But now an ambitious newcomer has appeared on the horizon – inZOI. And it looks like it is ready to challenge the usual standards, offering a fresh look and new possibilities. We decided to take a closer look at what inZOI is and find out whether it can really push the legendary series aside.

Previously, the team focused mainly on MMORPGs, so a full-fledged life simulator is something new for them. Judging by the already available materials and pre-release footage, the developers did not limit themselves to the basic capabilities of the engine – they turned everything up to the max.

Here you can adjust the camera, change the poses of the characters, use filters, play with the focus and even call the weather at the snap of your fingers. Want a zombie apocalypse? Turn on the destroyed city and garbage flying through the streets. Do you dream of California-style shots? Here you go – palm trees, bright flowers, sun all year round. Thanks to advanced shaders, the picture looks cinematic. The editor is simply out of this world.

A beautiful shell without a soul: what’s wrong with InZOI?

InZOI, which was talked about loudly back in 2023, continues to be a spectacular, but empty picture. It’s like a trailer for a movie that was never made – the visuals are mesmerizing, especially the powerful character editor, where you can spend hours sculpting the “zoika” of your dreams. But as soon as it comes to the game itself, the magic begins to crumble.

Life in the virtual world of InZOI feels mechanical. Your characters, “zoikas”, exist in a vicious circle: eat, sleep, go to work. They have no dreams, aspirations, fears – and not even a basic simulation of emotions. This is not a life simulator, but rather a schedule simulator, where everything works according to a template and without a soul.

The gameplay is still frankly raw. And if you compare it with The Sims 4, even in its bare, starting form, then InZOI loses on all fronts. Dialogues without intonations and nuances, as if they were run through a text generator. Romantic relationships develop simply by clicks – no interesting scenes, plots or dramas. And facial animations… well, to put it mildly, they evoke strange feelings: “zoykas” can look at you with a look that will make you want to turn off the monitor.

On top of everything else – bugs. And not some little things, but bugs of the “what’s going on” level. For example, you create a couple in love in the editor, launch the game – and there are no feelings between them, a complete emotional emptiness. Or sudden deaths for no reason – just walking around the room and … lay down. It happens that the “zoyka” dies because … the game decided so. Try experimenting: starve the character and run on a treadmill – and what happens? He does not suffer, he pumps up his sports skill and glows with health.

And NPCs also behave strangely. Parents don’t pay attention to their children, they just stand there and stare at the wall. Someone walks around the city with rotten food in their hands. Neighbors disappear into nowhere – literally evaporate. And all this against the backdrop of a beautiful, but absolutely empty scenery.

InZOI is more like a beautiful demo than a full-fledged game. It has potential, it has style, but it lacks the most important thing – life. And if the developers do not breathe at least a little sense into it, it risks remaining a project about which people will say: “but it could have…”

Comparing inZOI to The Sims

Why are we so nostalgic for the old The Sims? Because they had it all — humor, madness, and a touch of irony. In the first part, you could get scared by a call from the guardianship or a chance meeting with a fortune teller. Every night you worried — would a robber show up, would a raccoon crawl out of the shadows, and who the hell is that bear in a suit? And the appearance of a sad clown or an unexpected stripper at a bachelor party became a legend. Everything was so strange that it was impossible not to fall in love.

And now we look at inZOI — and everything seems perfect, smooth, beautiful… but something is missing. Soul, maybe? Something elusive that made the old games special. But the times were different — 30 years ago, developers did not rely on graphics, but on character, atmosphere, and little surprises that evoked emotions.

The Sims 2 was famous for its attention to detail. Characters expressed vivid emotions, dialogues went through different windows, there were plenty of tiny but memorable events. Even milk packaging could have the faces of historical Sims! And if a Sim was bored, he didn’t just sit — he could tap the rhythm on his knee, and this also became part of the story.

inZOI is still a bit “raw” in this regard. Gamers have already praised how food is prepared here — realistically, without magic and flying knives. Accidents on the road? The character will crash, get out, start panicking and barely hobble home. Furniture gets dirty over time, you have to vacuum, wipe the dust … And this is without any paid DLC. Just like “The Sims 4: Dust Free”, only for free. Ha!

The Sims 3 was loved most of all for its freedom: an open world, fine-tuning textures, rich add-ons, more realistic graphics. In this regard, inZOI is closest to the “three”. Neural networks allow changing textures, there are no loading times between locations, the picture is like a postcard. It sounds cool, but we’ve already been through this – realism in simulators has a price. Regular video cards can hardly handle such games, and the graphics become outdated frighteningly quickly. Fans are still arguing about which visually ages faster – the “two” or the “three”?

Cool? Yes. But how real it is is another question.

What’s good about the “four”? Fast loading, a wide range of emotions, a bunch of character traits. But inZOI doesn’t quite measure up here. At the start, you can only choose one of 18 character traits plus a “desired life” with ambitions and tastes. This is not enough – in The Sims, you could choose a whole bunch of traits, and this really affected behavior. And here – although the characters are different on paper, in life they behave almost the same. Likes spicy food? Hates sports? So what – he still behaves like a neighbor. But there is a system of mood, fears and reputation, but so far it looks rough and does not give the feeling that you are controlling a living person.

inZOI is more like a simulation of a simulation. The heroes rarely blink, their faces are like masks, neighbors calmly pass through walls or disappear altogether. The picture is chic, but life has not yet awakened in it.

inZOI System Requirements

To run inZOI on a minimum setup, you’ll need a 64-bit version of Windows 10 and a processor like the Intel Core i5-9400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600. The game requires at least 16 GB of RAM to perform decently, and a graphics card such as the NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 580 should be enough to get started. DirectX 12 is necessary, and the game takes up around 50 GB of space on an SSD, which is recommended for smoother performance.

If you want to enjoy inZOI at its best, a more powerful configuration is advised. This includes Windows 11 (64-bit), with a CPU like the Intel Core i7-10700 or AMD Ryzen 7 3700X.
