And the developers of the remake had a difficult task – not just to revive the classics, but to convey that very spirit, to preserve the magic that touched both newcomers and veterans. The original Mafia, released in 2002 by the Czech studio Illusion Softworks, was a real discovery. It was the story of a simple taxi driver named Tommy Angelo, who accidentally found himself drawn into the world of organized crime – and off we went. All the familiar clichés from classic gangster films suddenly came together to form a coherent and incredibly exciting story about power, betrayal and the fine line between duty and personal principles.

The plot of “Mafia” was captivating not only due to the content, but also due to the form. For the first time, gamers were presented with a crime drama almost like a real movie – with strong dialogue, memorable characters and a production worthy of the big screen. This wasn’t just a “joker” about the mafia – it was an immersion into the era and destiny.

The remake – Mafia: Definitive Edition – from Hangar 13 studio carefully preserved the emotional nerve of the original. Moreover, with new technologies it sparkled with fresh colors. Inter-mission cutscenes now look not just cinematic – they can really compete with real films. The cameras catch the right angles, as if Tarantino himself was at the director’s console – lower plans, accents on looks, on details.

The characters’ faces come to life thanks to excellent animation, and the interiors in the style of glamorous 30s Chicago – with velvet chairs, soft light and a haze of cigar smoke – add visual magic. In places it seems that you are not watching a game, but an interactive film in the spirit of Scorsese. The characters have a character, motivation, emotions – you believe in them. True, the Russian dubbing was a bit disappointing, so it’s better to switch to the original voices right away – the atmosphere is revealed much more vividly there.

Why Mafia: Definitive Edition is still considered the benchmark for atmospheric remakes

Otherwise, fans of the original Mafia will definitely be in their element. The game’s story is still considered one of the best in the genre, and thanks to the modern production, it has become even stronger and more expressive. However, all this would not matter if between cutscenes we were waiting for boring and ragged gameplay. Fortunately, this is not the case. Lost Heaven is still addictive – here you just want to drive around the streets without a goal, enjoying the atmosphere.

The developers have provided the ability to skip trips that do not affect the plot, but I would not advise abusing this. Firstly, knowledge of the city can be very useful at higher difficulty levels – especially when the cops start following you. Secondly, it is simply beautiful. If the 2002 original now evokes only warm nostalgia, then the remake is a real visual feast. Gone are the angular models of cars and faceless buildings — now it’s a real city with architecture that you want to get stuck on. Some buildings make you want to walk around them, examine every ledge, every decorative detail.

Yes, the city essentially remains a backdrop, a theatrical set. But in the case of “Mafia”, this is only a plus. After all, the main thing here is history, atmosphere, the spirit of the era. And Lost Heaven conveys this mood flawlessly. And not only on the streets, but also inside the buildings: the same mission in the hotel gives you the opportunity to look into almost every room — and each of them is unique. In each you can notice individual details, for example:

• a neatly folded umbrella on the bed,
• books and newspapers on the coffee table,
• forgotten cups on the windowsill,
• ashtrays with smoking cigarette butts.

There are also rooms that you will only see briefly – for example, the shop of one of Salieri’s informants. Or maybe you will just pass by.

But they are still there – and they are made with meticulous love for detail. All this is reminiscent of the approach of Luchino Visconti, who, when filming “Feeling”, made the cabinets fill with antique furniture and clothes that no one would even see in the frame. Because the atmosphere is built from little things. And it is at this level that the world of Mafia: Definitive Edition is made. By the way, the soundtrack is also pleasing – although it is not Django Reinhardt, the music perfectly complements what is happening.

It seems like everything is familiar, but sometimes the lighting in the game produces such beautiful scenes that you just want to stop and take a screenshot.

Physics, vehicles and gunfights in Mafia: Definitive Edition – is it worth playing?

