting twist to your battles. Imagine the thrill of leaping onto an enemy during a fight and riding them like a surfboard! Such unique mechanics not only enhance your gameplay experience, but they also keep each encounter fresh and exhilarating. So dive into the chaos, earn those Evolution Points, and unleash your full potential in this action-packed adventure!

Imagine a world where brute force and destruction converge, creating a playground for chaotic warfare. Picture this: We storm a military base, our weapons cutting through enemies and obstacles. Trees and buildings crumble before us as we unleash our aggression, charging onto rooftops and launching ourselves at helicopters, smashing them with a welcome punch. In the confusing chaos of battle, we activate the Hammer Fist, shaping the tank below into scrap metal. Switching to the Claws, we slam our hands into the ground, watching as large spikes erupt from the asphalt, tearing everything apart in a frenzy of destruction. We then grab a cowardly soldier, forcing his head into his body to absorb his essence and restore our health, a dark twist of fate. Finally, we unleash our strongest move: an explosion of deadly tentacles that can rush outward. Grabbing the chopper with our whip, we take up positions on it, escaping the chaos below. In flight, we leap from the cockpit, transforming into a recently fallen soldier to blend into the crowd, masters of disguise and deception, ready for the next wave of carnage.

Sharp thorns and bitter notes

It’s in these unexpected instances that Prototype really shines. As we progress through the game, the number of enemies increases in a welcome way, and we find ourselves getting stronger with each challenge (barring a few exceptions). But as we reach the second half of the game, Prototype begins to lose its footing. The missions can really frustrate players who came to have fun. The placement of checkpoints can be particularly frustrating, often leaving players feeling unsupported at critical moments. There are also times when the game can overwhelm us with an excessive number of formidable enemies. At first, the gameplay feels a bit unsettling, like “I’m Godzilla and you’re just insignificant flies.” But as the game progresses, so many rocket-launching soldiers and elite supersoldiers can be thrown at us that we don’t even have time to swing a whip.

The bosses are somewhat lacking in creativity and challenge. They don’t demand any special strategies; instead, they force you to hammer away at them with your most powerful attack for just a few minutes. What’s more, they fail to leave a lasting impression visually, apart from perhaps the giant, googly-eyed worm that stands out. The other “mini-bosses” consist of nothing more than overgrown soldiers and basic mutants, easily defeated with a simple tactic of spam clicking combined with evading their attacks. It raises the question: has the virus truly eradicated all the more interesting and terrifying creatures that could have added depth to the experience? It feels like a missed opportunity for more engaging encounters in the game.

The final thorn in… well, the tentacle is the graphics. As mentioned earlier, they feel about four years out of date. The character models lack polygon density, the animation is anything but smooth, and the destruction systems along with the explosions are incredibly outdated. However, while the “delayed” technology helps prevent frustrating lags and allows players to wreak havoc even on mid-range machines, it raises the question of the somewhat “toy-like” feel of the action. Even a classic genre staple, like a building explosion, resembles more of a mishap in a makeshift card town than a dramatic cinematic event. Yet, fortunately, the developers have managed to divert attention from these unappealing special effects with an overwhelming flood of blood and complete chaos in their virtual version of New York. The sheer intensity and mayhem can distract from the visuals, making players feel immersed despite the shortcomings. It’s a wild ride, and while it may not be visually stunning, it offers a unique blend of chaos and excitement that keeps players engaged.

Is evolution a consequence of mutation?

We could also discuss the revamped leveling system, side quests, mutations, and new enemies. However, these game elements don’t significantly alter the overall experience. It is undoubtedly a good game, even nearly exceptional. Yet, the drawbacks I’ve previously mentioned prevent me from giving it a higher rating. From my subjective perspective, I’d label the game as a “time passer,” largely due to the off-putting main character, which completely diminishes my desire to replay it or have more fun within it. Objectively speaking, though, it deserves a solid “commendable,” though it falls just short of being “extraordinary.”

  • Pros: The best parkour that keeps you on your toes; a rich set of abilities that enhance the gameplay; Plenty of action and blood to satisfy your desires; battles that leave you wanting more.
  • Cons: Average graphics that could use an update; confusing storyline that occasionally loses focus; repetitive bosses that can drag on; less engaging second half that may not recapture the initial excitement.
