Lethal Company is a cooperative horror game that was released in late 2023. The game managed to attract streamers from different countries, which greatly increased its popularity and distribution. In this article, we will talk about the achievements of the game, gameplay and graphics. It’s time to talk about the project and its improvements.

Gameplay of Lethal Company
At the very beginning of the game, you don’t really understand anything, and that’s okay. You have to learn right along the way, without much explanation. But, interestingly, this does not spoil the impression at all: the game is addictive due to the situations that it generates itself, plus your partners play a significant role.
By and large, there is no point in playing alone, except to understand the mechanics. There is no plot here either: we have a clean sandbox in front of us. The task is simple — to fly around the planets (here they are called “moons”) and loot local complexes resembling abandoned factories. According to lore, we are employees of a certain company (that’s what it’s called — “Company”), and we are given a few days to collect a certain amount of loot. Before the deadline, all this must be delivered to the reception point and sold. Then they give you a new task, and the loot bar gets higher. If he failed, he was fired. And literally: the character is simply thrown into outer space.

But collecting loot is not so easy. Enemies are constantly interfering — all kinds of monsters and creatures that roam not only inside the complexes, but also outside, next to the ship. Because of this, you can literally die at the very entrance. In addition, the death of each team member reduces the total percentage of profit from the sale, so the value of life here is especially felt.
And now we come to the main thing, which is why the players loved the project so much. The basis of local gameplay is teamwork. To survive and take out at least some prey, you need to work together: stick together, don’t stray and stay in touch all the time. Radio conversations become vital, because this is the only way to coordinate — to fight off monsters or to get away in time if the situation gets out of control in Lethal Company.

What fascinated me the most is the way the game, due to its inventory constraints, encourages players to adopt distinct roles within the team.
The roles our team was typically divided into were:
-
Hacker – Remains on the ship, vigilantly monitoring the crew’s movements, disabling traps, manning doors, and teleporting players out of dangerous situations. Their role is crucial to survival, but they are not always safe; monsters can invade the ship if a door is carelessly left unattended. The Hacker must find a way to balance their duties while remaining alert for lurking dangers.
-
Communicator – Carries the radio, diligently relaying important updates from the Hacker to the crew, organizing the opening of doors, and coordinating the disarming of traps. Their role is vital to maintaining communication, but their deaths pose a significant problem, as the radio will remain with their lifeless body, leaving the crew without vital information in dire moments.
-
Runner – Travels light to collect loot, and skillfully returns to the ship. They have the agility to move quickly through hostile environments, and can use the occasional teleporter to travel quickly. If monsters are hot on their heels, they will alert the Hacker to an emergency extraction (though sadly without any treasure). Their speed is crucial, and they often take risks.
-
Technician – Holds a set of essential tools, such as keys, a flashlight, and a folding ladder. They play a key role in supporting the team, facilitating access to difficult areas that others may have difficulty traversing. Their skills ensure that the team can constantly explore and find hidden resources without unnecessary delays.
-
Fighter – Bravely confronts smaller enemies using a shovel or a STOP sign. Larger threats require a Zap-Gun or flashbang to fend off more formidable enemies. This position is the riskiest in the group; weapons can be expensive to acquire, and some creatures are nearly impossible to eliminate, posing a constant danger to the Fighter.
The game has radars that show the players’ position in outer space, the location of loot and enemies. One of the players should preferably remain inside the ship and be the coordinator, telling how to behave in Lethal Company. But the radars do not always show correctly, so there are also some tricks and pitfalls here that make the game more interesting.

Graphic part of the game Lethal Company
The game has simple graphics, and one could say that it is generally limited in capabilities. But the procedural generation of the landscape and the complex itself are not detailed (rooms, loot, monsters are constantly changing) make each run unique. At first glance, the monsters in this game are not particularly frightening; in fact, they can be downright comical in their appearance. However, the alarm sounds they make an unmistakably signal their approach, creating emotions and unexpected situations. You can learn about the elements in the sections dedicated to gameplay and sound design.
The most important advantage of the graphics is the ability to significantly reduce technical requirements, making it accessible to a wider audience. The game weighs only 844 MB on Steam, you can download it in a matter of minutes in Lethal Company.

The weather in the game decides a lot: you can get to a familiar location on a familiar Moon, but the fog will be so thick that instead of entering the complex you will find a hole or a large reservoir of water, in which you will most likely die. You have to die here often – from enemies, unsuccessful falls into cliffs and abysses, both inside the complex and outside.
Although the flashlight simplifies the game, it can only be bought here, like other items. At the same time, it attracts monsters. There are many monsters in the game. We have not been everywhere and have not seen all of them. And in general, since life is valuable, you will most likely prefer to run away from the monster on the shifter than to look at it. But I counted quite a few: from small cockroach-like ones to huge colossuses that roam the street.

There is Voice Chat in Lethal Company, which works as a live communication: the further your partner goes from you, the worse you hear him. The trick is to talk in the game, and it is better not to communicate in the game through Discord (recommended). For this, the game has a walkie-talkie. Playing through the internal voice is much more interesting, this increases the value of the walkie-talkie. There is a risk that you simply won’t hear your partner, and the level of immersion increases significantly.
