In Payday 2 you will enter with pleasant characters into an atmosphere of crime and robbery, they are offered a certain social network Cenet. You have a city map on which available missions appear. In fact, you cannot choose what you need – only from the proposed options. There are quite a lot of them on the map, and perhaps all possible missions are present there. But can you imagine what it’s like when you frantically rush around this map with your mouse, clicking on all the shortcuts in search of the mission you need? How can you screw up an elementary level selection so badly? An extremely stupid and inconvenient decision on the part of the developers. And when the player finally figures out how to start the game, he will see a rather sad picture.

From the very beginning of the game’s release, many complained about the graphic point of view of PayDay 2, which has a number of technical problems: FPS drops, incorrectly working effects. For example, you have a non-standard monitor with a resolution of 1680 × 1050, and the picture is incredibly torn and jerky. But all these are standard problems when starting the game, and they will definitely be fixed. On the very first day, a patch was released that corrected constant crashes between missions and until 2025, the game reached the peak in the serviceability of shortcomings, players considered complaining less.

Heists as an art: variety and purpose of missions in the game

After such a sad first impression, the game itself begins, and you immediately forget about everything said above. The first and second parts of this series look almost identical in general, but the difference between them is gigantic. Despite the fact that in both games you rob and shoot back at the cops, they are perceived completely differently. There are quite a lot of different missions in the game. I can’t say the exact number, but there are definitely twice as many as in the first part. The variety is pleasing: in addition to the banal robbery of a bank or jewelry store, you will also steal paintings, steal the proceeds of a nightclub, and even cook meth.

Although in reality it is far from as simple as Walter White said. It would be possible to come up with something even more interesting, for example, robbing an airplane in the air, but in principle what we have is also excellent. Many of these missions last for several days, that is, they consist of several episodes united by a common idea. For example, in the first episode you steal paintings, in the second – sell them.

In their new surroundings, our protagonists find themselves entirely reliant on their employers, who use a specialized network known as Crime.net. This platform serves as an intriguing blend of Facebook and Google Maps, specifically tailored for criminal activities. It helps employers scout for bold individuals willing to tackle sensitive issues and solve complex problems in Payday 2. There’s certainly no shortage of work available—missions are plentiful—but the heroes cannot simply choose a task that appeals to them. Instead, they must patiently wait for a client to announce new opportunities and assignments, adding an element of uncertainty to their already precarious situation. On the Crime.net map, you’ll notice mission icons that appear and disappear, creating an active terrain of opportunity. These icons not only show ongoing heists, but also highlight available locations where new recruits can join. Once we find a job that interests us, we make our choice and confirm it, full of anxiety, preparing to enter into real crazy heists. There’s a certain appeal in chasing money that’s been sitting idle in secure bank vaults, waiting for someone brave enough to claim it. The missions we encounter are varied and vary in difficulty – the more difficult the task, the greater the reward fee. The most difficult tasks often promise the biggest payouts, making them irresistible to those looking to maximize their income. Among the most lucrative opportunities are chains of tasks that build on each other, culminating in a grand finale. The main reward for completing these challenging tasks is revealed on the final day, adding an extra level of anticipation and excitement.

Character leveling: the path from a beginner to a master of robberies

Here comes the next aspect of the game – leveling up. After completing each mission, you get experience and money. With a new level, you can buy new guns, their upgrades, masks, customization methods, as well as various skills and abilities for leveling up. Everything is clear: you take the M4, attach a collimator and go to fight for democracy. But with pumping everything is more interesting.

Skills are scattered in four directions: Mastermind – so to speak, the brain of the operation, Enforcer – a tank, as well as Ghost and last class is the Technician, a jack of all trades: he mines, makes turrets, and can somehow make a powerful drill work absolutely silently., with which, everything is extremely clear. And this “anywhere” is a different place each time in Payday 2.

How Payday 2 is better than the first part

In general, there is a lot to say – the variety in Payday 2 is off the charts. The game even slightly begins to resemble the Hitman series, because on high difficulties, brute force will not surprise anyone. You need to try to be quiet, not allow the cops to be called and not raise the alarm. Washington is a rich city where there is always work for our heroes. This is possible only thanks to a well-pumped character, as well as coordinated actions of the team.

When the whole team understands what is happening, acts in a coordinated manner, and each player is busy with his own business, you suddenly realize: you are actually pulling off a serious criminal case. And this is the main difference between the second part and the first. I have no idea whether there was any stealth and variety in the first game. Although those players who played it for a decent number of hours, everything always turned into shooting endlessly advancing cops while the drill does its job.

In the second part, you also often take up guns and give them hell. But at the same time, you understand that your goal is not shooting cops, but a safe. And at this very moment, the game turns from a dull shooter into a real raider simulator, where you come as a team, do the job and try to get out as quickly as possible. Leave, taking with you everything you can carry. In these moments, the game is simply amazing. The action itself has also become noticeably better: the weapons feel great, and the enemies die cheerfully. The guns boom so juicy when fired that you involuntarily recall that very cult scene from the movie “Heat”. Payday 2 gives players a large arsenal of weapons to choose from, enough to satisfy even the most discerning of fans of deadly gear. The game features a diverse selection, including powerful assault rifles, devastating shotguns, and maneuverable submachine guns in Payday 2. Each weapon can be customized with a variety of upgrades, such as precision scopes, silent suppressors, tactical flashlights, and ergonomic stock attachments, giving players more of a balance between all stats. However, beyond firearms, each team member has access to a variety of important equipment designed to enhance their effectiveness during missions. This includes vital first aid kits for healing, tactically placed explosives for creating sabotage, and ammo bags to keep the team well-equipped at all times.

Design and gameplay

Sound design is generally a very strong point of the game. All the characters are well voiced and scream very realistically, demanding that people fall face down on the floor. And the music since the first part has been a powerful tool for dynamic and intense gameplay. In addition to the fact that it is incredibly cool in itself, it also changes depending on the game situations, making your hands sweat in Payday 2. However, the developers are already being bombarded with letters attempting to “customize” the safe house for greater atmosphere, and this has already appeared as a DLC. MNT plays when you quietly open the back door of the store, and the most powerful techno beat pounding while you, under heavy fire from the cops, throw the loot across the final line.

Even though the developers made a mistake or two, PayDay 2 is an incredible co-op shooter that can stand alongside Left 4 Dead 2 without trying to stupidly copy it. The game has a huge amount of quality content, and thanks to the customization and development system, it will capture your interest for a long time. The only condition is that it is advisable to get three friends and play together, so that everyone develops their specialization and is always in their own path. Because only in such moments the game can truly open up and begins to shine.
