MiSide Review by VpeSports

If you want to enjoy MiSide without spoilers, just know that this game is amazing and you should definitely play it! Don’t waste time, just dive into this amazing experience! At first glance, MiSide may seem skeptical – after all, it seems like a regular dating sim, where everything is not as simple as it seems. The name, consonant with the last syllables of the word “murder”, already sets a dark mood. Many will immediately remember Doki Doki Literature Club, which became a landmark in this genre.

Doki Doki Literature Club, famous and often criticized, is far from the first of its kind. It draws inspiration from various games, most notably from “You and Me and Her”, a visual novel where the player’s actions turn against him. Here, you witness a horrific event when your girlfriend from previous routes sees you romancing another character and experiences betrayal.

System Requirements for MiSide

Doki Doki Literature Club takes this concept – a cute game that turns into a nightmare when self-aware characters begin to realize their nature and their feelings. Monka, one of four romanceable girls, strives to become more than just a 2D creature trapped within the confines of computer code. Her thirst for love and understanding extends beyond her limited world, and this gives the game a deep philosophical meaning.

MiSide continues this tradition, but offers a unique interpretation, filling the story with new colors and emotions. As you play, you will encounter unexpected plot twists and deep questions about love, betrayal, and self-identity. This is not just a game – it is truly a journey worth taking. Why wait? Dive into MiSide and discover its secrets!

Delving into the MiSide Metanarrative

In the final moments of Doki Doki Literature Club, Monka addresses you by your real name, the one you set in your computer settings. This moment makes you realize that you need to open the game folder and delete her character file to end this madness. She begs you to stop, and you watch as her code slowly disappears before your eyes, along with the deletion indicator. Monka is gone forever. Over the credits, you hear the question, “Can you hear me?” – the only time the game has a voice. She sings one last, bittersweet song based on the game’s main theme, complaining about how she can’t make you love her. And finally, she concludes, “If I don’t know how to love you, then I’ll leave you alone.” The game then corrupts itself, and to play it again, you’ll need to redownload it, restoring Monka to the game files.

Humor and Horror in Perfect Combination

That is, until Doki Doki Literature Club Plus came out! This version can’t use your computer’s file system because it has to be sold on the Switch. Instead, all file interactions have been replaced with an in-game overlay menu. While this was meant to preserve the spirit of the original, these changes dilute the effect and make it less special. Dan Salvato, I understand that you want to make money from your work, but you need to learn to respect your art, which, by the way, borrows a lot of ideas from other games!

  1. Monka calls you by your real name.
  2. You need to delete her character file to complete the game.
  3. Monka’s code slowly disappears before your eyes.
  4. The game ends with a song about love and loneliness.
  5. Doki Doki Literature Club Plus changes the interaction with files.
  6. The changes in Plus reduce the original effect.
  7. MiSide promises to surprise in 2024!

Now that you know how “You and Me and Her” and DDLC use metanarrative and the genre tropes of “cute girls doing cute things” (until it turns out not to be cute), you as a potential player are ready for a new adventure. It’s time to move on to MiSide, the latest representative of this unique genre that promises to surprise and amaze in 2024.

Expectations Turned Upside Down

The great thing about MiSide is that it already knows your expectations. It knows why you’re here and how you relate to games like Doki Doki Literature Club. MiSide invites you to draw parallels, only to suddenly tear them apart, like a knife stabbing an anime girl in the neck. And it does so with passion and playfulness.

It all starts with you, a withdrawn nerd who wakes up every morning, works on his computer, and goes to bed without leaving his room. Soon, your mobile app, a waifu simulator, gets an update that you can’t ignore. We’re quickly introduced to Mita, the semi-title character of MiSide. You help her complete idle game-style tasks, and she suddenly announces that she’d like to meet you in real life. Then she stops and announces that she has an idea. The camera slowly zooms in on her, and she begins to rejoice at her success. You put your phone down and realize that you are no longer in your room, but in an apartment that is strikingly similar to her world, which you have only seen from above.

Journey into a Unique World of Fun and Horror

You soon meet her in reality (or rather, in the third dimension) and discover that she has somehow transported you to her world. Now you live in a game where the logic of the game replaces the logic of the real world – and your character anxiously shares her experiences. After a short time of living together, you become increasingly suspicious of Mitya and her house. You find a collection of cartridges with the names of other guys, she gives you pills for a virtual illness and closes your eyes while you take them. The knocking from her closet becomes louder and more intrusive. When you ask her about it, she sighs and laments her inability to entertain you: “This again…”

You go down to her basement and find… Mitya, locked in a cage. She looks different: she has a different hairstyle and speaks to you differently, offering to help you escape. At this point, MiSide starts showing her cards. Another Mita enters with a kitchen knife in her hands, and a scene begins where she reproaches the locked Mita. You need to move carefully around the room to avoid being seen and becoming a victim.

