Life is Strange Review – Free Download on Steam

Life is Strange

Graphic adventure novels and interactive “movies” are very popular now. At first, we were pleased by Quantic Dream with its Fahrenheit and Heavy Rain, and Beyond: Two Souls. And then, thanks to Telltale Games, a lot of interactive series were released, each of which stood out in its own way, but they were all united by the developers’ signature style and excellent quality of execution. Even the developers of Dreamfall realized which way the wind was blowing and decided to follow in the footsteps of their successful colleagues from Telltale Games, introducing the already familiar elements of non-linearity and narrative features into the new Dreamfall. And now the next ones who decided to join the general fun were Square Enix, who kindly agreed to publish a fresh project from Don’t Nod Entertainment called Life is Strange, which we will talk about today.

The game greatly promoted the company Don’t Nod, which had previously created the original, but not very strong in financial terms Remember Me. In this way, the developers created Vampyr and Banishers, which was released quite recently.

Life is Strange review

But first, a little history. The guys from Don’t Nod are quite an ambitious bunch. In fact, they debuted with the cyberpunk project Remember Me. They did not lose face and clearly demonstrated that they can create an interesting setting, give birth to a cool idea, design all this joy and add cool music. Yes, let the game itself be rather passable from the gameplay side, but the eyes and ears rejoiced during the passage. Did they appreciate Remember Me as cyberpunk? Actually, they did. And in such a smooth, simple way we approach a detailed review of their new brainchild – Life is Strange. I will say right away that all the way Life is Strange will be compared with other games of the genre of interactive graphic novels, because everything is known in comparison.

When watching the first trailers, it was logical to expect the developers to truly copy the ideas of Telltale Games. It’s not that I didn’t believe in them, it’s just that after the Telltale Games series, a certain confidence took root in my head that nothing new can be invented in the genre of graphic adventure games. But when you launch Life is Strange, you immediately understand that the developers really took a creative approach to their project. The first thing that clearly catches your eye is not even the graphic component (everyone could already get acquainted with it at the stage of watching the first trailers), but the absence of Quick Time Events, to which we are so accustomed.

Life is Strange

No one will force you to frantically press the Q button or hysterically move the mouse on the mouse pad – all this action is not here at all. Rare collisions occur without our direct participation, and, oddly enough, the game has not lost anything from this. The dialogues are also implemented a little differently: there is no timer that rushes us with an answer, and the list of answer options is sometimes not as rich as in the same Walking Dead.

“And where is the creativity then?” – the inquisitive viewer will ask.

Max and Chloe Storyline: Friendship on the Edge of Darkness in Life is Strange

The main character of the game Life is Strange is a girl named Max, who lives a happy student life. Many do not see her other side, but only as an ordinary girl: shy, withdrawn and not particularly sociable. But she has mental talents: the ability to manipulate time itself, which gives her the ability to compensate for all the bad things that can happen around her. As you play, you learn that Max was once a very close friend of a girl named Chloe, but the two best friends have not spoken to each other for many years. After their reunion, it becomes clear that Chloe may have felt a change. After Max left, her beloved father died, and this darkness was somewhat eased by her friendship with Rachel, who helped her find the light again. tick life.

Her difficult life turns into a dark streak before her eyes. The city begins to experience fuss and strange events, in the epicenter of which Max and Chloe find themselves.

Life is Strange gameplay and characters

Along with walking around the locations, this is all the gameplay Life is Strange is limited to, but this is in no way a minus, because all this is directed at a very, very high level. And since we are considering, roughly speaking, an interactive movie, we cannot help but talk about such an important component as the plot. During the story, you play as a girl named Max, she is studying to be a photographer, and in some incomprehensible way, very epic visions and the superpower to control time fall on her. The rest of the details are worth finding out when you get to know the game directly.

The plot is very interesting and promising. Also, among other things, it is impossible not to note the excellent design of the locations. They are carefully designed, and the characters are well-written. Each of them has an individuality, and this is emphasized not only by the way they speak and dress, but even by the way their rooms, university, dormitory, and school locker look. Everything here is filled with small details that you can interact with. You can feel the history behind some objects in Life is Strange. The characters are alive, and you want to believe in them, even if sometimes the main character does not behave quite logically – but you forgive it. She is a hipster, what can you expect from her?

Hipsters, backgammon, punks, nerds – all the characters are equally interesting, not quite simple, and each has something to tell.

In the game, you’ll primarily wander around the map, solving various tasks that don’t require much intellectual involvement. We talk to different characters, make choices that sometimes feel bad, and watch a lot of cutscenes that show the full story.

Life is Strange gameplay train rides

This seems to be an example of a classic interactive movie that struggles to deliver a genuinely interesting game. The pacing often feels emotionless, and the lack of active tasks can leave players wanting more. In this case, the developers don’t even seem inclined to include interesting quick-time events or a couple of thought-provoking puzzles that could enhance the experience. While it’s hard to categorize this as a clear flaw, as some players may appreciate the narrative focus, it’s certainly worth highlighting as a strong flaw for those looking for more involvement in Life is Strange.

Life is Strange Pros and cons

Of course, the project has its cons, even if they are hidden behind a very impressive layer of powdered sugar. The main one is the graphics in Life is Strange. More precisely, it is both a plus and a minus.

On the one hand, we should thank the developers for the cartoonish, hand-drawn style (as Telltale Games do). But on the other hand, they could have used the resources of Unreal Engine 3 much better. It could have been better. The play of light and some weather effects are impressive in their naturalness, but the obscenely drawn panorama of the city, which we can see while standing near the lighthouse, and the sometimes strange animation of the characters are perceived as an eyesore. Overall, the few minuses of the project pale in comparison to its pluses, no matter how much we talk about them in Life is Strange.

What the project can really be praised for is the high-quality and perfectly selected music, thanks to which the atmosphere of the project becomes even more dense and viscous. The tracks are perfectly selected, and many of them will linger in my playlist for a very long time. And the fact that the main character plays the guitar brings back glorious nostalgic memories of Fahrenheit.
