Infinite Crisis

Infinite Crisis

Warner Bros. has discovered a lucrative opportunity this year by rolling out its second MOBA game. Their initial release, Guardians of Middle-earth, showcased the rising enthusiasm among PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 gamers for popular titles centered around lanes and towers. This initial success proved that there is a strong market for engaging multiplayer experiences.

Following that, we now have Infinite Crisis, another action-strategy game featuring legendary characters from the DC universe. However, this time the focus is not on Gandalf and his allies from Middle-earth, but rather on a diverse roster of heroes and villains from the expansive DC multiverse. The developers have boldly chosen PC as the main platform, undeterred by the intense competition in this genre. They face formidable contenders—Dota 2, SMITE, and League of Legends—but they’re fearless and determined to carve out their own niche! Set for release at the end of the year, the game promises to delight fans of Batman, The Flash, and other iconic figures in spandex, offering unique gameplay mechanics and thrilling battles. With a captivating storyline and rich graphics, Infinite Crisis aims to create an unforgettable experience for players eager to dive into the multiverse.

It’s widely recognized that Infinite Crisis takes its inspiration from League of Legends—a massively popular MOBA that has engaged players since its launch in 2009 and even earned recognition as a professional sport in the United States. Turbine incorporated not only the essential idea of two teams clashing on a single RTS map but also various intricate features that enhance gameplay. These include the ability to return to base with the “B” key, the selection of two additional skills from a shared spell pool, the introduction of the “Dominion” mode, and even the pre-game loading screen that showcases all players, along with their unique abilities and gear. In this dynamic environment, it’s crucial for players to finish off the enemy minion robots. Failing to do so means that experience points will accumulate at a significantly slower pace. Without the gold gained from these kills, players will struggle to purchase valuable items in the virtual shop, limiting their effectiveness in the game.

One of the main features of this game is rightfully considered to be its unique setting, inspired by the Infinite Crisis universe. Unlike classic projects built on a linear plot, here the developers turned to the rich mythology of the eponymous DC comic book series, which opened up virtually unlimited creative horizons for them. This approach allowed them to rethink the characters’ stories, move away from the canon and build alternative scenarios for the development of events – as if the artist was given an absolutely blank canvas on which he can experiment with the fates of Warner Bros. heroes in the most unexpected directions. The gameplay is based on the confrontation between two teams of five participants each, but unlike Dota 2, there is no strict distinction between “heroes” and “villains”. Players will have to choose a side – red or blue – while both factions can include a wide variety of representatives of the DC universe. The character selection clearly takes influence from the previous hit Injustice: Gods Among Us, giving the roster a sense of familiarity. The available heroes and antiheroes include iconic characters like Batman, The Joker, Shazam, Doomsday, the magical Zatanna, and the charismatic Poison Ivy – each with their own unique story and abilities.

At this moment, the game showcases 15 unique heroes. Compared to other MOBAs, this figure might seem a bit amusing—many of their competitors have champion rosters that easily exceed a hundred. However, since Infinite Crisis hasn’t officially launched yet, the developers are actively introducing new characters every month to keep the excitement alive. What truly matters here isn’t just the sheer number of heroes, but the breathtaking spectacle of the battles that unfold among these god-like figures. Each encounter is set against the rich backdrop of the DC multiverse, a realm that can hardly cope with the overwhelming presence of so many super beings, causing it to fracture and crumble under the immense power unleashed during intense matches. The statistics are presented in a clear and engaging manner, ensuring they don’t obstruct your view of the action; they can be easily displayed at any time you choose. By the way, our hero currently boasts six kills and one unfortunate death—though that last one was definitely a foolish mistake!

