Well, that moment has finally arrived — I’ve finally completed Kingdom Come: Deliverance from start to finish. For some, it may not sound like anything special, but for me, it was a real adventure. I can’t even believe that two years have passed since the day I first launched the game on release, inspired by the laudatory reviews and general delight. Back then, I was full of enthusiasm… which faded very quickly. My adventures ended right after the prologue — the game was cut off by terrible optimization: everything lagged, quests were buggy, graphics settings had a life of their own. In general, pleasure quickly turned to disappointment.

The main thing that makes you fall in love with the Czech RPG is the plot. Indro’s story is like a fantasy without magic, but with intrigue, sudden turns and moral dilemmas that give you goosebumps. It doesn’t rush you, but on the contrary, it constantly throws you off course, throwing up temptations and a reason to turn aside. All thanks to cinematic cutscenes and rich dialogues – you don’t just listen, but as if you are participating in an interactive drama, where every word can fire later. The developers did not spare time for details: even the most seemingly insignificant episode has several development paths. If you want to see everything, be prepared to replay the game more than once. Although at first Indro is slightly nudged in the right direction.
The game is not about grabbing everything in sight. Many tasks are limited in time, and if you take on too much, you can miss something important. Kingdom Come: Deliverance can’t be run through in a couple of evenings – the quests here require thoughtfulness. Sometimes, to advance, you need to reread old books, walk around every path and find out what you need from the locals – if, of course, they want to talk at all. It reminds me of Morrowind: no marker, only a couple of vague hints. But this is what spurs interest – each decision is worth its weight in gold, especially when you haven’t saved for a long time.
Although modders have made life easier by adding the ability to drink life-saving schnapps anywhere, is it worth going along with convenience? After all, half the fun is in the tension and consequences. The game deftly balances between the atmosphere of “The Name of the Rose” and the adventures of Reynevan. This is a story about people. About truth and lies. About power and weaknesses. Quests are presented through colorful characters, whom you quickly begin to perceive as old acquaintances. For example, Mr. Hanush – his appearance and character bring back memories of the Bloody Baron from the third “Witcher”. And Mr. Jan Ptacek? This dissolute aristocrat can charm anyone in no time.
And even the heroes of secondary lines do not remain cardboard. Everyone has their own pain, hopes, past. How can you refuse when the executioner from Rattay, with his stern appearance and emotional vulnerability, asks just to talk? Or when the priest, not averse to fun, discovers a comrade in you? Quests are rarely simple: they are multi-layered and lead to several ends of the world at once. Sometimes you do not immediately understand where and why. But this is good – they do not hold your hand. The world continues to live even without your participation: if you abandon a task, it can be completed without you. But the consequences are already your area of responsibility. One careless theft can make enemies for yourself in the whole district.

Yes, sometimes there are glitches in NPC behavior, and some important characters suddenly “forget” how you saved them, losing touch with previous quests. But if you play measuredly, without swallowing quests by the dozens, you will almost never encounter such bugs.
Immersion into the atmosphere: voice acting, music and detailing of the world in the game
It is pleasant to communicate with the characters in the game – in most cases, their lines sound lively and exciting. True, sometimes the peasants suddenly start talking as if they came straight from an English castle, which is a little out of place with the general Slavic entourage. In this regard, the German voice acting sounds much more organic – perhaps because Prussia was historically closely connected with Bohemia, and this is felt. The music is impeccable. Medieval orchestral compositions interspersed with Czech folk melodies instantly draw you into the atmosphere. Immersion is one hundred percent.
The game world is a separate pleasure. Everything around is detailed to the smallest detail: each resident is busy with their own affairs, everyone has a schedule, and it seems that you have ended up in a living village. But this system is fragile: as soon as a glitchy texture appears, NPCs can get stuck in a wall or five people try to occupy one bench.
The inventory is not endless – if, for example, you steal a nobleman’s armor, he will really go into battle naked. But looking at the surroundings is a real pleasure: the costumes look like they’re from a history museum, the castles and cathedrals are recreated with amazing accuracy, the forests are real thickets, in which it’s not cozy even during the day, and the nights are truly frighteningly dark. However, to enjoy all this beauty in full, you’ll need a powerful PC. Even on decent configurations, the game sometimes suffers: buildings and landscapes are loaded right before your eyes, and frequent loading before short scenes can spoil the impression. Sometimes you even start to wonder – is all this worth the money they ask for it.
