Four years later, Avalanche Studios is ready to amaze us again – or disappoint us?

This time, the competition is much tougher. Over the years, the open-world genre has made great strides. GTA 4 set the bar for realism, Red Faction: Guerrilla gave us total destructibility, Prototype surprised us with its crazy dynamics, and Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2 – with atmosphere and history. In such an environment, freedom of action alone is no longer enough to surprise. So what is Just Cause 2 going to really hook us with? Is it better than its predecessor, or will it once again be a project with “potential but no soul”?

The main thing in Just Cause 2 is not even the revolutionary ideas, but the feeling of complete freedom. The most interesting thing here is to fall. Speed ​​up in an SUV, fall off a cliff, break through a palm tree, crash into an oak tree, flip in the air, catch on a rock and roll head over heels in the mud. And at the last moment – spectacularly jump out of the car, open the parachute and fly off into the sunset. And you know, you don’t really want to do anything else. Just Cause 2 is a crazy action movie where in a minute and a half you can spectacularly blow up a helicopter, a motorboat, a water tower and an army of hapless enemies. This is an interactive hymn to stunts and acrobatics, a greeting from the action movies of the 80s, a challenge to all superheroes. The first part was a boring GTA clone with a plastic jungle and a couple of good ideas. The sequel turned into something truly impressive.

The story starts seriously. American agent Rico Rodriguez, aka Scorpio, and his partner Maria go to the island nation of Panau, lost somewhere in Southeast Asia. The country is ruled by Baby Panay, a tyrant, murderer, and dictator with a Napoleon complex who has covered the entire republic with his monuments and terrorizes the people. The goal is to overthrow the regime. And at the same time, deal with an old friend, Tom Sheldon, Rico’s former boss, who suddenly disappeared and seems to have betrayed the agency. Is he really a traitor, or are the bosses hiding something? There will be no answers right away – first you have to get caught up in a whirlwind of events. The main activity in the game is working for local groups. There are three of them: the Maoist revolutionaries “Reapers”, the Arab extremists “Ular Boys” and the criminal cartel “Cockroaches”. It would seem that their ideologies are different, but their goals are the same – to seize as much territory as possible, make money and eliminate competitors. And Rico is a master at this.

Each mission is a reason for chaos, stunts and fights. In addition to the usual arsenal, Rico has his signature harpoon cat. In the first part, it was inconvenient and rarely used, but now it has become the main tool. With its help, you can cling to any surface – from trees to skyscrapers, pull yourself up, launch yourself into the air and literally fly using a parachute. And also – intercept transport on the move: cling to a car, jump into the cabin, throw out the driver and rush on. If the car does not suit you, it is easy to jump onto a neighboring motorcycle or truck. This is what Just Cause 2 looks like: dynamic, crazy and damn fun.

Apocalypse Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow

Familiar tricks work in shootouts too. We mercilessly spray lead at soldiers from distant countries, throw snipers off towers with a grappling hook, fight off crowds of thugs, hanging on a sheer cliff. But the main thing is that this very hook allows you to work real miracles. For example, you can hang an enemy by his legs from the roof of a house, like a New Year’s decoration. Or firmly attach a speeding car to the nearest building – try to keep up with us now! And you can also attach an enraged partisan to a flying helicopter and wish him a safe flight.

In Just Cause 2 you feel like not just a cool mercenary, but a real superhero who can do anything. If you wanted, you could hijack a plane right during takeoff. Tired of shootouts? You can simply fly away, leaving your enemies perplexed. But if you’re in the mood for action, all you need to do is find a turret, rip a six-barreled machine gun off it, and start a real hell. Enemies fall to the ground in droves, everything around whistles and explodes, flimsy wooden huts crumble, palm trees fly into splinters, and reinforcements don’t even have time to get out of their green jeeps – they’re instantly burned by a fiery whirlwind. And when a giant “CHAOS” sign appears on the screen, you understand: everything is going as it should.

In Just Cause 2, causing chaos is not just possible – it’s the basis of the game. The entire island of Panau (35 thousand square kilometers of forests, deserts, and snow-capped mountain peaks) is dotted with villages, military bases, airports, and cities. It’s full of destructible objects: water towers, fuel tanks, statues of the dictator – all of this is just waiting to be blown up. In theory (although this is not shown in the game), by destroying such objects, we inspire local residents to revolt. For this, chaos points are awarded, which open access to new missions, group assignments, the capture of strongholds and fresh goods on the black market. You won’t be able to complete the storyline in a rush — you’ll either have to methodically blow up enemy infrastructure, or work for different groups, or cause chaos at military bases. You can, of course, try racing, but how can they compare to blowing up an entire garrison?

Just Cause 2 – madness, chases and repetitive tasks

There’s not much to do on the island. You can’t go into houses, you can’t buy a hot dog – although there are stalls, vendors waving their hands and offering something. You can’t sit in a bar, you can’t exchange a few words with the locals. And the group’s tasks are all the same. Over and over again: save, kill, steal a car, deliver it where it needs to go, protect the object, blow something up, defuse the bombs. Repeat ad infinitum.

Sometimes it reaches the point of absurdity. The capture of strongholds always follows the same pattern:

• First, we take out the snipers.
• Then we open the entrance for the assault group.
• We break through the defense.
• We spray the trucks with reinforcements with a machine gun.
• We definitely blow up the helicopter with the commandant.

“Scorpion, Scorpion!” – the comrades in arms joyfully chant. Somewhere around the fifth repetition of this scene, you want to turn around and shoot them yourself.

But what saves… no, not the variety. What saves is self-irony, grotesqueness and the charm of a third-rate action movie. The main character is a walking stereotype: a hoarse voice, a half-unbuttoned shirt, a massive silver cross. And the communication style is appropriate. “Mr. Tang, either you voluntarily submit, or I will cut off both your hands and spank you with them all the way.” You can’t deny the enemies some color either: a former Soviet intelligence agent (Ukrainian roots, a scarred face, a tank to boot), a Chinese sadist, a crazy Japanese general. And the assistant – well, of course, a femme fatale in black latex with the face of Angelina Jolie.

Story missions are a treat. There’s a shootout with an international army of psychos, and shooting helpless opponents with a machine gun in an Aztec temple, and an attack by daring ninjas. But for these moments you have to storm bases, steal cars and save some technicians again and again… And yet, Just Cause 2 is damn good visually. Only the characters’ faces sometimes resemble plastic masks, and the textures are sometimes disappointing. But the landscapes are chic. Almost like photographs: flower meadows, dense forests, prairies, black scorpions crawling on stones. And the views from the helicopter are simply breathtaking! Sea ripples, clouds, dawn fog… You can watch it endlessly. It’s just a pity that no one will let you.
