Hades
Recently, we’ve seen an incredible surge of great games coming out of independent developers that showed real creativity and polish. Some games, like Spelunky 2 and Spiritfarer, were ready for players from the start — polished to perfection and requiring no additional content updates. Others, like Risk of Rain 2 and Hades, spent over a year in Early Access, but even in their early versions, they hinted at their huge potential and caught the attention of gamers. This is especially true for Hades — the talented team at Supergiant Games has a reputation for not settling for anything less than perfection. Supergiant Games is a development studio. In this article, we will tell you about the game.

The game starts right off the bat: we find ourselves in a dungeon with a sword and start chopping up enemies in an attempt to escape from hell. And with a high probability, this attempt will end with our death in about fifteen rooms, on the very first boss. At least, that’s how it was for me. Then the main character ends up in a local hub, and they more or less begin to explain to us what’s going on here. The local main character, Zagreus, son of Hades, wants to get to the surface. He is helped with this by various gods who throw buffs, and by the local inhabitants of hell, who will also test us, and sometimes even help us.
One might assume that the plot here, as in other roguelikes, is only needed for the background – it appears at the beginning of the game and somewhere at the end. But no. Hades goes further: the plot develops constantly and keeps pace with the gameplay. After each of our deaths in the hero’s house, the characters share their thoughts about our run and the general atmosphere in hell. The gods themselves, who give buffs, also like to throw a couple of lines at each meeting. Moreover, for a couple of dozen hours, the lines have not been repeated even once.
The plot constantly influences the gameplay. Have you defeated the starting boss many times and are already tired of him? He will be replaced with another when the script requires it. Have you tried all the buff combinations? Most likely, new gods will fly in response. New elements constantly appear in the game along with our progress. And even when we finally pass the final boss, the game will give us a plot justification for continuing endless runs again and again.
The visuals also did not disappoint. Just watching the gameplay of Hades is already pleasant and interesting. On the one hand, there are a lot of different effects, explosions and all that on the screen, but at the same time everything is quite clear, and you do not get lost in this chaos.

Hades Gameplay: Dungeons, Bosses and Unpredictable Challenges
The basis of the gameplay here is quite standard – a roguelike, a dungeon crawler. We go into a room, mow down various enemies, trying to take as little damage as possible, and then go to the next one. And so on until the location boss.
As usual, there are several types of rooms here: regular ones with enemies, shops, places with healing, and rare encounters with characters who can help with something. There are four locations in the game:
- Tartarus is the first and most peaceful.
- Asphodel – everything is in lava, which is just trying to burn you.
- Elysium is a blissful place, filled with far from the most pleasant opponents.
- Temple of Styx – they will poison you, try to kill you with various traps, and simply send you to the next world with dignity. This is the last test before the final boss and, finally, the exit from Hell.
At first glance, it may seem that there is not enough content in the game. There are not many mobs for hundreds of hours of gameplay, only four bosses, and not a huge number of room types and various fights. But then, try after try, the game began to throw up various surprises. Already in the first runs, the boss of Tartarus changed – and more than once. Gradually, new enemies began to appear along with the progression of the plot.
Gods and Build Construction
The most important thing is the gods. They are our main suppliers of buffs in the game. Build-building is probably the most delicious thing in any roguelike. After all, it is what creates that very variety, when each run is completely different from the previous one. There are a mountain of different improvements that can be obtained from the gods. There are improvements for two attacks of the main character, a dash ult and a bunch of passives. There is plenty of room to roam here. Moreover, there are both quite standard upgrades (for example, increasing damage by a few percent), and more interesting things. For example, Zeus has an upgrade for a dash that makes lightning strike nearby enemies. And this lightning can be improved even more.
There are extreme passives. For example, a skill that takes 60% of the hero’s HP, but in return for each normal hit on the enemy gives +2 HP. Thus, having got rid of a hundred hearts, you turn into a crazy berserker who cuts everyone down as quickly as possible, while restoring his already very limited health supply.
Weapons and Combat System: Variety of tactics and active battles
In Hades, players can choose from six distinct types of weapons, ranging from a classic sword to an ancient Greek “gun” that adds a unique twist to combat. Each weapon offers a diverse playstyle: the shield not only blocks incoming attacks but also enables you to charge forward, knocking enemies aside in a powerful rush; the spear can be thrown and then summoned back, allowing for clever backstab opportunities and strategic positioning. The numerous boons from the gods play a crucial role in shaping your combat strategy, significantly influencing how you engage enemies within moments of starting a new run. You might decide to confront foes directly, setting traps on the ground after a swift dash, or you could opt for a more cautious approach, dealing damage from a distance. As you delve deeper into the game and uncover various upgrades—like double and legendary boons, along with other delightful surprises—you can’t help but marvel at the incredible attention to detail and creativity that enriches the gameplay experience. In addition, all guns have subclasses that add even more variety.
The combat system really pleased players from all over the world. Two types of attacks for each weapon, a throw, a throwing ult, a dash – a bunch of possibilities in combat. All this, coupled with the visuals and a very pleasant sound design, makes the combat in Hades incredibly cool. Whatever weapon you take, you will feel every blow you deliver to the enemy. At the same time, you are always in some incredible flow: attacks, dodges, spinal tactics straight from arcade shooters. You can also add character pumping outside of dungeons, improving our home, as well as dungeons. And the result will be an ideal game that will steal a hundred or two hours from you.
Hades verdict
Like all games, there are some flaws — well, for balance. Bugs? No. Graphical flaws? No. Gameplay flaws? Almost none. The only thing is that you can assemble a completely non-working build during the game, but this is a problem with all roguelikes. Sometimes the randomness outplays itself, but this is not so much a minus as a feature of the genre — it will affect only one of hundreds of runs.
Hades has become a very pleasant discovery for players this year. Something akin to the feeling when you first play The Binding of Isaac and understand how much deeper the game is than it seems at first glance. Before the rise of streaming services, musicians frequently released cherished compilations known as “Greatest Hits.” Hades beautifully evokes the spirit of these classic albums; it is not simply a showcase of the best offerings from Supergiant Games but rather a masterful fusion of various external concepts reimagined in a more creative and captivating way. The game is enriched with their own unique innovations that elevate the experience. As a standout title, it represents the pinnacle of the “roguelike” genre, embodying its essence while also serving as a profound source of inspiration for future developers and creators.