Infinite Crisis Gameplay

The game skillfully combines iconic heroes (like Green Lantern, Flash, and Catwoman) with infamous villains (such as Joker, Doomsday, and Nightmare Batman) that comic book fans have come to love. However, it also introduces original characters crafted specifically for this universe—three in total, each deserving of special attention and exploration. The narrative begins in 1989 with the groundbreaking comic Batman: Gotham by Gaslight, which vividly depicts Batman’s intense struggle against Jack the Ripper in the dark, atmospheric setting of Victorian Gotham City, circa 1889. This particular visual novel quickly garnered a cult following among fans, and one of the standout champions of the game—the “Victorian Batman,” known as Gaslight Batman—captured the hearts of the developers. Inspired by the fascinating concept of “What if?”, they decided to innovate further by creating three additional unique heroes, each with their own distinct backstories and abilities, enriching the game’s universe and providing players with a diverse range of characters to engage with.

Thanks to a classic comic from 1989 and the creative minds at studio Turbine, we encounter Gaslight Catwoman, an elegant aristocrat equipped with steam-powered mechanical claws, crafted in the style of the 19th century. Alongside her is Gaslight Joker, a clown struggling with severe obesity, who embodies chaos and humor. This hefty jester hurls spoiled hams at his foes and cleverly defends himself with a swirling frenzy of plague-infested rats, creating an unsettling spectacle. The third “exceptional” character introduced is Atomic Wonder Woman, a fierce warrior who survived the devastating aftermath of the Third World War. Instead of wielding the traditional Lasso of Truth, she fights with a formidable staff, its tip ominously adorned with a bloodied chainsaw, reflecting the harsh realities of her world.

As if they were made from a template

The developers boldly embrace the challenge of creating diverse characters from the same archetype—while iconic figures like Superman, Bane, and Lex Luthor are notably absent, players can interact with two distinct Jokers, each showcasing unique abilities and quirks. Additionally, there are two different versions of Wonder Woman, along with an impressive trio of Batmans: the classic, the Victorian, and the Nightmare Batman. This last incarnation has undergone a dramatic transformation into a vampire, rising to prominence as the top bloodsucker after vanquishing Dracula in the comic “Batman & Dracula: Red Rain.” Having made his way into the game, he now thirsts for the blood of other beings that possess divine genetics. In this engaging universe, players can select from 15 champions, while the closed beta version offers two exciting game modes, each featuring its own distinct map. The first battleground, Gotham Heights, presents a futuristic reimagining of the “Dominion” mode from League of Legends, filled with vibrant visuals and intense action. This setting enhances the immersive experience, allowing players to engage in thrilling battles within a visually dynamic landscape.

Infinite Crisis battle

To sum it up, the map features five contested points that teams fiercely battle for. The team that controls fewer key areas during the match gradually loses its influence and ultimately faces defeat. Therefore, those who struggle to capture and defend points find themselves at a serious disadvantage. In this mode, it’s essential to cling to every inch of territory rather than recklessly chase after enemy kills. Strategic positioning and teamwork are vital to holding key points and outmaneuvering opponents. The second map is significantly more captivating and unique. It feels like something we haven’t witnessed in MOBA games before. Set against the vibrant backdrop of the vast Coast City Marina, the landscape is filled with urban jungles, three orbital blaster charging stations, and two paths lined with a series of formidable defensive towers. Teams must work together to break through the tower defenses along either path and, once they reach the enemy core at their base, they must destroy it to claim victory. Every decision counts in this thrilling environment!

The map becomes captivating with its many hidden paths that allow heroes to vanish—similar to the “bushes” found in “League of Legends.” Players can also get their hands on a powerful Doomsday device, which adds an exciting layer of strategy. Teams have the opportunity to capture recharge points for this device periodically, and the victors of these intense battles gain the ability to launch a precise strike from orbit, incinerating any part of the city they choose. With some luck, this strike can result in the complete elimination of the entire opposing team, turning the tide of the match dramatically. Players frequently exploit the “Batmans” to gain an advantage. In the match currently loading, five different Batman heroes will be in action, each with their unique skills and abilities.

