NBA 2K20 is a powerhouse on the court, with a presentation that truly captures the reality of professional basketball. Improved movement, dribbling, and player space add to the already solid foundation of the game. However, outside of the incredibly well-crafted story mode, the game loses focus elsewhere. While NBA 2K20 does a great job of recreating the pro style of play, there are microtransaction opportunities at almost every turn, and complex modes like MyLeague get very little attention.

The first thing I noticed about NBA 2K20 was the overall intuitiveness of the controls. While the learning curve is still a bit steep, it’s a lot easier to get the hang of. The new “2KU” mode, an optional tutorial module, was incredibly useful and took less than an hour to complete. A controller appears on the screen that mimics the movements of the skills you need, making it easy to copy. Once I successfully mastered a skill, like the eurostep to the basket, I could continue at my own pace. This allowed me to revisit skills I had forgotten from the previous year and try moves I had previously failed at.

NBA 2K20: An In-Depth Experience on the Court

NBA 2K20 continues the franchise’s tradition of stunning presentation. Players are crafted with incredible attention to detail to closely resemble their real-life counterparts, and a new range of apparel highlights the NBA’s style. While both players and commentators can sometimes seem soulless, it’s not as noticeable against the backdrop of carefully crafted elements, from the sneakers to the court surface. I also noted some awkward pauses during interviews between David Aldridge and the players, which is a stark contrast to the fluid commentary style of professionals like Kevin Harlan, Greg Anthony, Chris Weber, Doris Burke, and others. NBA 2K20’s impressive audiovisual package is quickly approaching the level of television coverage, which is a real achievement.

While the NBA 2K franchise has always been good at making each player unique, this new level of control skill helps to unlock their potential. Pulling off a shot with James Harden or passing with Eric Bledsoe is a real pleasure, and the improved defensive AI makes the game even more exciting. Defenders have become better at dealing with fast players, especially on fast breaks, using strategies like the “wall” to force opponents to shoot under pressure. The ability to decide when to shoot and when to attack the basket adds a new level of tension and strategy.

This aspect is reinforced by the badge system, which gives players unique abilities that can’t always be measured by traditional stats like speed or strength. For example, the “Pogo Stick” badge allows players like Anthony Davis to quickly recover from a blocked shot, making it easier to block multiple shots in a row. Another interesting badge is the “Worm”, which helps players better pass through opponents when rebounding. There are about 80 of them in total, and it’s hard to overstate their impact on the game.

But the best new feature in NBA 2K20 is the improved dribbling system. Instead of pre-made animations that captivate the player while dribbling, every success and failure while in possession of the ball feels like an achievement. Even a simple transfer of the ball from one hand to the other is satisfying, especially when it’s followed by a devastating crossover from Kyrie Irving. Since we spend a large part of the game watching players with the ball, the new dribbling animations make everything even more exciting. Watching Giannis sprint around the court, taking long strides, is as impressive as you’d expect. The pursuit of skill is the best part of NBA 2K20, and the dribbling mechanic is the clearest example of this.

NBA 2K20: Achievements and Challenges in Light of the Legacy

Unfortunately, many of the franchise’s historical problems remain unresolved, and some of the new flaws only exacerbate the situation. The AI ​​rarely shows the necessary urgency, ignoring simple 2-on-1 opportunities and stalling even when losing late in the game. Sometimes the computer simply goes out of bounds for no apparent reason. Worst of all, players who score multiple points in a row are often subjected to excessive double-guarding – the idea is good, because you need to react to “hot” players, but it often happens too early and too easily.

The improvements to the gameplay are especially noticeable in the new WNBA mode. The space on the court feels very good, which is key to recreating the differences between the men’s and women’s games. This leads to better movement without the ball and overall smoother gameplay. The animations look almost unique to the league, which helps to distinguish it from the NBA. It may be new, as you’re playing with stars like Candice Parker and Liz Cambage, but the feel is completely new. However, the WNBA mode is not without its problems, most notably the lackluster commentary team of Blake Zuniga, Tim Swartz, and Brian Banifatemi.

While it’s nice that the trio is completely separate from the NBA commentators, it would have been great to have Doris Burke or Pam Ward join. Overall, the team isn’t bad, but it’s hard to switch away from the NBA’s impeccable presentation. Additionally, the WNBA mode isn’t available for online play, which is a big drawback, as the league is ideally suited to competing with other players.  However, NBA 2K20 does offer a WNBA Season Mode, which provides some depth, although it doesn’t quite reach the level of the NBA’s much more advanced MyLeague.

