You can see the ferocious beginning of the horror from the very beginning. He considers Outlast 2, along with the new Resident Evil, almost the main horror of 2017. After all, the first part in 2013 made a strong impression with its brutal dynamics, naked naturalism and the ability to make the player feel like a cornered victim who is forced to constantly run away and hide. Were the nervous expectations of thrill-seekers and brick makers justified?

This project has sparked a wave of imitators and clones of various qualities, and, even more crucially, it set a high standard that many have found challenging to achieve. Outlast 2 emerges as a bold attempt to raise that benchmark yet again, aiming to redefine what players expect from survival horror. Below in our article we will discuss the most important points of the game.

Outlast 2 plot

The plot of the second part is not connected with the first, but with a worse atmosphere and general tone of the narrative. In the first part, we played as a journalist who, nervously looking around, made his way through the corridors of a psychiatric hospital with a video camera at the ready. It served both as a flashlight in night shooting mode and a journal where important scenes were recorded. In Outlast 2, the main character is also a journalist, a cameraman named Blake, who makes his way with a video camera in hand through the gloomy Arizona wilderness, forests, cornfields, swamps and half-abandoned villages.

He flew here with his wife Lynn to investigate the mysterious and nightmarish murder of a pregnant woman. The helicopter crashed, but they survived, although, given the subsequent events, it would be time to regret it. It is better to die quickly and almost painlessly than to endure this in Outlast 2.

Survival in Madness

There are no infernal monsters or special mysticism in the plot, as in the first part. There, we were opposed by psychos from the hospital, and here – religious fanatics and cultists who have gone crazy to Outlast 2. They are divided into groups that are at odds with each other and believe in different gods. And Blake is perceived differently: some – as a messenger of the devil, others – as a messiah and almost a new Christ. But this does not make it easier for us – both want Blake dead. Like, as the son of God, he must also be crucified to save us.

In general, complete schizoid darkness. And in the midst of this darkness, perversions and religious cults, we need to somehow survive in order to get to Lynn, who was kidnapped by fanatics in Outlast 2.

This straightforwardness of the plot is somewhat complicated by two factors. Firstly, Lynn also turned out to be pregnant, to Blake’s great surprise. Secondly, he himself is periodically visited by strange flashbacks in which he, as a teenager, wanders around his school and communicates with a classmate, and then she tragically dies before his eyes. How is all this connected with the real nightmarish events? Even the ending does not really give an answer to this question, leaving room for interpretation and the basis for plot additions.

Gameplay and dead books

Like the original, the sequel relies exclusively on naturalism and the naked instinct of self-preservation in Outlast 2. The task is practically one – to survive, run, get to, crawl to the exit from this hell. Hence the name of the game – Outlast, that is, to stretch out, hold out, survive. Accordingly, unlike many horrors, there are no special riddles, philosophical reflections and a leisurely, verified atmosphere of gradually increasing tension. We are immediately “dipped face-first” into this enveloping nightmare and are forced to nervously, with squeals and curses, run away from enemies or hide from them for most of the game – in closets, in barrels, under beds and even under water, holding our breath.

And all because fighting them is useless. Like the hero of the first part, Blake cannot pick up any weapons, and he is killed quickly and cruelly – literally with a couple of blows in Outlast 2.

Riddles: physical exercises

During this crazy chase, as before, you can jump, dodge, barricade doors by moving some object towards them or locking them with a bolt. Sometimes we move heavy boxes to get somewhere higher, or, for example, move the projector so as to correctly connect children’s drawings with a hanged man on the screen. However, there are few puzzles in the game, and the quest part is mainly limited to collecting notes, batteries for the camera and bandages, filming especially important places and scenes in Outlast 2.

Things still get to simple physical puzzles – for example, when you need to find a hook, attach it to the grate and, pulling the chain, manage to open it and slip through before Blake is caught by a scary old woman with a cross-shaped scythe.

