Project CARS 2
Fans of racing simulators are currently living in a golden age – there are plenty of great games! F1 2017 and Project CARS 2 are already at the start, and Forza Motorsport 7 and Gran Turismo Sport are about to hit the track. Each of these games is good in its own way, so choosing just one will be difficult. Project CARS 2 takes breadth – it is available on all current platforms and covers many racing disciplines. Well, how can you resist, especially after the successful debut of the first part?

Slightly Mad Studios is a team of enthusiasts who once started out creating mods for racing games. The irony is that their work inspired not only gamers, but also future professional racers, such as multiple Le Mans winner Tommy Milner. Later, the studio worked on the controversial Need for Speed: Shift and Shift 2 Unleashed, and then released the unsuccessful Test Drive: Ferrari Racing Legends, which received devastating reviews on Metacritic.
In 2011, Slightly Mad Studios surprised the gaming community by launching a crowdfunding campaign for the “perfect simulator” — Project CARS. Crowdfunding brought the studio $5 million, confidence in the future, and the opportunity to attract famous racers to the project, including Ben Collins. The experiment was successful — the game sold over a million copies on Steam alone. Of course, the studio did not put off the sequel for long and soon announced a sequel, again relying on the support of players and cooperation with a major publisher Bandai Namco.
Project CARS 2 was created on the same engine as the first part, so experts will easily recognize many tracks and car models. However, there are enough changes: the developers added a powerful tool for creating screenshots, well-developed replays with flexible angle settings and lively pit stops. However, the innovations are unlikely to be immediately noticeable, especially if you have not played the original. Project CARS 2 remains harsh on beginners accustomed to arcade racing. Regular crashes to the side of the road can be annoying, and owners of professional steering wheels and pedals can envy. And setting up controls on a gamepad is a separate quest that requires patience.

Project CARS 2 Physics, Realism, and Problems: Game Analysis
Project CARS 2 does not give any concessions to beginners. It is merciless, but at the same time honest – without any “casual” concessions. Yes, basic settings like tire pressure can be left on automatic, but if you want to tame a wayward car, you will have to understand your mistakes and communicate with a virtual engineer. For example, if the car constantly skids in turns or you can’t squeeze out the maximum on straights, it’s time to dig into the parameters.
The developers from Slightly Mad Studios assure that their creation conveys the behavior of production and sports cars as accurately as possible. And they back up their words with authoritative opinions – for example, Chris Goodwin, chief test pilot of McLaren, said that the behavior of cars of this brand in Project CARS 2 is close to reality. Speaking about physics, the developers often recall the LiveTrack 3.0 system. It makes the track “live”: when cutting corners, racers bring dirt, sand and grass onto the road, and the worn rubber remains on the asphalt, creating the so-called “grip”. Because of this, the grip on the track is constantly changing depending on the condition of the tires and the surface.
Another factor is added to this – dynamic weather and changing time of day. Want to race under the bright sun? No problem. Prefer rain, a snowstorm or even a storm with lightning? All this is here, and such conditions make the races even more realistic. For comparison, the same Assetto Corsa is not capable of this. But it was not without problems. Slightly Mad Studios tried to cover too many disciplines – Formula 1, IndyCar, rallycross, Le Mans … and as a result, made mistakes in some places. For example, the behavior of cars on an icy track raises questions. In collisions, the cars sometimes behave strangely, flying into the air with the grace of a piece of foam plastic. In some cases, the curbs seem not to be felt at all.
And also — skidding. To confidently take turns, you need to:
- Study each track thoroughly.
- Select the right braking points.
- Find the optimal trajectories.
- Adapt to the surface condition and grip.
And even after all this, surprises are not excluded. But the main question is why, despite all the realism of the simulation, players consistently beat real records on famous circuits? It seems that something is wrong here.
Project CARS 2: Feel like a racer at any time of the year
The true racing spirit of Project CARS 2 is that you can get behind the wheel of your favorite car and go to any track at any time of year. Imagine how great it is to squeeze the maximum out of a Nissan GT3, Ferrari 488 or Lamborghini Huracan GT3! Regardless of your experience level, there is a discipline in the game in which you will feel confident. Personally, I especially liked the fight for fractions of a second in the IndyCar oval races.
The developers from Slightly Mad Studios made the career mode one of the key elements of the game, but its main value is in access to unique challenges. But the depth and involvement in the career is clearly lacking: few radio communications, no letters from managers or teams – the atmosphere of the competition could be much brighter. Take at least WWE from 2K, where the player is lured in by interviews and unexpected conflicts.
Reviewers praise Project CARS 2 for its immersion in motorsports, rather than for the meticulous simulation of every element of the car. However, opinions are divided: some consider the game realistic down to the smallest detail, while others call it “a near-sim.” Rally fans are advised to check out DiRT Rally, and those who crave “formula” emotions – F1 2017. At the same time, asphalt races in Project CARS 2 received the highest ratings, but other types of races were not to everyone’s liking. Steam has enough complaints about the behavior of cars in turns, the difficulty of driving without a steering wheel, and sudden changes in the weight of the cars.
Nevertheless, Project CARS 2 has firmly taken its place in racing thanks to its excellent eSports potential. It has a well-thought-out system for selecting opponents (the more carefully you drive, the more adequate your opponents are), and convenient tools for organizing tournaments. At the same time, the simulator remains accessible: it is complex, but not overly hardcore, which makes it attractive to a wide audience.
What’s great about Project CARS 2:
- Dynamic weather and season changes that affect car control.
- A huge selection of cars and tracks, including iconic racing series.
- A flexible settings system that allows you to adjust the difficulty to suit yourself.
- Excellent eSports potential with convenient tools for organizing races.
- A reasonable balance between simulation and accessibility, which makes the game attractive for both beginners and racing veterans.
Finally, a few words about the console version. While the PC has no problem with performance, there are some nuances on the PS4 and Xbox One. Digital Foundry notes that the resolution on standard consoles drops below 1080p (PS4) and 900p (Xbox One), and the frame rate in busy scenes fluctuates between 40 and 50 fps. Personally, I encountered long loading times on the PS4. The best option would be the PS4 Pro, where the dynamic resolution tends to 1440p, and a stable 60 fps provides comfortable gameplay.
Pros and Cons of Project CARS 2: Is It Worth Playing?
It used to seem like there were only two titans in the racing sim world – Gran Turismo and Forza Motorsport. But Project CARS 2 has proven that it has ambitions not just to compete with them, but to seriously take its place among the best.
Pros:
- A huge car park – dozens of brands, hundreds of models and many tracks are available immediately, without the need for a long unlock.
- Dynamic weather – a sudden downpour, unexpected puddles, mud on the turns and cooling asphalt change the course of the race in real time.
- High-quality picture and sound – visual detail is at a height, and the roar of engines and tire noise create a complete sense of presence.
- Excellent optimization – the game runs smoothly even on not the most powerful systems.
Cons:
- Physics leaves questions – Slightly Mad tried, but the feeling from the controls is still not ideal.
- A steering wheel is a must – without it, it will be difficult to reveal the potential of the game, the controls on the gamepad are not so precise.