Infinite Crisis heroes and interface

Currently, there isn’t a classic three-lane map in Infinite Crisis, but developers have exciting plans to introduce one after the game transitions out of closed beta. This addition is highly anticipated by fans who are eager for more traditional gameplay. Additionally, the categorization of heroes into three types of “fighters” deserves special attention, as it diverges from the typical formats seen in other MOBAs. Instead of sticking to the familiar archetypes of bruisers, casters, and agile characters, they’ve opted for a more innovative and refreshing classification that enhances gameplay diversity. The first category features heroes who grow stronger and deal primary damage through basic attacks (using the right mouse button, just so you remember). These characters are often referred to as “auto-attackers” by professionals. Their straightforward mechanics make them easy to master, which is why they are frequently chosen by players. Mastering timing and item purchases that boost attack speed is crucial for maximizing their potential on the battlefield.

The second category, however, is definitely more intricate, showcasing characters with impactful and unique special abilities. “Superpower” is a distinct stat that players must cultivate as the match progresses, adding an extra layer of strategy. This emphasis on skillful management of abilities encourages players to think critically about their choices and adapt their strategies in real-time.

Characters like the Joker, Zatanna, Flash, and Green Lantern are capable of casting truly devastating spells, and their formidable power increases significantly when enhanced by the right gear selected from the local shop. Engaging in battle against conventional “mages” can be more complicated, yet they often possess lower health, making them vulnerable despite their magical prowess. Lastly, we have a fascinating third category of “hybrids”—heroes who are equally adept as fierce enforcers and skilled spellcasters. Currently, this group features only the Victorian Batman, a character who allows developers to explore a wide array of creative experiments. Note: Because he’s simply amazing!

Infinite Crisis MOBA

There’s also a fascinating ability that grants the hero the power to uproot lampposts from the ground and throw them at enemies with impressive force. If that’s not enough to satisfy your destructive cravings, you can even seize a parked car and hurl it into a crowd of unsuspecting foes. The ensuing explosion and fiery chaos are guaranteed to leave a lasting impact! Such bold and outrageous feats are within everyone’s reach, even icons like Batman and Catwoman. The decision to develop Infinite Crisis was motivated by three significant factors: the remarkable success of last year’s fighting game Injustice, which reignited interest in DC’s diverse heroes; the notable absence of a competitive MOBA game from Marvel; and the impressive profits generated by last year’s Guardians of Middle-earth. The foundational elements taken from League of Legends have a surprisingly positive effect on players: they are growing weary of the current action-strategy offerings and are eagerly anticipating a fresh and innovative generation of MOBAs. The race to be the first to release such a game is fiercely competitive, involving not just Warner Bros., but also major players like Electronic Arts, Blizzard, and Deep Silver, all vying for a chance to capture the attention of gamers everywhere.

We have always longed for a “futuristic MOBA game” — every existing title tends to stick to those familiar fantasy themes. Infinite Crisis is genuinely enjoyable right now, as there’s nowhere else where you can casually pocket a regular meteorite or leap into a poorly parked tank with such ease. This unique setting draws many players, and on European servers, you can find teammates at any hour — nine other enthusiastic volunteers are just minutes away, ready for action.

Staying engaged with the game is crucial, especially since this is the only prominent MOBA project whose developers are committed to avoiding delays that would push the release to 2014. The excitement is palpable, and the anticipation builds with every update.

Are we ready to wait for this?

Imagine the thrill of tossing cars around, drinking the blood of enemies while embodying a feral Batman, and smashing foes with lampposts, all reminiscent of the beloved classic Freedom Force. It’s a refreshing escape from the overdone fantasy genre that seems to dominate the market! For such an exhilarating experience, I’d even contemplate pawning my mom’s jewelry, but there’s no need to save up — after its official launch, Infinite Crisis will be completely free to play, allowing everyone to dive into this innovative world without financial barriers.