The authors achieve the desired effect: the whole way we feel like a cornered victim who runs, jumps over obstacles, clings to ledges and pulls himself up, crawls through some corn fields and dirty floors, closes the door behind himself with screams and curses or quietly hides and prays for only one thing – that these nutcases with flashlights and axes do not notice, pass by, and we slip away further. This effect would not be so strong without a video camera. This is not just an analogue of a flashlight – the night vision mode has to be used almost constantly, and the picture acquires a particularly sinister, “Olya-Blair Witch” coloring. And the batteries die at a crazy speed. Sometimes we have to run, hide, scream and curse, looking at the surrounding horrors through some kind of interference and stains that appear in the camera. And you can also turn on the microphone to hear the crazy screams and speeches of the cultists when you hover. It turned out very realistic, nervous and atmospheric in the perfect game Outlast 2.

Variety: repetition is the mother of learning

Of course, not everyone will “produce bricks” in batches while playing Outlast 2. For some, many of the techniques after the first part will seem too familiar and predictable. We know that right now someone will scream terribly, and we will have to run away as fast as we can. So you just wait for the next screamer and run, figuring out where to turn, what to do and how to hide, cursing the developers for repeating.

And the scary granny with an inverted cross, with which she kills with one blow, haunts Blake the entire game. As a result, you are no longer afraid of her, but hate her. And often you don’t want to dive into the atmosphere, hide in barrels or under water, watch where the maniacs are going, but just run to the next plot trigger with full-length screams of “go to hell” so that the story can move forward as quickly as possible. However, such a perception in Outlast 2, of course, depends on your experience playing horror games and watching horror films. And to be fair, the game still knows how and what to scare even experienced veterans of the horror movement. It’s just that ideally there could be more of such moments, and fewer repetitions.

Graphics and sound: real nightmares

Realistic to the fullest extent of interest Outlast 2, well-optimized picture contributes to the immersion in the dark, frightening atmosphere of the game. Although it is very dark here most of the time, you can see detailed character models, glowy landscapes, high-quality detailing in the rooms, and realistic special effects from fire or water. Fans were surprised when they heard the news that the developers had decided not to use Unreal Engine 4, instead opting for a modified version of 3.5. This decision has serious implications, as players should not expect extravagant effects or improved graphics in Outlast 2, which may leave some disappointed.

One of the major downsides to the visuals is the animation quality, which does not live up to expectations. Many character actions, such as picking up batteries, are simply recycled from the first game, lacking the fresh feel that players may have hoped for. In addition, the overall animation and character design leave much to be desired. This leads to face-to-face moments that not only evoke primal fear, but also leave players disappointed with the developers’ choices. The level of detail and gameplay remains largely at the level of the original game released four years ago.

And, of course, Red Barrels has once again done a great job with the sound, which traditionally plays a huge role in horrors. All these whispers and screams, squeals, moans and wails of crazy cultists, and even amplified through the camera microphone, constantly surround the player and get on his nerves. Especially if you play at night, in the dark and with headphones. Of course, one could criticize the authors for the fact that many of the techniques from the first part have become boring, the screamers are too predictable, the school flashbacks seem drawn out, and the plot about yet another religious cult and sacrifices in the countryside is too banal. And the gameplay in its mechanics is quite monotonous and primitive. But believe me, when in the best moments of the game you hide in horror under the bed or rush wherever your eyes look with the camera at the ready, realizing with horror that the battery is about to die, there is absolutely no time to think about it. And there is no need.

Outlast 2 verdict on the pros and cons of the game

VPEsports gave this game a 7.5, which is above average. It is the best pseudo-horror chase simulator designed specifically for an adult audience. With the help of unusual properties, disturbing grotesque situations and an interesting plot, players will plunge into the atmosphere of endless attempts to escape from ruthless, unkillable monsters. Unfortunately, although the game offers the best emotions, it is perceived as a one-time adventure that does not encourage repeated playthroughs.
