The Munich Agreement gave the Third Reich carte blanche, the Finnish campaign became a test for the Red Army, the “phony war” showed the weakness of old strategies, and Kyiv in 1941 felt the full force of German aviation.

Strategy at the Limit: Mistakes That Cost Too Much

The developers are clearly hinting: if you want victories, prepare for work. The desire to change the world is not enough – first you have to come down to earth and set up production. Factories are the heart of defense, without them there will be no railways, no bunkers, no military factories. But it is the factories that supply the army with equipment, which also does not stand still: yesterday the T-35 was in service, today it is the KV-1, and trucks are gradually giving way to armored personnel carriers. But progress comes up against resources: where to get steel, tungsten, rubber and oil? You can’t do without proper planning, and the gameplay can be expressed more quickly in a strict formula than in beautiful epithets.

But you can’t win a battle with tanks alone. Troops need supplies, and soldiers need training. Reconnaissance helps in defense, artillery clears the way forward, and for reliability it would not hurt to add a few regiments to the division. Otherwise, six enemy divisions will easily repel the onslaught of sixty of yours. But such rearrangements require experience, which is gained in battle or during exercises. In peacetime, it must be accumulated with the patience of a chess player.

When the guns are silent, diplomats take up the matter. Two resources decide here – political power points and national focuses. The former provide bonuses and allow you to hire advisers, enter into alliances and influence neighbors. The latter pave the way for history: the Great Purge in the USSR, the Anschluss of Austria, territorial claims. But not everything is so predictable: elections can turn the country in an unexpected direction. France balances between defense and aggression, Italy decides whether to be friends with Yugoslavia or conflict. Many little things add up to a huge mechanism of war, and Paradox, like no one else, knows how to show that the devil is in these details.

And the details here are not only in the mechanics, but also in its external expression. For example, it is easy to calculate how many rifles an army needs. But it is not so hard to understand why Japanese soldiers are dying of hunger in Manchuria despite having a full infrastructure. It is almost impossible to prepare for all the challenges of the war: in some places fortifications were not built, in others there is not enough air defense, and in the rear infantry training has stopped. Why? Because medium tanks appeared in the divisions, which are produced at a rate of one wheel per week – the factories were bombed. So who was supposed to cover them from the air? The answer to this question should have been sought at the planning stage. Mistakes here hit you in the nose retroactively, sometimes several hours after the start of the game. Over time, you learn to calculate everything: tricks, technologies, production, direction of attacks and diplomacy. This is not a game that you can rush into.

Here are the mistakes an inexperienced player can make:

• Insufficient production of basic equipment, leaving infantry without weapons.
• Ignoring logistics, leading to a shortage of supplies at the front.
• Diplomatic errors: choosing the wrong allies or delaying decisive steps.
• Overstretched divisions, which require more resources than the country can afford.
• Construction errors: too many factories and not enough fortifications, or vice versa.

And if you add to this a not very user-friendly interface that requires unnecessary movements and causes stupor, then the entry threshold becomes even higher. Even in Stellaris, the most accessible strategy of Paradox, it is far from ideal. Here, in places, it can drive you crazy. Although, of course, compared to the previous parts, a lot has been simplified: now you can think in fronts, and not in separate parts of the army. But the interface still remains the weak link of this grand military machine.

Like any great game, Hearts of Iron IV requires sacrifice. And the first on this list is your time. First, to learn the basics, then to experiment with alternative history. You can try to rewrite the world either in the spirit of real events – for example, dividing the planet between Germany and the USSR – or in the style of Philip K. Dick: let Japan assert its dominance, like in The Man in the High Castle. Or, perhaps, go for something crazy – organize a French blitzkrieg against the Germans in 1938? Whatever the scenario, there are no easy ways here. Hearts of Iron IV is the Dark Souls of global strategies: only instead of demons and knights – Manstein and Guderian, and instead of a sword and shield – factories and an army. But the feeling of victory does not become any less sweet. When was the last time your palms sweated just from numbers and maps?

“Hearts” is the very game with which the night flies by. And for what? To announce to the world with shining eyes the next morning: “I did the impossible – France survived in 1940!” This strategy is not for everyone.