Humor and Horror in Perfect Combination

Through a thrilling journey through strange, liminal spaces that seem endless and intertwine with each other, you gradually discover the world of MiSide. As Mita said, you are inside the game, but not just one version of it. MiSide uses version control language to explain that you need to move between different versions of the game to uncover the truth about the force haunting you, called “Crazy Mita” by other Mitas. Each version of the game has multiple instances of the app, each containing its own Mita with unique personality traits.

Delving into the MiSide Metanarrative

What sets MiSide apart from other games in the genre is the central concept: you meet many other Mitas. And they are all incredibly charming. MiSide cleverly pauses the tense horror scenes to bring the necessary lightness into the game. You meet different Mitas who help (or hinder) you in one way or another. The Mita you freed from Crazy Mita’s basement is called Good Mita. She accompanies you on your journey through the different versions and quickly introduces you to Cool Mita, or Cappy as she’s known. She’s known for wearing a cap and gloves! Good Mita invites you to hang out while she hatches a plan, and spending time with Cappy is incredibly fun. She’s energetic, playful, and even offers to play a Dance Dance Revolution-style minigame where you can only win by a tie at best. She’s just happy you’re here.

Comedy and horror are a powerful combination, as Lethal Company’s successful execution of the formula shows: have fun with your friends until you hear sounds that just shouldn’t exist in the dark. You learn, adapt, and sometimes die anyway before you can get back to the moments where you can have fun with your friends. MiSide achieves a similar balance, complementing the horror with moments of comedy that work well. Comedy is hard, and it’s easy to do it poorly, just like horror. However, the comedy in MiSide is impeccably written, even with some translation errors. The writing is not only funny, but also has the reflective meta-commentary you’d expect from a game like this. Each of the Meets you meet grows attached to you in a short amount of time, even if some are initially hostile.

  • Travel through strange liminal spaces.
  • You are in different versions of the game with unique Mitas.
  • Each Mita has its own charm.
  • Kind Mita helps you on your journey.
  • Kappi offers to play a mini-game.
  • Comedy and horror are harmoniously intertwined.
  • MiSide asks a question about life in a video game.

Expectations Turned Upside Down

Games like You and Me and Her and DDLC are very serious. They don’t allow you to enjoy the world you’re in and demand a lot of emotion. MiSide excels in its comedic moments, but it also takes elements of its predecessors and twists them into interesting plot twists. The second playthrough of DDLC (when it gets SCARY) uses the game’s bugs to emphasize the horror. If you encounter a “bug”, it’s because it’s meant to disturb you. In MiSide, bugs become a reality of game design, which highlights the need for version control. The bug will exist in the world, and the player, with technical knowledge, will be able to fix it to advance the story. DDLC uses the concept of a game about a game to explore existentialism, but MiSide asks the question: if our lives are so fundamentally broken and monotonous, wouldn’t you rather live in a video game?

Journey into a Unique World of Fun and Horror

MiSide takes you on an exciting journey through the game’s secret corners, inspired by games like The Stanley Parable and PT. The game uses a lot of 3D techniques to transform the world into something strange and non-linear. This is not Antichamber, where you have to solve complex logical puzzles in an open space. MiSide takes a more linear approach, but creates unforgettable scenes simply by the way you move from one place to another. Often, during these moments, you are not bothered by pursuits or frightening sounds – this gives you the opportunity to enjoy impressive views.

In addition, the world of MiSide is filled with various mini-games that diversify your gameplay. The wide range of games available in MiSide makes exploration unique. You never know what awaits you around the corner: in one scene, you are dancing in DDR with Cappy, and in the next, you are playing a DOOM clone. It feels like a portfolio of developers who are eager to experiment with different genres. This scope creates endless possibilities in MiSide. Plus, there are collectibles and costumes to unlock, encouraging you to explore the world with care, but not take everything too seriously. It’s just a game, after all. What could go wrong?

MiSide Review by VpeSports

MiSide is a game that aims to give you fun, breaking out of the usual DDLC mold and becoming something much more special and memorable. After playing horror games, I often lose sleep over them as my mind paints images of the most disturbing moments. For example, the scene in DDLC where you look at one of the girls’ dead bodies and can’t do anything is forever etched in my memory. Or the tension in Mouthwashing that leads to chaos violence ruined my sleep. But when I think back to moments from MiSide, including some truly terrifying scenes, I don’t remember fear, I remember joy: dancing with Cappie, the incredible tsundere Mila showing you her special sword skills, or the unexpected perspective shifts. MiSide may be scary and bloody, but more importantly, it wants you to remember how much fun you had.
