Moreover, with a stroke of luck, you might even witness the emergence of a royal piano, which will promptly begin to reign over the area: constructing its magnificent castle and bravely standing up to the villains that threaten its realm. Why all this? That’s the enchantment of games from that time—simply because the creators felt inspired and wanted to explore the limitless possibilities of their imaginations.

While it’s a charming concept to invite kids to sing a song about children for a game made for them, the actual execution could be quite challenging. It might require a significant amount of patience and tolerance from your ears to appreciate the outcome. Nevertheless, “Dreams Dreams” offers a rich variety of renditions throughout the game and its festive DLC.

I’m referring to OverClocked ReMix, who launched a themed album of arrangements titled “NiGHTS: Lucid Dreaming.” While “arrangements” might not be the best term, it reflects their creative spirit. The tracks are sometimes so transformed in terms of instrumentation and harmony that the original pieces are barely recognizable. On the bright side, OCR finally nailed the sound, focusing much more on vocal mixing and instrument choices, which really enhances the overall listening experience. The genre selections can be quite peculiar—I still can’t grasp why the battle theme against Wiseman was reimagined as an opera piece. However, no one promised a verbatim recreation of the music we’ve already heard in the game, and OCR has always excelled in their innovative takes on covers. They push boundaries and surprise listeners, which is part of their charm. Plus, if you were hoping for more versions of the “Dreams Dreams” theme in the official soundtracks (just in case), the talented team at OverClocked ReMix has plenty more to offer, ensuring there’s something for every fan. Their dedication truly shines through in this project, making it a noteworthy contribution to the NiGHTS legacy.

Will there be an addition?

On that note, it would indeed be fitting to conclude the tale; however, the realm of NiGHTS stretches far beyond just a single game for the Sega Saturn and even extends outside the gaming industry itself. We’ve merely opened the door a crack to a much larger universe. By 1996, a beautifully crafted storybook was released exclusively in Japan, adding a delightful hint of narrative and character interaction to the dreamscape. Yet, it’s not solely the story that enchants readers. With exquisite illustrations by the talented Takumi Miyake, the book stands as a true work of visual art, captivating anyone who appreciates the beauty of illustration. As for the narrative itself, the storybook narrates the enchanting adventures of Elliott in the dream world and his earnest attempts to forge a connection with the mischievous jester, whose antics often lead to both trouble and laughter.

Indeed, the author Kyoko Inukai has made a commendable effort to delve deeper into the character of Knights. His playful and bold personality in the game was often only hinted at and subtly visualized during moments when he was trapped in his prison, twisting and making faces at the dreamers. However, in the narrative, his inflated ego and intense self-absorption run parallel to the classic tale of courage battling against the forces of evil. Overall, it’s a charming fairy tale that I would wholeheartedly recommend to children for their enjoyment—whether through the engaging text or the stunning illustrations that effortlessly transport them into the magical and whimsical realm of Naitopia. Plus, the English translation of this delightful story can be easily found online.

These comics embody the quintessential essence of Archie from the 1990s, overflowing with their trademark absurdity and surreal charm—perfectly tailored for a whimsical tale featuring two teenagers and a mischievous harlequin exploring a dream world. But when it comes to the story itself… What’s particularly interesting is that the creators of the comic decided to logically connect and structure the intricate, often elusive plot of the original game. They took a bold approach by starting the narrative from the very beginning, beginning with a medieval blacksmith who one day glimpsed the bridge between the dream realm and waking life. At the very spot where two red Ideas collided, he established the town of Twin Seeds, which would become the backdrop for all the subsequent adventures that unfold. It’s somewhat puzzling why they felt compelled to indulge in so many puns and one-liners, but perhaps this was simply a reflection of the comic format and the specific cultural context of the time when it was published.

The comic shifts its focus to the real world where the characters exist, providing a deeper exploration of their lives. We observe Elliot’s daily challenges and confrontations with bullies, while Clarice’s singing lessons unfold under the watchful and authoritarian eye of her instructor. This approach allows us to delve into how the realities of their lives profoundly shape the dreamers’ experiences. However, the Archies wouldn’t truly represent their essence if they didn’t occasionally take things to an exaggerated level. For a comic inspired by a dream-centric game, it is surprising that there is relatively little emphasis on actual dream sequences, particularly concerning their visual representation on the page. The Knights make an effort to highlight these dream elements during their appearances, yet they clearly struggle to carry this aspect alone. As the narrative progresses, it transitions from a fairy tale rich in interpretive possibilities to a more structured realm of adventurous fantasy that involves navigating between various layers of reality. The main connectors between readers and the characters are two Nightopians, who play a crucial role in both propelling the story forward and shedding light on the unfolding events. Their presence is essential; without their guidance, deciphering the intricate web of the local narrative would indeed be quite challenging.

For example, Nights has learned not merely to blend with dreamers into a singular entity but to actually swap bodies with them in a profound way. While Elliot battles fiercely for the realm of dreams, donning the guise of a flying harlequin, Nights relishes the experience of living in Elliot’s form, discovering the nuances of his life. The creators also equipped the main antagonist, Real, with a similar ability, allowing him to “befriend” Roger—a high schooler who once ruined Elliot’s day on the basketball court with his arrogance and brashness.

In this intriguing narrative, the Red Ideas, in this fresh take, effectively consolidate all other Ideas and function as a cohesive unit, creating a fascinating dynamic. Despite the comic being filled with moments of such overwhelming cringe that it might make you want to toss it out the window (after printing it, of course, since it hasn’t been reissued and thus holds a certain collectible value), I must commend the creators. They not only engaged deeply with the game but also clearly developed a genuine affection for it. Their dedication shines through as they strive to maintain high standards, ensuring that the spirit of the original material is honored while bringing their own unique flair to the project.

Yet, all of the above applies solely to the initial three issues. The subsequent chapters were taken over by new writers and artists, and they created such a jumble that it’s far better to ignore it than to even attempt to engage with it. It’s not merely that the art style has plummeted to new lows or that the storyline has entirely left Nightopia, severing its once meaningful ties to fairy tales. The real problem is that reading these later issues might make you lose all sense of what you’re following. While the original creators at least made an effort to stick to a consistent path, from the fourth issue onward, it’s complete narrative chaos—something that could easily be submitted to a standards board as a prime example of a disastrous adaptation. Instead of the whimsical adventures fans loved, we’re met with terrorists, police investigations, and explosions. Is this genuinely NiGHTS into Dreams? It feels like a betrayal of what made the original so enchanting. Let’s just act as if there are only three issues worth remembering.

At this stage, the creative spark associated with the game began to wane, leading to Knights evolving into a cameo character. He delighted fans with brief yet memorable visits to various Sega worlds, providing a nostalgic touch. Naturally, this wasn’t the conclusion of his story, but rather a pause in an ongoing journey.