The atmosphere is atmosphere, but how does it play? Honestly, it’s very cool. As I already noted in the preview, the cars still feel alive: you feel the weight, inertia, and each model behaves in its own way. For example, the nimble Bolt, although it cannot boast of speed, has more than enough maneuverability – it can easily slip into an alley and escape from pursuit. You can hack a car the smart way – with a master key, or the quick way – break the glass and climb inside. The second method, of course, is easier, but there are more problems later: the police will clearly not be happy to see a stolen car and are unlikely to let you go in peace. However, outside of free mode, stealing cars is a rare pastime. When five patrolmen are rushing after you, there is no time for style. Moreover, most often the necessary transport will already be waiting in the garage. But motorcycles, which did not exist before, are worth mentioning separately. They even dedicated a separate mission to them — and for good reason. The controls are completely different: at first, you feel like you’re not on a bike, but on some kind of grav-cycle from the future.

Sometimes, though, the motorcycle physics are naughty: crash into a pole — and Tommy somehow ended up half in the textures. It’s funny, but it knocks you out of the immersion a little. The shooting here is also pleasing — the developers found a golden mean between casualness and hardcore. The arsenal is small: four pistols, a shotgun, a Thompson, a rifle with a sniper scope, a couple of cold toys, Molotov cocktails and grenades. But each barrel feels different. Even that tiny revolver, which was of little use before, now copes well with the pinpoint elimination of an enemy. The Thompson is ideal for clearing, the shotgun is a universal beast, and the rifle is the queen of long-range combat: one shot – one corpse, almost always.

In shootouts, you have to use your head: if you stick your head out from behind cover, you’ll immediately get punched in the face, and standing still is more expensive. Enemies throw cocktails and grenades, not letting you relax. Sometimes you can really feel the spirit of Gears of War, but all this is in a good way. Cheerful, tense, interesting.

Sometimes Mafia: Definitive Edition looks unexpectedly expensive – and that’s nice. Most of the time, it manages to maintain this level.

Is Mafia: Definitive Edition Worth Playing in 2025?

To be honest, not everything in the game turned out as smoothly as we would have liked. Stealth missions, for example, turned out to be rather crude: all the stealth gameplay comes down to running from one cover to another and knocking out enemies. No hiding in the shadows, no distracting the guards, no special tactics. Even the ability to drag bodies is practically unnecessary – patrols rarely intersect, and for some reason no one is embarrassed by the disappearance of a comrade right in front of everyone.

Close combat is even simpler. Opponents act according to a template, and the fights themselves look like two rag mannequins decided to push each other. Against the background of good shootouts, such fights look especially pale and do not cause any excitement.

The scenes of shooting from a car deserve a special mention. Forget about aiming – everything here is built on auto-aiming. Your task is to simply look at the road and hit the left mouse button. Add to this endless ammo, lightning-fast reloading (right behind the wheel!) and accuracy worthy of an Olympic champion – and you get a pure arcade. The moment in the mission “Country Walk” was especially memorable, where Tommy and his partners shoot back from a whole tail of police officers. This is no longer a crime noir, but some kind of B-category action movie.

And the final chord of the mission is a circus. An armored truck with a turret awaits you, and it seems that the author of this scene sincerely hates players. Confused controls, a jumping sight, a flying car – and all this against the background of a jerky chase. Surprisingly, this fragment is much more annoying than the notorious race from the original (which, by the way, I completed on the first try in the preview version). Fortunately, there is only one such wildness in the game – and it seems that Hangar 13 came to their senses in time.

Of course, there were some bugs, but everything was quite tolerable. A couple of freezes during loading, one stuck NPC, and one police car that flew into the stratosphere to some airship — all of this is more a reason to smile than to be seriously angry. But despite all the rough edges, the impressions of Mafia: Definitive Edition remained generally positive. The original today looks like a museum exhibit, and the remake is a great way to look at a familiar story in a new way. Especially for newcomers who are not spoiled by knowledge of the second and third parts (spoiler: this is a completely different story).

And veterans should give the project a chance. It is clear that the team has learned from the past and is trying to do better. We hope they will not let us down with the “four”. We already want to hear something like “Say hello to my little friend!” — preferably against the backdrop of palm trees, retro music and the bloody 80s. Mafia: Definitive Edition carefully treats the memories of the original. This is a modern, beautiful and high-quality game that will appeal to both old-timers and those who will get behind the wheel of a classic convertible for the first time in the fictional Lost Heaven.
