After leaving the apartment and getting into the car, Jackett goes “to work.” Before entering the building, where he will have to arrange a massacre of people whose guilt remains in question, he chooses a mask. He has a lot of masks: technically, they help hide his identity, but by game convention they also give various bonuses. They do not open immediately — at the beginning, only the rooster mask is available. Wearing this comb, we go inside empty-handed… and it begins.

On the way home, the hero will definitely stop by either a pizzeria or a video rental. The same salesman will always meet him there — he will give the goods away for free and throw a couple of phrases about the chaos that we have just caused. After that, go home and sleep as if nothing had happened. And so on until the next call. Each level here is not just an arena for violent showdowns, but rather a task requiring dexterity and precision. The opponents are not very intelligent, but they should not be underestimated either: they move with lightning speed, shoot without a miss and almost always outnumber, while our hero is killed by a single blow or shot. It’s all fair.

The view from above allows, or rather obliges, to assess the situation before breaking in: count the enemies, see what each of them is armed with, assess your own weapon, and then decide how to enter, in what order to destroy the opponents, what weapon to grab, when the ammo in your own runs out, and from which rooms reinforcements can come to the enemy. Having made all these calculations, we break into the room – and immediately catch a bunch of shotgun pellets in the stomach or a pipe to the head from an overly frisky guy, whom we ourselves missed.

But no matter, one more time and on the fifth or seventh try we play everything out as it should: we powerfully break through the door, take out two of the most dangerous with shots from a double-barreled shotgun, throw an empty gun in the face of a third, knock out a fourth with a fist, pick up a bat from the floor – and in seven seconds the entire room is painted red. There are a dozen corpses around, a satisfied smile on the face, music playing in the background.

The bad news is that there is nothing else in the game. The good news is that there is nothing else needed. The process of clearing the levels turned out to be so addictive that, even without understanding what is happening in the plot and constantly dying, the player still continues to move forward. In Hotline Miami, two and a half playthroughs in a row is a completely normal situation. Any replay of the game works with old statistics: it compares your previous records with new ones and allows you to start the game from any level.

But an open door, on the contrary, can lure enemies to the place you need, where Jacket, of course, will be waiting for fools in a well-organized ambush. In addition to a closed and open door, there is also a suddenly opened door. This trick allows you to knock down your opponent, and with a special mask, kill him right away. There are also internal windows in the rooms – a tricky thing. It is sometimes not so easy to notice them when the camera is from above, and often you only find out about the existence of windows when a bullet flies through them. But this also works well in the opposite direction. The walls also look different: among them there are thin partitions that can be pierced by bullets. I think you can guess how to use this.

Death here is not an event at all and is not perceived as a punishment, but simply as an unsuccessful attempt, nothing more.

At the same time, I never managed to get stuck somewhere dead – even if you lack skill, sooner or later banal luck will work. The design of the protected spaces itself pleasantly pleases with detail: the local decoration not only creates the right atmosphere, but also plays a plot role. Looking closely at the places we visit, we get additional pieces of the same complete picture of the plot, which the player is offered to collect on his own. Carefully examining the levels is also motivated by the letters hidden here: if you collect this entire “collector” of letters, you will get a phrase that unlocks the true and secret ending of the game.

The real task of the player in Hotline Miami is not just to complete the level (it is quite easy), but to complete it stylishly and coolly. And here are even more subtleties and details. Not only the catchy music and sharp opponents stimulate the player to be as deadly as possible – this is also what the rating system works for. Each of our actions on the level, the total time of completion and even the style of play are assessed, and at the end a total score is given – from an A plus to a D minus.