Speaking of MyLeague, it’s received very few improvements in 2K20. It’s one of the few modes that hasn’t been microtransaction-free. MyLeague is so close to feature completion that it would be easier to ignore the lack of improvements, like the inability to sign and trade players, if it weren’t for some significant issues. Some usability changes, like the ability to force a win or loss during simulations, have been made, but it’s clear that MyLeague hasn’t received the attention it deserves. Unfortunately, it’s largely ignored in favor of the casino-like MyTeam, which brings a number of complex issues to NBA 2K20.

MyTeam and MyCareer: The Dual World of NBA 2K20

The best part about MyTeam is also the worst part: it’s full of challenges. It’s clear from the start that the main goal of this mode is to extract as much money as possible from me, rather than making me grind through boring challenges. I found myself uninterested in completing challenges with a team of weak players, and the “premium” pack costs anywhere from $5 to $10, and even then there’s no guarantee that I’ll get anything worthwhile. To top it all off, the interface of the mode feels like a casino, with a soulless roulette wheel that randomly stops at a prize. The only positive is the sound of the cards being revealed, which only reminds me of how much more fun it is to collect cards in real life than in MyTeam.

Not all of the available game modes are disappointing, though. The MyCareer “When The Lights Are Brightest” story mode is the best release for NBA 2K to date. It starts with a brand new character editor that opens up a ton of possibilities. I created a tall, defensive forward, but the variety of options makes it tempting to create new characters in the future. MyCareer also has a new and improved badge system, allowing me to avoid the mindless grind of earning specific badges by choosing them myself.

While not of a high standard, the script in this year’s version is impressively witty and beautifully executed by an all-star cast that includes Idris Elba, Rosario Dawson, and Thomas Middleditch. The story follows Che (played by Derrick Augustine), a college student preparing for the NBA draft. On the eve of graduation, Che skips his last game in protest of his friend being cut from his scholarship due to injury. This leads to some interesting consequences, such as Che’s relationship with his coach (Elba) becoming strained.

“Lights” thankfully bypasses most of the dull and pointless moments in favor of a more cinematic experience. The story is only four to five hours long, but it raises interesting questions about sports, such as the manipulation of college athletes and the transience of an NBA player’s career. It never lingers too long, and whenever the story slows down, it picks up speed again. Several fun gameplay options, such as participating in NBA draft mini-games, help to establish “When The Lights Are Brightest” as a new standard for story modes in sports video games.

MyCareer in NBA 2K20: Risks Challenges and Victories

Unfortunately, microtransactions are just as prevalent in MyCareer as they are in other modes. Even playing the Legend Edition, which comes with a whopping 100,000 virtual currency (the equivalent of about $25), I was only able to boost my player to an overall rating of 82. Playing MyCareer while practicing and playing Summer League matches with a character with significantly lower stats would have been a real challenge. However, given the improvements I saw in player attribute levels, it’s a significant step up from last year — even if it’s not a huge achievement. One nice change is that you can now test out different character builds before you start, which reduces the risk of making mistakes and spending a lot of time trying to achieve results only to find out that your chosen archetype doesn’t fit.

When I played online, NBA 2K20 was quite successful in the player-versus-player mode. The game punishes arcade-style gameplay and rewards strategic play, focusing on your team’s strengths. Even in matches where my opponent clearly didn’t have a stable connection, lag was minimal, though noticeable—especially given the precision of the controls. All that time spent in 2KU really paid off, as it was easy to spot players who weren’t taking the time to learn the nuances of the game. Defeating online opponents became even more fun.

It’s worth noting that while I’ve only encountered minor inconveniences in online play, other players have reported numerous issues, such as random disconnections, crashes, and other online bugs. 2K is working on fixing these issues, but at the time of writing this review, they are still ongoing. This is a concern, as having a stable connection is essential to enjoying the game without interruption.

It’s important to note that microtransactions can have a significant impact on the overall gaming experience. Many players feel compelled to spend real money to reach a certain level or gain desired attributes, which can turn off those who simply want to enjoy the game without additional costs. This turns gameplay into a kind of gambling, where the true enjoyment of the game can be clouded by the desire to gain an advantage through financial infusions.

MyTeam is still tied to microtransactions, and this spoils the impression a little. To assemble a top team, you will either have to spend a lot of time or fork out a lot of money.

This is an unpleasant moment, especially when you just want to enjoy the game and not think about donations. But MyLeague could get more updates – the mode lacks fresh ideas. But even with these drawbacks, NBA 2K20 is the best basketball simulator. The realism is amazing: the players’ movements, their reactions, animations – everything looks so natural that sometimes you forget that this is a game. The controls are precise, the physics are cool, and each game feels like a real match that you can watch and experience, like a real broadcast.

And the coolest thing is the opportunities that NBA 2K20 gives. You can become a star, play for your favorite team, measure your strength with friends or write your own basketball story. This game is not just about sports – it is about passion, emotions and the dream of being on top.
