Interestingly, it is this profound love that drives the prince, who bears the simple name Mirko, to embark on a daring quest to rescue his fiancée from the clutches of malevolent priests who have mysteriously abducted her. Mirko stands as the main character hailing from a quaint village—an essential figure who is both valuable and a bit temperamental, yet possesses a heart full of nobility. As you traverse his lengthy journey, which comprises approximately 20 thrilling missions, you will encounter an array of fascinating creatures and remarkable phenomena. Along the way, you will be supported by loyal knight companions, each one equally heroic and dedicated, adding depth to your adventure and enhancing the overall experience.

In the beta version of the game, there are three campaigns, each packed with meaningful content that has the potential to engage players. Unfortunately, despite a solid idea, the developers have struggled to fully bring it to life—navigating through the mindless chatter that’s present at every turn can be quite draining and detracts from the overall experience. Yet, this monotony might stem from the game still being a work in progress: in their infrequent interviews, the developers repeatedly express that their story will be engaging, if not flawless, which is something we’ve yet to see in practice. For now, we can only wait and hope that future updates will address these concerns and deliver a more captivating narrative.

Graphics

One of the most significant features that sets this game apart from its counterparts is its remarkable and robust 3D engine. This engine harnesses the latest innovations in 3D technology, employing intricate mathematical curves to render graphics. As a result, all game objects appear smooth and rounded, even under heavy zoom, rather than appearing blocky. This “blockiness” is a common drawback in many 3D games, including notable titles like Warcraft III. With this advanced engine, players can truly dive into a vibrant world filled with flowing rivers, melodious birds, and fantastical creatures that feel alive. Particular attention should also be given to the captivating day-night cycle, which is genuinely stunning. Each object at night, whether it’s a building or a tree, casts a uniquely precise shadow, creating a sense of realism that enhances immersion. The glow from street lamps along the pathways not only illuminates the surroundings but also adds a magical ambiance, making nighttime exploration a delight.

Yet, there are noticeable imperfections in the graphics, particularly the unfinished character animations: lumberjacks and archers move forward on straight legs, which gives them a rather clownish appearance. It’s important to acknowledge that the overall appearance of most characters resembles a childish cartoon plucked straight from the pages of comics. The monsters and dragons seem completely unthreatening and have a somewhat naively charming quality that doesn’t evoke fear. However, let’s remember that this game is distinct in its own right and doesn’t aim for the legendary status of iconic titles like Warcraft III or Age of Mythology, focusing instead on its unique style and approach.

Gameplay

The gameplay in KnightShift is notably distinctive, focusing heavily on an RPG system that the developers proudly claim to have balanced to perfection. Prince Mirko, who features in every campaign mission, is intended to take on a pivotal role in all quests, enhancing his combat experience, skills, and overall professionalism. Unfortunately, in the current beta version, this is not very apparent: Mirko feels just like any other soldier in the ranks. However, it’s crucial to remember that this is merely a beta version, and we hope that by the time the game launches, my concerns will be adequately addressed.

The developers have also dedicated considerable effort to shaping how each character is perceived within the game. Every character—from valiant knights to humorous cows—boasts their own unique names, making the world feel more alive and personalized. Furthermore, the knights are distinguished not only by their appearances but also by their distinctive voices, adding layers to their personalities and making each encounter memorable.

Another aspect that the developers promised but has yet to materialize in the current beta is the reliance on heroes. In theory, this game should evoke the spirit of Warcraft III, but in practice, as you journey through the campaigns, you will find yourself increasingly dependent on your heroes, often seeking their support to overcome challenges. In the initial three missions, you can manage to progress while keeping Mirko safely tucked away from wolves and monsters (which, by the way, are tougher than any other adversaries) at the edge of the screen. You can simply guide him to the mission’s conclusion without much trouble. However, as you advance further, it becomes utterly impossible to ignore the combat skills of Mirko and the other knight heroes.

The economic system in KnightShift is just as captivating: cows take on the primary and most significant role in the game. By grazing on the lush grass in the meadow, cows produce not only waste products that are also featured in the game but also a valuable economic asset—milk. The greater the number of cows and grass, the more milk is generated. Milk is the key resource in the game; all heroes and buildings in KnightShift are constructed using this essential resource specifically for children. Those who are accustomed to painstakingly extracting gold from mines and cutting down trees will find this utterly disarming “innovation” quite delightful and amusing. And rightly so. “Drink milk, kids—stay healthy,” seems to ring out on the screen as a charming reminder. Such is the promotion of milk throughout this whimsical game world.

Flaws

A major flaw in the game is its lack of races, nations, and various forms of diversity among the factions. It would have made much more sense to include at least two distinct races, yet this is, unfortunately, absent in both the beta and final versions. The rationale behind this choice remains completely unclear and fails to justify the developers’ decisions in any meaningful way. Another serious drawback is the limited range of abilities available to both units and heroes. Basic actions like “move,” the ambiguous “sleep” function, and “attack” constitute the standard toolkit for both lowly shepherds and high-cost mages alike. This lack of variety is disappointing for players seeking deeper gameplay. The only advancement in this regard comes from the cow, which can voluntarily offer itself for “milking.”

The rapid tempo of the game isn’t exactly a delight for dedicated hardcore gamers who crave depth. Enemies sprint in without warning, firing at the cows that are peacefully grazing in our lush meadow, and then they shift their aim to our allied shooters. As a result, our forces either carelessly collapse to the ground, breathing their last in a dramatic fashion (literally—the dying unit “releases” its soul before vanishing completely), or the enemy, having suffered significant losses with half their squad taken out, retreats on unsteady legs to regroup and gather a new army of puppets. Quite a captivating and chaotic scene, wouldn’t you say, fellow Warcraft fans?

Unfortunately, this feature isn’t included in the beta version, so I can’t confirm or refute the developers’ claims about its capabilities.

One of the strongest arguments in favor of KnightShift is its design for players of all ages. The game avoids any violent scenes and does not foster feelings of aggression. Instead, it creates an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a freshly told fairy tale, complete with a joyful conclusion. This makes it a perfect choice for both adults and children, allowing families to enjoy the experience together.

The gameplay is tranquil and steady; it won’t cause anxiety if you happen to miss capturing a gold mine or forget to “milk” a cow. A sense of calm prevails throughout the game, encouraging players to take their time and enjoy the journey. While it may struggle to compete with giants like Warcraft or C&C: Generals, KnightShift stands out as a somewhat youthful game crafted with impressive skill and attention to detail.