Why Kingdom Come: Deliverance Is the Most Realistic Medieval RPG Ever
Gamers, seasoned in battles with griffins and accustomed to magic that decides everything in a couple of seconds, in Kingdom Come: Deliverance can feel like tourists thrown into a harsh medieval reality without a guide. Here, survival is not just a background mechanic, but a part of everyday life. Henry is not a witcher, not a hero of an ancient prophecy, but an ordinary guy whose eyes stick together if he does not sleep. If he does not eat, he loses consciousness. And having received a blow to the head with a sword and not bandaging the wound, he easily dies from blood loss right before your eyes – blood literally flows across the screen. You will not be able to fill your stomach with a strategic supply of food, as in the usual RPGs – everything that is in the inventory (here it is called “bag”) quickly spoils. And if you ate rotten food – expect poisoning with the corresponding consequences.
This “Tamagotchi effect” does not forgive frivolity and requires constant attention to detail. But it creates a special atmosphere – you don’t just play a knight, you live his life. That’s why the first-person perspective here is not just stylistic, but a necessity: this is the only way to feel the full weight of chain mail, the heat from the forge and the anxiety before a night foray into a forest full of bandits. The combat system itself is not spoiling either. The blows are aimed, combinations require practice, timing is more important than ever. The very first fight can end fatally, especially if there is more than one enemy. By the way, picking locks, especially on consoles, has become a separate quest – and not for the faint of heart. But the game rewards persistence: when you master the basic movements, you will begin to win not by luck, but by skill. Get good armor, weapons, pump up your combat skills – and those same bandits who previously seemed like a nightmare will become just another training session.
It is interesting that in many quests, combat can be avoided altogether. But no matter what anyone says, Kingdom Come is more interesting when you are in the thick of things. Hide and seek and stealth are, of course, good, but the real thrill comes when you master different types of weapons, choose combos for yourself, combine fighting styles. And other activities – like forging swords, playing dice or moving around the map – do not burden the game with unnecessary complexity. On the contrary, they add volume and liveliness to the game. I would like to draw special attention to the atmosphere of the world. Czech Bohemia is not just a decoration here, but an almost full-fledged character: villages with dirty streets, monasteries, fields with geese that fly apart as soon as you fly into them on horseback. These details show the developers’ love for the era. They did not just make a “game about the Middle Ages”, but recreated it with all the smells, fatigue, blood and everyday worries. The developers promise to expand the universe, and in the first story DLC, where you play as a girl, I want to believe that we will find even more interesting battles and colorful tasks.
However, it is impossible not to mention that the original, “raw” version of the game had enough bugs. And we are not talking only about small things – sometimes glitches broke entire quests, especially in large-scale battles. Sometimes you had to load the last saves several times to move on. Some of the problems were fixed by patches, but the scale of the promised battles still did not work out very well – there are literally three or four of them in the main plot. And about the night sorties behind enemy lines, which were so proud of in the promo videos, we also had to slightly forget: such missions occur at most a couple of times.
And yet, despite the rough edges, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a rare experience. The first couple of hours may seem difficult: incomprehensible combat, hunger, fatigue, some poisoning from rotten food… But a little time passes, you get used to it, get used to these rules and understand: this was the whole point. This is not just a game, but an attempt to show what the real Middle Ages could be like – without embellishments, magic and saving potions in your pocket. Yes, Kingdom Come throws up difficulties in places. Yes, it sometimes glitches. But if you are not looking for easy ways and want something fresh, atmospheric and honest – this project is worth your attention. And the bugs? Well, bugs will be cured. You can’t fake the atmosphere.
Pros:
- Quests that really require thinking
- Unusual, close to reality combat system
- Rich in detail and living world
- Sometimes bugs are a separate kind of fun
Cons:
- The game is not for those who like everything at once and without effort
- Loading and “fast” travel are not always pleasing in speed
- There are few large-scale battles here
- Bugs are common and in the most unexpected places
This is an atmospheric first-person RPG, in which a lively plot and fresh, unusually realistic combat easily leave many competitors behind. And yes, even despite the impressive set of bugs – it manages to be truly exciting.
