Doki Doki Literature Club, famous and often criticized, is far from the first of its kind. It draws inspiration from various games, most notably from “You and Me and Her”, a visual novel where the player’s actions turn against him. Here, you witness a horrific event when your girlfriend from previous routes sees you romancing another character and experiences betrayal.

The camera slowly zooms in on her, and she begins to rejoice at her success. You put your phone down and realize that you are no longer in your room, but in an apartment that is strikingly similar to her world, which you have only seen from above.

You soon meet her in reality (or rather, in the third dimension) and discover that she has somehow transported you to her world. Now you live in a game where the logic of the game replaces the logic of the real world – and your character anxiously shares her experiences. After a short time of living together, you become increasingly suspicious of Mitya and her house. You find a collection of cartridges with the names of other guys, she gives you pills for a virtual illness and closes your eyes while you take them. The knocking from her closet becomes louder and more intrusive. When you ask her about it, she sighs and laments her inability to entertain you: “This again…”

You go down to her basement and find… Mitya, locked in a cage. She looks different: she has a different hairstyle and speaks to you differently, offering to help you escape. She’s known for wearing a cap and gloves! Good Mita invites you to hang out while she hatches a plan, and spending time with Cappy is incredibly fun. She’s energetic, playful, and even offers to play a Dance Dance Revolution-style minigame where you can only win by a tie at best. She’s just happy you’re here.

Comedy and horror are a powerful combination, as Lethal Company’s successful execution of the formula shows: have fun with your friends until you hear sounds that just shouldn’t exist in the dark. You learn, adapt, and sometimes die anyway before you can get back to the moments where you can have fun with your friends. MiSide achieves a similar balance, complementing the horror with moments of comedy that work well. Comedy is hard, and it’s easy to do it poorly, just like horror. However, the comedy in MiSide is impeccably written, even with some translation errors. The writing is not only funny, but also has the reflective meta-commentary you’d expect from a game like this. Each of the Meets you meet grows attached to you in a short amount of time, even if some are initially hostile.

But when I think back to moments from MiSide, including some truly terrifying scenes, I don’t remember fear, I remember joy: dancing with Cappie, the incredible tsundere Mila showing you her special sword skills, or the unexpected perspective shifts. MiSide may be scary and bloody, but more importantly, it wants you to remember how much fun you had.
