GTR Evolution

For many years now, SimBin have been sticking to their usual pattern: a new game in the fall, an expansion in the summer. It’s March 2025 now, and the studio doesn’t seem to be going to change course. Everything would be fine, if not for one thing: with each new part, mostly only the licenses and the list of cars change, while the engine remains the same – morally outdated and pretty boring.

This approach was once typical of many Scandinavian developers – not only in the gaming industry. Look, even Volvo didn’t risk changing its design for many years, and only recently finally moved away from the image of a reliable but boring “Swedish iron”.

But it’s 2025, and everything around is changing. DICE continues to churn out visual hits, Paradox – even they, with all their niche nature, do not stand still and are actively developing. And against the backdrop of all this, SimBin seem to be stuck in time. Fans of the genre have seriously begun to lose faith that a modern car simulator with graphics at least on the level of this decade will ever appear on the PC.

GTR Evolution really lives up to its name — it’s more of an evolution than a full-fledged sequel. And it’s not just about technical nuances. In essence, it’s an expansion to last year’s RACE 07: The Official WTCC Game. Owners of the original won’t even have to buy the full version — there’s a lightweight and more accessible edition for them, which runs with RACE 07 installed. However, from our point of view, there’s almost no difference between the versions: the expansion doesn’t make any major changes to the original game. But with the installation, new car classes and three fresh variations of one track appear — and that’s what changes things.

The developers from SimBin, although they don’t bother much with the visuals of their projects, understand perfectly well what’s really important for fans of racing simulators — and they know how to press the right buttons at the right time. Their best game to date, GTR 2: FIA GT Racing Game, was released two years ago, and there is no sequel in sight: the key people have left for Blimey! Games. So why not breathe new life into RACE 07 by adding powerful GT cars from GTR 2? As a result, the game’s car fleet has been noticeably updated – now it has more than two dozen really fast cars, which seem like real beasts against the background of leisurely touring cars. Moreover, this is not just a copy-paste: many cars were created from scratch, and those that migrated from GTR 2 received new sound and reworked physics of behavior on the track.

Yes, almost all the newcomers participate in the FIA GT championship – like the Aston Martin DBR9 or Chevrolet Corvette C6 – but there is no license for the championship itself. Why this is so is a mystery: either legal subtleties, or a conscious choice by SimBin. There are both pros and cons. The main sadness is the absence of Ferrari, Maserati and Porsche: the Swedes could not use them without special permission from the manufacturers. However, instead of them, the game now has some real exotics for connoisseurs. Do you know what a Gumpert Apollo, SunRed SR2, Marcos MarcoRelly GTS or Koenigsegg CCG are? By the way, these are real rare racing cars, some of which participate in national series, while others exist in a single copy.

The best deal is no deal at all! Just a steam free account.

Now RACE 07 has an incredible variety. There are two types of Formulas, two WTCC seasons (only 2008 was somehow bypassed), roadsters, prototypes, and four GT classes at once. And the cherry on the cake is four road sports cars, including the stylish and fast Audi R8.

Racing on the Edge: How GTR Evolution Recreates an Iconic Track

GTR Evolution is not just reminiscent of Gran Turismo — the spirit of the iconic console series is felt here even in such details as the selection of cars. There is only one new track, but what a track! The game was the first in a long time to bring the legendary Nordschleife to the PC — the very same Northern loop of the Nurburgring, more than 20 kilometers long. This is not just a racetrack, but a real symbol of motorsport, one of the most dangerous, technical and exciting tracks in the world. Until the end of the 70s, Formula 1 stages were held here, although even then the track did not meet safety standards — centuries-old trees grew literally a couple of meters from the track, and fences were far from everywhere. And it was not very convenient for spectators: narrow, long, unpredictable. In 1984, a new modern track with the same name was built nearby — the Nurburgring. But the old loop, nicknamed the “Green Hell” by Jackie Stewart himself, remained a living legend. Now it is used as a testing ground by car manufacturers from all over the world, and several times a year it hosts real marathons – endurance races, where both small Mini Coopers and crazy 600-horsepower Porsche and BMW meet.

How GTR Evolution Recreates an Iconic Track

In GTR Evolution, you can not only drive along the Nordschleife – this alone is enough to experience a storm of emotions. But the developers went further: thanks to the Car Filter option (inherited from RACE 07), you can arrange your own dream race. Want to find out which is faster – the classic BMW M3 from the 80s or the modern Dodge Viper? Please! And the result may surprise you: on this narrow and treacherous track, horsepower is not the main thing – the driver’s skill decides here.

In one lap, you will have to cope with more than a hundred turns, and each of them is unique. Here is just a part of what you will encounter:

  • Flat, wide turns where it is easy to underestimate the speed
  • Blind turns that require absolute trust in the track
  • Turns with profiling, including the famous concrete “Carousel”
  • Sections with jumps and sharp changes in altitude
  • The only long straight where you feel like you are about to take off

Maintaining concentration throughout each lap is no easy task. But this track will definitely not leave anyone indifferent. It is not for nothing that Niki Lauda, who survived a serious accident here, once said: “If you like the Nürburgring, then you are either crazy or you were driving too slowly.”
